ROMPIN' ROVIN' DAYS
(Bruce Murdoch)

Hey, I've been a rambler all my rompin' rovin' days
A railway boy with nothin' for to do
My people waved farewell somewheres down the road
For hobos, friend, are only passin' through.

Now I've seen every city from San Marcos in the south
To the concrete fenced-in walls of New York town
And everywhere I go my name nobody wants to know
And the talkin' seems to stop when I'm around.

Now all in my life I've been quickly cast aside
Though my handshake never meant less than your own
If there's any which way for to fully understand
Then tell me 'cause I'd surely like to know.

For every mile I rode a freight train, I walked a city block
Gazin' through the windows at the goods I couldn't buy
But the thing that hurts me most is when I'm wanderin' alone
And no one cares enough to ask me why.

Hey, I've been a rambler all my rompin' rovin' days
A railway boy with nothin' for to do
My people waved farewell somewheres down the road
For hobos, friend, are only passin' through.

Boy thanks - I've been singing this song since the 60's. Anyone know where Bruce Murdoch is these days?

Bob

After going through it, these are the words I remember.

ROMPIN' ROVIN' DAYS

Hey, I have been a rambler all my rompin' rovin' days
A railway boy with nothin' for to do
My people wave farewell somewheres down the road
A hobos, friend, I'm only passin' through.

Now I've seen every city from San Marcos in the south
To the sunny concrete fenced-in walls of New York town
And everywhere I go my name nobody wants to know
And the talkin' seems to stop when I'm around.

Now all in my life I've been quickly cast aside
Though my handshake never meant less than your own
If there's any which way for to truly understand
Then tell me 'cause I'd surely like to know.

For every mile of freight train, I've walked a city block
Gazin' through the windows at the goods I couldn't buy
But the thing that hurts me most is when I'm wanderin' alone
And nobody cares enough to ask me why.

Hey, I've been a rambler all my rompin' rovin' days
A railway boy with nothin' for to do
My people wave farewell somewheres down the road
A hobos, friend, I'm only passin' through.

For Bob Lusk:

Bruce gave up performing about 20 years ago and moved out to Alberta. Eventually, he went back to school and became a high school teacher.

A couple of years ago, I heard he'd become a school principal but has now gone back to teaching.

Back in 1972 when I first started producing college concerts in Montreal, Bruce was the first performer I ever booked. Then in 1974, when I took over a folk club in Montreal called the Golem, Bruce was again the first performer I booked.

I could suggest you don't do the song. However, here are the chords.

(D) I've been a (G) rambler all my (D) romping roving days
A railway boy with (G) nothing for to (D) do- (A) oo
My (G) people bid (D) farewell (G) somewhere down the (D) road
A (G) hobo friend I'm only passing (D) through

If you want a really good piece, learn this one.

PS Although I dispute your taste in music, I thank you for keeping me off the political threads.

I was introduced to the work of Bruce Murdoch by listening to the Bill Staines recording of "Rompin' Rovin' Days." Don't know that I'd ever heard the Bruce Murdoch recording of this song until I found a copy on YouTube this evening. The notes say it comes from an album titled "Folksong '65" - that means the song is 47 years old now. I wonder what Bruce thinks of his song now, after all those years. I like it, myself.

Click here for a more recent Bruce Murdoch recording, "I'm at the Mercy of Your Smile." Nice song.

Last time I caught him, Bob, Bruce was not recording (although he might have gotten back to it), and teaching English in Bashaw, Alberta. I think he subsequently moved, don't know where to. Good to see that you remember, too! Art Altman (arthurltmn@yahoo.com)
