A literal translation, sung to the tune of the Strawberry Roan

Der Abbara Gall The Other Horse

Dat drunna in de galls' korrel Down in the horse corral
Dat vor er g'stunna there he was standing
Sy schwantz ere vor hinna his tail in the back
Sy kopf ere funna his head in the front
Mit sy kopf in de hey with his head up high
Und sy schwantz hinna draus and his tail straight out
Ich hop ihn g'gukt I looked at him
Und bin schprunna fas haus and ran for the house

Ich hop glangt fa der zahm I reached for the bridle
Und no fa der saddle and then for the saddle
Ich hop g'saht ich raight ihn I said I would ride him
fa un dalla un a faddle for a dollar and a quarter
Ich hop un gonny sack grigt I got a gunny sack
Un sy auwa zu g'bunna and tied it around his eyes
Hop der saddle druff g'schlapt then I slapped on the saddle
Un my finga uff g'shunna skinning my finger

Ich hop my fus in der stirrup I put my foot in the stirrup
Und bin druff g'chumpt and on him I jumped
Hop der blint ap g'tzauwa I pulled off his blind
Ich hop g'vist vas necht kumpt wondering what would come next
Ich hop ihn g'kicked I kicked his side
Un in de hey sin mir g'flauwa and into the air we flew
Hop my auwa zu g'drickt I pressed my eyes tight shut
Und hop hodda g'zuawa and pulled hard

Ere haut mich nunna g'bucked He bucked me off straight down
Grauht nunna uff der kopf right on my head
Ich hop g'glaubt ich gey veida I believed I would go farther
Ava dat hop ich g'schopt but there I stopped dead
Ich vor im drecht I was in filth
biss nuff un de gnee up to my knees
Ava smencht da fon wa jusht though most of it was just
So gele misht bree. Very yellow manure juice

That's interesting, but it has no relation whatever to The Strawberry Roan as I've heard, known, and sung it over many years.

Oh, I guess I was getting the cart before the strawberry roan, so to speak. It's an English translation of an Amish song to the same tune as Strawberry Roan. Okay. Now I got it. Put it down to my mental slowitude.

You got it, Dave! But looking at it, I realize I should have put it in more correct colloquial German instead of copying it from a sheet someone gave me. For instance, "hop" I should have written as "hab'". I'm embarrassed! It would hage been easy to do correctly.

Also, I had put the translation on the same line but separated by space- it didn't come through that way but got jumbled together instead. Ah, well, live and learn... Ebbie

Hi, Ebbie - I put in preformat tags
before and
after the part in columns, and it came out almost right. The song is great.

Ebbie,
a fine song, thanks for posting it. But I do not agree at all when you write you should have used colloquial German instead. It is much better as it is now:
- "Ich hop g'vist vas necht kumpt" gives a much better idea of pronounciation and of the German dialect used than "Ich habe gewusst, was als Nächstes kommt".
- some words are so old that they are not used anymore, at least not in that sense. If I read "g'schunna'" I hear an old meaning of "schinden" and that would get lost in a 'translation' to modern German.
- in some words that are similar in German and English you can see the slow intrusion of the English pronounciation and spelling ("g'flauwa" "misht"). That would be lost as well.
- And then, you can see how some English words with no good German equivalent ("gonny" "stirrup") have come into that language.

If yoe feel like posting more Amish songs, I'll love to read them as they are.

Wolfgang

Thanks, guys!

Joe, I'll have to do more reading on the Help threads. I'm still not sure where

and
go.
Do you put them respectively beforethe beginning line of text, after the beginning line and again before the next text on the same line?
And where does it go in relation to br?
In any case, thanks for doing it- it's a lot more readable now.

Wolfgang, thank you!
And I see what you mean and shall keep it in mind.
I have more 'Amish' material which I will post from time to time, thanks for asking.

The Amish, being farmers traditionally, tend to have somewhat earthy humor- or is that a German trait?
We used to find some things hilarious that some gentler folk might find appalling.
Usually involving barnyard mishaps, as in the horse song above.

Incidentally, any and all of the Amish things I post are definitely public domain and if anyone wants to tweak, add, change words to fit the tune or put them to any other tune feel free to do so. Ebbie
