I LOVE MY SAILOR BOY - From Franz Rickaby, Ballads and Songs of the Shanty-Boy (1926), p. 203.
Apparently from M. C. Dean's The Flying Cloud.

Abroad as I rambled one morning in May,
So carelessly I rambled down Liverpool's streets so gay.
I overheard a fair maid, and this was all her cry,
"And let my friends say what they will, I love my sailor boy."

A version of THE COALMINER AND THE PITMAN'S WIFE has these lines in the last verse

Well, the pit gates are locked, little more I've to say,
I was turned out of my house on the thirteenth of May.

source: Dallas:One Hundred Songs of Toil 1974

The lyrics are among the versions posted at Mudcat thread
https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=68589#3285561

These lines aren't in the versions I've heard so I don't know what recording to recommend. The discussion thread does include some links to recordings; the discussion is partly about the different tunes that versions of The Coalminer and the Pitman's Wife are set to.

On 14 May 2021, Henryp cited Gathering Rushes in the Month of May, aka Underneath Her Apron. Link to " Gathering Rushes in the Month of May" posted above It's a song of merry May seduction. I'm adding some Mudcat links which could be added to that message.

One of the linked recordings in that post is A Wee Bird Cam' Tae My Apron · Jean Redpath · Abby Newton    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uNGheGyvDo Casey sang this song on the 9 May 2022 Mudcat singaround

The lyrics of that Scottish variant are posted on Mudcat
A WEE BIRD CAM' TAE MY APRON

It fell on a morning, a morning in May
My faither's cows they a' went astray
I loukit me down and the heather was gay
And a burr stack tae my apron

also at Mudcat
UNDERNEATH HER APRON

A pretty young girl all in the month of May,
She's gathering rushes just at the break of day,
But before she come home she had bore a little son,
And she rolled him underneath her aperon.

and

THE REAPING OF THE RUSHES GREEN

- As I walked out one morning, it being in the merry month of May,
Me and my two wild beagles, hoping to find some game to kill.
When I spied no one but Mary; she appeared to me like a virgin queen
She being at her daily labour at the reaping of her rushes green. -

is among lyrics posted at Mudcat discussion
ADD: bonny little bunch of rushes/Gathering Rushes along with some related songs which don't mention the month of May

BETWEEN SEA AND LAND – A TRIP TO THE WHITSUNTIDE FAIR by Henry Peacock 2022

Tune; Rambleaway as sung by Roger Wilson. Performed by the Albion Band on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_0LBEbiVhU

Twice every day the tide fills Morecambe Bay
Sweeping aside anything in its way
Ellen and Thomas worked on Flookburgh sands
Reaping the harvest between sea and land

Ellen, my darling girl, Thomas then said
It won’t be long now before we are wed
And people in hundreds come from far and wide
To watch as we walk down the aisle side by side

Chorus; Sailors take to the sea, others never leave land
But in Flookburgh the folk spend their lives on the sand

In Ulverston there’ll be the Whitsuntide Fair
We’ll take all our friends and we’ll have some fun there
And so they set off at the break of the day
Over the sands that surround Morecambe Bay

Thomas bought Ellen a new dress to wear
A ring for her finger and a bow for her hair
The sun was going down at the end of the day
As they departed on their homeward way

Chorus

The sands hold great dangers for wandering souls
Where the rush of the tide scours out steep-sided holes
Their cart in the dark, I am sorry to say
Was heading towards a deep pool in their way

Early next morning nine bodies were found
The coroner confirmed his verdict of drowned
Who thought that a day that began so carefree
Would end on the sands in such dark tragedy?

Chorus

At noon on the Sunday the muffled church bells
Sadly rang over the grey Furness Fells
And mourners in hundreds came from far and wide
As Ellen and Thomas were laid side by side

Nine lives were needlessly lost on the sands
Caught in the space inbetween sea and land
Today as you cross the sands safely by train
Remember those poor souls whose trip was in vain

Chorus

The events in this song occurred in 1846. Until 1974, Furness was part of Lancashire - the two were linked by the dangerous road across the sands. The Earl of Burlington - who became the Duke of Devonshire - promoted a railway from Ulverston to Carnforth, and by 1857 trains would carry passengers safely over both the Kent and the Leven rivers.

Joan, to the Maypole away let us on,
The time is swift and will be gone;
There go the lasses away to the green,
Where their beauties may be seen;
Bess, Moll, Kate, Doll,
All the brave lasses have lads to attend 'em,
Hodge, Nick, Tom, Dick,
Jolly brave dancers, and who can amend 'em?

Joan, to the Maypole away let us on,
The time is swift and will be gone;
There go the lasses away to the green,
Where their beauties may be seen;

Now, if we hold out as we do begin,
Joan and I the prize shall win;
Nay, if we live till another day, I'll make thee Lady of the May.
Dance round, skip, bound,
Turn and bob, and then for a greeting;
Now, Joan, We've done,
Fare thee well till the next merry meeting.

