Used to sing this song when I was quite a bit younger.

'Twas the story of a young'un who planted the stick from a lollipop.

All I remember now of the words is part of the chorus:

And every day I watered it well And watched it carefully I hoped some day that stick would grow To be a Lollipop Tree

And another phrase about 'broke those icicles off, they they turned into ice cream cones'.

I was trying to impress my wife with this site..told her there is almost no song which at least someone doesn't know..She challenged me with "Find the words to a song from my childhood "My Name is Mary Make Believe"...Since 10/5, no response..so she says tonight, try "Lollipop Tree" How about it..anyone able to help me impress her with either of these?

Lollipop Tree definitely a Burl Ives. Discussed here several times the past year, but no one ever really found it. Do a forum search, putting 'lollipop' in the body box, and you will at least see the discussion.....Tiger

Just a question on credits: I have it on Burl Ives "A Twinkle In Your Eye" - Sony LK 63420. The credit given there is "Music and Lyrics By J.Darion and G. Kleinsinger". There are also some minor differences in the words.

BTW, I love this song - I burst into tears on my 40th birthday last year when I played it on the CD given to me as a birthday present by a friend in the US.

Hmmm. I have the Limeliters "Through Children's Eyes," a reissue on a Folk Era CD. No songwriter attribution at all. I think I'll go with Jon's attribution information, unless somebody has other information.

I don't own any recorded version of this, but I have a distinct memory, buried deep within my brain, of a chorus that goes something like:

Ha Ha Ha, Ho Ho Ho
what a sight to see.
Me and my lollipop, lollipop, lollipop
lollipop, lollipop tree.

Or that first line might be "Ha Ha Ha, you and me".

I may very well have heard the Burl Ives recording at an early age, accounting for the memory. I'll never know for sure!

I checked the Harry Fox Agency's songfile.com for this song. It's officially titled "The Lollipop Tree," written by Joe Darion and George Kleinsinger. It was recorded by Burl Ives, Ginger Sands, The Irish Rovers, Phyllis Hughes, Wayne Potash, the Limeliters, Josh White (Jr.) and others.

Cultural tidbits:
George Kleinsinger and Paul Tripp wrote the "Tubby the Tuba" song and "The Happy Clarinet," among others.

Joe Darion and Mitch Leigh wrote the songs from Man of La Mancha. Joe Offer's first actual date with a female of the opposite sex was to attend Man of La Mancha in Milwaukee....

The lollipop tree was a song I performed in kindergarten for the whole school, how I wound up in front of that audience I don't remember. I was a child prodigy, everything I did was blown up to extremes. We had someone who came in to play guitar and sing for us, they sang "under my lollipop tree" (which typically, I would have debated as total nonsense and the lyrics absurd) but I got excited and when it ended I jumped up and sang it back to the guitar player, full of drama and exaggeration. I got applause and was bewildered by it, thinking they were making too big a deal of something silly I actually liked without mocking it. I was known for being outspoken and correcting teachers? They didn't plan to teach us the song, but it wound up putting me in front of the microphone. I'm looking at the lyrics, I knew slightly different ones, but I notice more then one version? I miss that song, I went on to being part of the childrens division of the San Francisco opera company and the female lead singer of an all male band -along with too many other abilities and one of a kind accomplishments, as expected of normal gifted-people. I used to try singing the lollipop tree to my kids, who are gifted as well, and looked at me with eyebrows raised "lollipop tree, mom...?" not the same amusement I got from it. As a tribute, I sang it during a concert with the band after a request for "I love rock and roll", telling the audience it was for contrast. They appreciated it. HA HA HA -ho ho ho, what a sight to see? Under my lollipop tree.

I'm having a little trouble here, but I can tell you that Burl Ives recorded "The Lollipop Tree" in 1950. I didn't find earlier recordings, and my Burl Ives songbooks don't include the 'pop" songs he recorded. Along with comments about my love life above, you will find that the song was written by Joe Darion and George Kleinsinger.

This sheet music is dated 1951, so it looks like 1950-51 is a good date.

I notice that in that record, that there is a notation of "50 cents"; could it be that this be a copyright transfer rather than a record of an original copyright? Strange... Howsoever, it's true that I can find no earlier record of the song in the Copyright Office records...

Burl Ives may have been the singer of The Lollipop Tree, but he did not write it.
