Subject: RE: Mail Myself to You (Woody Guthrie) From: Felipa Date: 29 Jul 20 - 03:55 PM I read a newspaper article about the history of a slave who mailed himself to freedom, and subsequently lived as a performer re-telling the tale. I immediately thought of this song. https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2019/12/28/slavery-cost-him-his-family-thats-when-henry-box-brown-mailed-himself-freedom/ |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Mail Myself to You (Woody Guthrie) From: Felipa Date: 20 Apr 24 - 07:31 PM can anywone verify the following information recently posted by Michelle Koester on Facebook "Prior to 1920, it was possible to send children through the US Postal service. However, there were certain conditions that needed to be met. Firstly, the children had to weigh less than 50 pounds, and stamps were attached to their clothing as a form of payment. Surprisingly, it was often more cost-effective for individuals to send their children via mail rather than opting for train transportation. Interestingly, during the journey, the children would travel on a train, specifically in the mail car, where they were supervised and provided with nourishment by mail clerks. One remarkable example of this unconventional practice involved a distance of over 700 miles, from Florida to Virginia, covered with a mere 15 cents worth of stamps" |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Mail Myself to You (Woody Guthrie) From: GerryM Date: 20 Apr 24 - 11:20 PM https://facts.usps.com/sending-kids-in-the-mail/ sez, Do not try to ship your kids!! In the early days of Parcel Post, a few parents managed to mail their children to relatives. In 1913, an 8-month-old baby in Ohio was mailed by his parents to his grandmother, who lived a few miles away. The baby was safely delivered! Regulations were quickly established to prevent any additional mailing of children through the U.S. Mail. |
