I have more 'Amish' material which I will post from time to time, thanks for asking.

The Amish, being farmers traditionally, tend to have somewhat earthy humor- or is that a German trait?
We used to find some things hilarious that some gentler folk might find appalling.
Usually involving barnyard mishaps, as in the horse song above.

Incidentally, any and all of the Amish things I post are definitely public domain and if anyone wants to tweak, add, change words to fit the tune or put them to any other tune feel free to do so. Ebbie

a fine song, thanks for posting it. But I do not agree at all when you write you should have used colloquial German instead. It is much better as it is now:
- "Ich hop g'vist vas necht kumpt" gives a much better idea of pronounciation and of the German dialect used than "Ich habe gewusst, was als Nächstes kommt".
- some words are so old that they are not used anymore, at least not in that sense. If I read "g'schunna'" I hear an old meaning of "schinden" and that would get lost in a 'translation' to modern German.
- in some words that are similar in German and English you can see the slow intrusion of the English pronounciation and spelling ("g'flauwa" "misht"). That would be lost as well.
- And then, you can see how some English words with no good German equivalent ("gonny" "stirrup") have come into that language.

If yoe feel like posting more Amish songs, I'll love to read them as they are.

You got it, Dave! But looking at it, I realize I should have put it in more correct colloquial German instead of copying it from a sheet someone gave me. For instance, "hop" I should have written as "hab'". I'm embarrassed! It would hage been easy to do correctly.

Also, I had put the translation on the same line but separated by space- it didn't come through that way but got jumbled together instead. Ah, well, live and learn... Ebbie

Oh, I guess I was getting the cart before the strawberry roan, so to speak. It's an English translation of an Amish song to the same tune as Strawberry Roan. Okay. Now I got it. Put it down to my mental slowitude.
