Can anyone answer this crossword puzzler

Noisy bovine provides safe passage (3 and 4)

Reminds me of the joke about the Isle of Wight Ferry.

Moo and Cow have three letters.

Or is it a cryptic crossword? Noisy being - anagram with additions?

No, nothing coming to mind.

No idea.

I started by thinking noisy bovine could be f-ox but that's getting me nowhere except keeping me on what I think is a wrong direction.

Cow horn??

Cow = bovine

Noisy = horn, also part of cow

Horn (Cape thereof) = passage

But safe?...Can't equate that...

I think it might be FOX HOLE
'F' is for forte (loud)
'OX' is a bovine.
Fox hole is a military term for a safe place for soldiers to pass through the trenches.

Sorry, that doesn't work.

The grid of the crossword has shaded spaces and the letters from those squares are Blank, M U L B L A. They should give you the answer.

I think the remaining letter is a G but I'm not 100% on that

Well, 'mad bull' might fit the noisy bovine but I see no connection with safe passage.

A fox hole doesn't really fit with passage either - soldiers usually shelter in them, or fire from them. Certainly safe. I just read The Things they Carried, by Tim O'Brian. The soldiers in Vietnam spent a lot of time in fox holes.

"MAD BULL" would give you a D instead of a G. Does that help to give a better guess at the other word?

I thought of FOG HORN.
Cattle and oxen have horns, and a fog horn is noisy and helps keep sailors safe.

I can't get the link maker to work but if you copy and paste

https://safe.org.nz/media-releases/animals-will-be-at-risk-of-injury-or-death-at-mad-bull-rodeo-this-weekend-safe-nz/

You should see that SAFE is a New Zealand animal rights group which has been complaining about the Mad Bull rodeo recently.

fox fits. Now find a safe passage. something like a fox run?

Nothing here

fog horn might fit if there is a bovine called "og" (there is a Fogera in Ethiopia)

No, come up blank again. Has anyone tried crossword answers websites? There are enough of them.

In a local rag Steve. It is a normal crossword and some of the answers have a shaded square. When you take the letters from the shaded square you then have to make a word, or words.

The letters this time were M U L B A L D and you had to make two words of 3 and then 4 letters. The clue to these words was Noisy Bovine provided safe passage.

Fox Runs is 3 & 4 and fox fits, and fox runs are safe passages.

That's it, I'm done.

I'm with Mr Red on this one.
I do have to wonder whether there's a typo in the clue:
Noisy Bovine provided safe passage.
Noisy bovine = F ox. To get 'runs' you would need 'provides' (as in organises/runs).

Yes Nigel but you don't spell Fox Runs with the letters I have which I say once again are M U L B A L D

The only 3/4 combinations I can make with those letters are MAD BULL, MUD BALL, BAD MULL, BUD MALL, DAM BULL
They become increasingly meaningless. I too think there may be a misprint somewhere - maybe one or more of the seven available letters.

I may have come up with a rationale for the answer. In the harbour in town the pier ends are known as Bull ends, it MAY be a reference to them.

The "to egg on" one was in a Crackerjack sketch in what must have been the 60s. From memory: Peter Glaze, doing crossword: "any idea about this one..."To egg on....five letters...". Leslie Crowther: "Toast! Two egg on toast!"

Noisome has nothing to do with noisy. It means annoying, disagreeable, stinking, that sort of thing.

But a lot closer to Mad Bull - spelling mistake, misnomer, it has been mooted. The clues are there. Just one avenue until there is a definitive answer.

Geeeeze how obvious does one have to make it? Binary Brain.

From the latest post to the thread (above the line), "What is a bulgine?"

"the bull engine was an auxiliary steam engine used to raise large sails"

Nothing about madness or being noisy, but it might help in providing safe passage.

Most crossword and puzzle setters usually give a 'correct' answer eventually. Will we get to see one for this?
