ONE BY ONE
(Woody Guthrie)

One by one the words come slowly as I write to you,
One by one my teardrops fall upon the page.
One by one my hopes are dark'ning in the twilight,
One by one, one by one they die away.

CHO: One by one my hairs are turning gray,
One by one my dreams are fading fast away.
One by one I read your letters o'er,
One by one I lay them all away.

One by one the flow'rs are fading in my garden,
One by one the leaves are falling from the trees.
One by one the days and nights are growing colder,
One by one the snowflakes tumble in the breeze.

Oh well, I tried to punch in an ascii file and the lines got all run together. You can probably see where the lines start. It has a really nice melody too. Johnny

this one is on the Mermaid Avenue CD by Billy Bragg & Wilco - they wrote the tunes to some Woody Guthrie lyrics - is this the tune you are refering to, Banjo Johnny? It's one of my favourites on the album (hard to choose - they're all good!).

By the way, Volume II of Mermaid Avenue is out - I'm listening to it now and it's as good as the first. I'd recommend both as well worth a listen...

Well I got the lines spaced apart that time. If you print this with fixed spacing like Courier, all the notes and chords will come out in the right place. - Johnny in OKC