Joan, to the Maypole away let us on,
The time is swift and will be gone;
There go the lasses away to the green,
Where their beauties may be seen;

More information about "La rosée du joli mois de mai" / "La rousée du joly mois de may", Geoff's post, 2 posts above.    Link to LA ROSÉE DU JOLI MOIS DE MAI posted above     &    Link to JOLI MOIS DE MAI posted above

LA ROSÉE DU JOLI MOIS DE MAI

This piece was first written and composed by Jean Planson (c.1559 -c.1611). You'll find the original sheet music with score and lyrics at the BNF. The lines in italics in the text below don't show on it.
The tune you can hear sung by The Toronto Consort, Angelo Branduardi among others is by Emmanuel Adrianssen (c. 1554-1604), a Flemish lutenist. It was published in "Pratum musicum…", you'll find a pdf copy of it there. The piece is #54 on page 134 of the pdf.
The lyrics can also be found at the BNF in this 1600 book ("La fleur des chansons amoureuses où sont comprins tous les airs de court recueillis aux cabinets des plus rares poëtes de ce temps, A Rouen, chez Adrian de Launay, devant le Palais, au Compas d'Or -M.DC. Avec privilège du ROY" -yes, with this spelling!)

Below are the lyrics in modern French spelling with a quite literal translation. Some French wordings feel clumsy, I suppose they feel even clumsier once translated.

LA ROSÉE DU JOLI MOIS DE MAI

La rosée du joli mois de mai
A mouillé ma mie et moi.

Ce fut alors que l'aurore
Commençait à se lever
Qu'avec celle que j'adore
M'en allais au bois jouer

Dessus l'herbette perlée
Au lieu le plus gracieux
Sans crainte de la rosée
Nous nous assîmes tous deux

Où, au flair* des fleurs fleurantes
Au chant de cent mille oiseaux
Au doux bruit des eaux coulantes
Je lui raconte mes maux

Je lui conte le martyre
Que j'ai souffert en l'aimant
Elle m'écoutant, soupire
Puis me conte son tourment.

Ainsi qu'elle, je soupire
Puis fondant tous deux en pleurs,
Muets, nous ne pouvons dire
Sinon, baisez-moi je meurs.

Lors je l'accole et la serre,
Elle m'embrasse et contraint
Non moins fort que le lierre
La muraille qui l'étreint.

Un million lui en donne
Pour son deuil récompenser
Elle autant m'en abandonne
Pour mon tourment effacer

Mille baisers je lui pille
Elle m'en dérobe autant
Je lui en prête cent mille
Elle les rend tout comptant.

Folâtre ores je baisote
Son sein beau et argentin
Ores friand, je suçote
La fraise de son tétin.

Ha ! Mon mignon, ce dit-elle,
C'est assez, vous avez tort,
Et cependant, mon oreille,
Elle baise et puis la mord.

Ha ! Vous me mordez, mignarde,
Lui dis-je, vous le paierez,
Je sais bien que je vous garde
Ça, ça vraiment vous l'aurez.

Lors, je lui dis quelque chose,
Mais quoi, je n'en dirai rien,
Car de le dire je n'ose
Et si vous m'entendez bien.

Ô, trop heureuse journée
Je ne voudrais être un roi,
Et que si douce rosée
N'eût mouillé ma mie et moi.

Je ne voudrais un empire
Échanger à mes amours :
J'aime trop mieux pouvoir dire
Maintenant et à toujours.

* Variant: "En cueillant des fleurs fleurantes" (Picking fragrant flowers)

THE DEW OF THE PRETTY MONTH OF MAY

The dew of the pretty month of May
Has made my sweetheart and me wet.

It was when the dawn
Started to rise
That with the one I adore,
I went to the wood to play

On the beaded grass
On the most gracious place,
Without fearing the dew,
The two of us sat.

There, in the fragrance of fragrant flowers,
In the singing of a hundred thousand birds,
In the sweet noise of the flowing waters,
I tell her my aches.

I tell her the martyrdom
I suffered through loving her,
She, listening to me, sighs,
Then tells me her torment.

Like her, I sigh,
Then, both bursting into tears,
Dumb, we can only say,
"Kiss me, I'm dying."

Then I hug her and squeeze her,
She embraces me and crushes me,
Not less tight than the ivy
Does the wall it clutches to.

A million [kisses] I give her
To reward her grief (lit. mourning)
She abandons as many to me
To erase my torment.

I steal her a thousand kisses,
She robs as many from me,
I lend her a hundred thousand,
She gives them back outright.

Now, frisky, I kiss repeatedly
Her beautiful and silver-white breast,
Now, greedy, I suck
The strawberry of her nipple.

"Ha! Sweetheart", she says now,
"It's enough, you're wrong,"
And nevertheless, she kisses
My ear and then bites it.

"Ha! You bite me, you cutie,"
I tell her, you'll pay for it,
"I know that I keep you,
That, that, for sure you'll get it."**

Then, I tell her something,
But what? I'll say nothing of it,
For I don't dare to say it
And yes, you do understand me.

Oh, too happy day.
I wouldn't want to be a king
If such a sweet dew
Wouldn't have moistened my sweetheart and me.

I wouldn't want to exchange
An empire for my love.
I love much better to be able to say
Now and forever.

