Subject: RE: BS: Thinking Allowed (BBC Podcasts) From: DaveRo Date: 21 Apr 21 - 10:20 AM If using a browser, rather than the BBC Sounds App, the thing to know is that there are two versions of the page which describes a programme and allows you to play it. E.g. this one with 'sounds' in the URL: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/b018wy4j And this one with 'programmes' in the URL https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b018wy4j Note that the Programme ID - b018wy4j - is the same. Only the second one has the download button. If it only has 'Listen now' it's not downloadable, e.g. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000v86t There is a link from the first to the second - 'Programme website'. If you click 'Listen now' on the second it will go to the first. All that is my experience. It might be different on your computers and will no doubt change in future. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thinking Allowed (BBC Podcasts) From: JHW Date: 20 Apr 21 - 03:47 PM Thanks, the BBC page offered me a download (didn't say podcast) which worked fine and indeed I could have kept it if I'd wanted to hear again. My mobile phone has buttons for apps but its is only kept in the car in case of breakdown. I am not attached to a phone as many are. Future generations will probably have something implanted. iplayer used to work but Sounds doesn't so I've given up catching up on missed programmes. Missed it now means simply I've missed it. No problem. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thinking Allowed (BBC Podcasts) From: DaveRo Date: 19 Apr 21 - 07:16 AM 'Podcast' used to have a specific meaning, referring to the method of delivery. These day podcast is usually synonymous with download. The BBC seems to use 'podcast' to refer to downloads of radio programs for which it owns the copyright, and do not have to be played though iPlayer or their own website. They are usually (always?) part of a series, like In Our Time, rather than one-off programmes. They are usually available to download for a long time, and can be kept for ever. If you go to the BBC programme page - the one with 'programmes' in the URL (which is accessible from the BBC Sounds page which the OP linked to) then you'll see a Download button. You get an mp3 or similar which you can play on any media player. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000qm0d There are other ways to get BBC podcasts, for example from a podcast app which will automatically download the next one in the series. It depends what computer or mobile device you have. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thinking Allowed (BBC Podcasts) From: JHW Date: 19 Apr 21 - 06:29 AM Like many a BBC programme I've often heard Laurie's programmes by chance. My laptop won't play old BBC programmes any more but will download fine when one is offered. Is a Podcast similar to a Download? |

Subject: RE: BS: Thinking Allowed (BBC Podcast - N. Ireland) From: DaveRo Date: 16 Apr 21 - 05:50 PM I had no idea (living in the south of England) that the Orange Order in Scotland was anything more than a loose identity and affiliation with a footbal club. And yet it seems they're not just 'theoretically' anti-Catholic but believe in a world Catholic conspiracy - in a way that mirrors ant-Semitism. |

Subject: RE: BS: Thinking Allowed (BBC Podcast - N. Ireland) From: The Sandman Date: 16 Apr 21 - 05:08 PM Yes, a fascinating insight, particularly how the OrangeOrder inScotland differs from the Orange Order of Ulster |
