I like to read the time on my (analogue) watch in the dark. The Timex Indiglo system is the best I’ve found for this. It lights the face up clearly and evenly and makes the watches easy to read. The one trouble I’ve had with them is that I’ve found the illumination part short lived – say lasting 3 years on average.

I’ve just changed the battery on my (I guess) 6 month old watch as it had stopped. I’m not sure if the battery going flat so soon is a sign of other problems looming or not but I’m wondering whether there are other makers using electroluminescence that I could try when this watch does die.

Or are there alternative systems that work?

I know there are the luminous paint type ones but are there any (for new watches) that are any good? My mother has a cheap Casio bedside clock. The paint on that is quite good if you charge it up under a light and look at it in the dark soon afterwards but it fades quickly and would be useless after a couple of hours in the dark.

I use a Timex Marathon Indiglo as a work watch because I also like that feature but it's lasted about ten years now without fading, maybe because it spends most of it's time in a drawer. I have a Seiko as an everyday watch with an illuminated dial which is unreadable in low light and always has been. IOW, no help here but I'm interested in this subject.

My Timex indiglo has been going at least 10 years. Including losing its beep while I was swimming in the Caribbean and regaining it about 6 years later! I still occasionally use the light to find my way in the dark. Especially when camping. Maybe I am just lucky with this one.

I switched from the Timex Indiglo to a Withings fitness tracker and it has a small screen with time, date, etc. I have a couple of Timex watches with 10-year batteries just keeping time in a dresser drawer. Oh, well.

The Indiglo feature on my bedside alarm clock is a nice bonus,
but that isn't why I bought it --

I chose that brand because the clock does not go tick-tock,
a sound that keeps me awake at night.
The second hand, instead, has some sort of sweep mechanism
and the sound is more like a gentle hum
than that god-awful tapping sixty times a minute.
I'll have to look to see what brand it is
-- Bulova, perhaps.

I used to like the Indiglo feature on Timex watches, but then I had to start putting on my glasses to read the darn watch at night, so I gave up. Now I just say, "Alexa, what time is it?" ;-)

Joe, Does Alexa tell you whether its the NSA, the CIA, Homeland Security, the Trump Re-Election Organization or just Bezos that's watching you & logging your every move?

I’d need my glasses to read a number of watches day or night, Joe. The Timex Easy Readers (at least ones with black hands and numbers on a white background and with a reasonable sized dial) suit me well and I find the contrast OK even with the green Indiglo glow.

1. Tritium Dial - many manufacturers.

2. Any old watch/clock and a small flashlight by your bed.

Rocket science?

I'm currently wearing a Citizen which has nice, bright, luminous features at night -- I've had it for better than 10 years now. When it comes back I'll wear the Seiko I bought just before the Y2K "disaster" struck (it's getting new hands). I also have a Seiko "automatic" (self-winding, it used to be called) that has a non-metallic band that I wear when I travel "above 60" for aurora hunting; it needs a new band and I'll be wearing it again, the luminous hands are quite good (purchased about 6 or 7 years ago).

The hands of the wind-up Bulova my brother gave me for Christmas, 1968 (he was in VN) still shine just fine.