** I take it to mean "I know that I keep you [I won't let you go], / That [the fact that you bit me], that [repeated], you'll get it ["it" = "my revenge"]. I don't think it means "I guard/watch you".

THE MAYPOLE (Traditional) by The Oldham Tinkers

Who made the flowers grow, the flowers grow, the flowers grow?
Who made the flowers grow? Tra la la la la la.
God made the flowers grow, the flowers grow, the flowers grow.
God made the flowers grow, tra la la la la la.

Chorus: We’ll skip the Maypole, the Maypole, the Maypole,
We’ll skip the Maypole, tra la la la la la.

Who made the fishes swim, the fishes swim, the fishes swim?

Who made the birdies sing, the birdies sing, the birdies sing?

Molly dancers kicking up a row, kicking up a row, kicking up a row.
Molly dancers kicking up a row, my fair lady.
Cheese and bread, the owd cows dead, bake it in a lantern.
A bit for thee and a bit for me and a bit for the Molly dancers.

When the Oldham Tinkers were kids the last three days of April were hectic. People’s back yards were hives of activity as the little girls prepared their Maypole outfits and practiced their routines, which varied little anyway. This is one of the songs they sang as they danced, unaware that they were perpetuating an ancient fertility rite. The actual performances took place on the first three days of May.

First recorded and published by Topic Records 1975. Album - FOR OLD TIME’S SAKE TOPIC 12TS276

There is a version of BALLINDERRY (Bonny Ram's Island) with the verse

O. lonely I wander on bonny Church Island
Far, far away from Phelimy Diamond
The birds may whistle a merry tune,
But sorrowful May brought woeful June.

I add it to a different version, so I sing Bonny Ram's Island rather than Church Island.

Now rosy May comes in wi' flowers,
To deck her gay, green-spreading bowers;
And now comes in the happy hours,
To wander wi' my Davie.

SCHOONER INDUSTRY

First stanza:

Come all you noble colored tars, that plow the raging main
Come & listen to my story boys, a thing that is quite strange
It was on the 8th of May, me boys, 1822
A schooner from Nantucket, boys with all a colored crew

Later stanzas mention the 4th of July, and the 10th of July.

The song is on the Finn and Haddie album, Fathom This. The liner notes say,

"My friend, great singer/musician & writer of sea songs & shanties, Jerry Bryant dug this up from the log of the Industry & culled it down from 40 verses to eight. Jerry put this to a traditional tune, without the chorus, as he found it. The tune here is from Neil Downey as well as its new chorus. Historically I've found the song very accurate & from the report of the Commissioners of Fish & Fisheries where in the remarks column it has the crew as "manned wholly by blacks" as well as the brig Traveler also mentioned in this song. Absalom S. Boston a Nantucketer, land owner, inn keeper & merchant put to sea at the age of 15 in 1800 & retired from sea after this voyage. He was married to the granddaughter of the famous Black/Indian sea captain Paul Cuffe who also commanded & owned a brig by the same name of Traveler only 7 yrs earlier, most likely they are one in the same although I've yet to verify this. Interestingly enough the Bostons were also no strangers to litigation. His uncle Prince Boston, a slave sailor was the first on Nantucket to sue for his ships pay & won. Absalom himself sued the state of Massachusetts on behalf of his daughter & niece for school integration of the state school on Nantucket & won, this being a first time in the nation. I'd like to thank Jerry for his blessing to record this gem."

The full lyrics are given in a Mudcat thread about the album,

The data in DIGITRAD has a problem. Although there was another accident in 1959 that killed nine workers closer to the surface, this accident did not occur in 1963, it occurred in May 1965 -- and this song was written by Kay Cothran and copyrighted in September of 1965. She said in the copyright that the tune was an extensive reworking of Streets of Laredo. The information eventually was published in a government report, but the papers were quite quiet about it at the time, hence the outrage that sparked the song.

Source for the disaster details: https://usminedisasters.miningquiz.com/saxsewell/C_L_Cline_No2.htm

C. L. Kline Coal Company
No. 2-A Mine Explosion
Robbins, Scott County, Tennessee
May 24, 1965
No. Killed - 5
USBM Final Investigation Report (2.3 Mb)
An explosion, originating in the face area of the left main aircourse, killed all five men in the mine. The explosion occurred when a methane accumulation was ignited by a cigarette lighter. The methane was emitted from crevices in the roof near the face.

The mine was classified non-gassy by the State. The owner-operator was the only one that possessed a flame safety lamp. He reportedly made a gas check during his pre-shift examination.

Ventilation was inadequate. The mine fan was not capable of supplying air flow appropriate to the size of the mine. Also the eight inby stoppings in the mains were constructed of brattice cloth and the left main aircourse was advanced 300 feet inby the last open crosscut with a line curtain terminated 25 feet from the face.

Dust from coal on the conveyors and from spillage along the conveyor lines entered into the propagation.

    BY THE GREEN GROVE
aka The Birds in the Spring

One May morning early I chanced for to roam
And strolled through the field by the side of the grove.
It was there I did hear the harmless birds sing,
And you never heard so sweet, and you never heard so sweet, you never heard so sweet as the birds in the spring.
