Just published on The Guardian website:

‘Is folk music a potent political tool? I would say: my arse’

Make of it what you will.

I agree with some of what she has said, but not everything
MacColl, sat like that for a reason, it is not about posing but posture, a similiar idea to Prof Alexander, posture and breathing exercise improve your singing technique., and his preparation and professionalism is something that is worth giving some thought and study too
MacColls singing technique was much better than Shirley Collins imo.
Shirley Collins is a very nice person and a singer whose performances I have enjoyed, I agree with her description of MacColl as being rather domineering, he was also someone who was happy to give help and time free of charge, and who formed the critics group to try and help younger singers.
People are often complex, and who have good and bad points.
I think theabove is a fairer description. Dick Miles

Singers can train their voices without sounding like classical singers. vocal warm up exercises and breathing exercises help singers as they grow older not to lose or damage their voice.
MacColl advocated vocal warm up exercises, and on that particular subject he was right
Singing chromatic scales can help intonation.
Extending vocal range, can be attained by finding your lowest and highest note then taking an instrument and aiming for a semitone either lower or higher, all this is voice training.

For some reason it makes me very happy that she is a fan of Alasdair Roberts.

I have been in conversations with Alistair and Shirley in hotels in Brussels and in Glasgow and I can tell you that the admiration is mutual. ??

I preferred MaCclls version of Lord Randall, all a matter of taste
i found Roberts version good but a bit expressionless

I utterly love Shirley and possess most of her recordings, all of which I cherish. "Anthems," wonderful. A lovely compilation album called Fountain Of Snow, I treasure. Best of all, No Roses. Drops hot shit on Fairport and Steeleye in m'humble.

But Shirley: "I can’t bear Schumann or Schubert, and once spent a whole afternoon with somebody who was convinced I ought to like them and played me two whole LPs worth of stupid songs." What!! I love some of Schumann and Schubert but I rarely listen to their songs because the buggers are in German! That comment is not a good look, frankly! I decided a long time ago to either learn German or ignore their songs (they both composed much else apart from songs). Well, I haven't learned German...

There must have been a medical reason for Shirley losing her voice.

A friend of mine has told me a couple of incidents which showed her in a very favorable light to be a thoroughly kind and decent person.
