Subject: Who's eating my cookie? From: ddw Date: 24 Mar 00 - 12:50 AM Can any of you computer whizes tell me why every time I go to another bookmarked site and come back to the Mudcat my cookie is gone? Is it possible the machine I use has an automatic purge function for "foreign" things like cookies? david |

Subject: RE: Who's eating my cookie? From: katlaughing Date: 24 Mar 00 - 12:54 AM ddw, go to the top of your browser and click on Tools, then look for Internet Options. Buried int here somewhere is a setting for cookies. Yours in probably set to never accept them. You can change it to always accept or prompt before accepting. It used to be easy to find to change the setting, but I just downloaded and installed the newest version of IE and had to really hunt in the Internet Options for them. Finally found them under Security, then Custom Options or Settings. (Sorry can't remember which.) Hope that is clearer than mud! kat |

Subject: RE: Who's eating my cookie? From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Mar 00 - 01:10 AM Listen to kat, ddw. Pay no attention to the rest of 'em. They've been really weird lately. But if kat's advice doesn't take care of it, post a message in the Help Forum and we'll work out a solution. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Who's eating my cookie? From: Jon Freeman Date: 24 Mar 00 - 02:31 AM kat, Assuming we are talking Internet Explorer 5, as you said, you go to Tools/Internet Options and Click on the Security Tab. You then make sure that you are changing the correct zone - in this case click on Internet. Any of the default security settings except High Security will accept cookies (the default setting for the Internet Zone is to use Medium security). It a Custom setting rather than a preset default is used on for this zone, it may be necessary to click the Custom button and adjust the settings for cookies as you described. I have not tried this but as far as I can see, for those who don't like cluttering their machine with cookies but want to use the Mudcat cookie, it may be possible to block cookies on the Internet zone and set Mudcat up as a trusted site and alter the settings for that zone to suit. I must try it sometime. Jon |

Subject: RE: Who's eating my cookie? From: Jon Freeman Date: 24 Mar 00 - 02:45 AM Just had a play. Disabling cookies does not cause me the problem that ddw is experiencing. It simply won't allow the cookie to reset and I am aways a guest. Making Mudcat into a trusted site has worked as expected so if anybody using IE 5 who would accept the Mudcat cookie but no others could adopt the approach I suggested. Jon |

Subject: RE: Who's eating my cookie? From: katlaughing Date: 24 Mar 00 - 08:35 AM Jon, that didn't work for me, when I tried it. It told me any sites i wanted to enter as trusted HAD to use the https addy, so I put that in for the Mudcat and a couple of others and I still had to tell it to accept, next time. BUT, I've noticed if I tell it to accept the Mudcat once, when prompted, then I don't have to do it, again. thanks, kat |

Subject: RE: Who's eating my cookie? From: Bill D Date: 25 Mar 00 - 10:58 PM well, I still have the strange situation that, if I come DIRECTLY to the forum, my cookie is fine, but if I go to the www.mudcat.org page, where it takes an extra click to get to the forum, my cookie is no longer recognized!,It is still there, just not seen, and I have to go back out and come in the other way. |

Subject: RE: Who's eating my cookie? From: Amos Date: 25 Mar 00 - 11:08 PM Caitrin, don't pay any attention. You give first rate cookie. IF you were using a Mac I'd tell you to purge a prefs file or zap the p-RAN. But I dunno how to fix your WIndows setup sight unseen. Scary idea! Y'know who might be in there? |
