Thanks to Allan and Bill's Adventure, I've met seven Mudcatters. Wonderful folks all. Now you've met your share. If we could somehow tally it all up, I'd bet hundreds of new friendships have been formed along their route. Hard to say how many new Mudcatters have been added. In addition to having the time of their lives, they have, they have given us all an invaluable gift: face to face friendship, which will last long after this thread is but a memory, (unless it's permafrosted)! I hope they write a book about it. Could become a best seller if done right. If not, then we have this thread, which is turning into quite a work in itself, and it's not over yet! Anyway, welcome again, Ivan, You just experienced something magical. The word "magic" seems to pop up over and over in this thread. It's been years since I've participated in a session (and, last night, I added only my voice) but it was every bit as enjoyable as any I've ever experienced. The added experience of getting to meet my first in-the-flesh Mudcatters made it even more special. And I can echo Big Mick's enthusiasm over Bill's rendition of 'The Mermaid' as well as the rest of the repertoire, some familiar, some not, that he and Allan were able to present. What a joy! |

As you can tell from this post, it is now about 1:50 AM on Saturday morning. The evening started off a bit slow as far as musicians arriving. But the day was saved by a couple that are fans of the band. They showed up with 15 lbs. ( a little over a stone, FAIR ONE) of home made bangers. There was plenty of sweets, and such so we sat around and enjoyed the craic, and the food. Didn't take Bill and Allan long to find a set of darts and start a game. After a bit, Tom Verlin (mandolin player), Jim Goldsmith (guitar, fiddle and other things, most notably the husband of Darla), Jon Koeze (bass, guitar, 48 button concertina)and others joined us and we sat down and played music for three hours. Towards the end a piper stopped by with a couple of sets of Scottish Smallpipes. Bill and Allan, as they have everywhere, charmed the pants off of everyone. Bill proselytized, recruited, and swore in several new 'Catters. Oh yes, I almost forgot. One of our newest Mudcatters, IvanB, drove over from Lansing and we greatly enjoyed his company. Bill did "The Mermaid" and I see why everyone loves it so. I must learn it although I doubt I could do it as enjoyably as Bill. All in all I would say that our wandering Ambassadors of Mudcat were responsible for a wonderful and enjoyable evening. As I said before, they are a treasure. Enjoy them when they get there. And get Allen to tell you how he and the wee Ciara tried to string the aul Big Mick up. But I was too quick for them........LOL. We are off tomorrow for a trip to Elderly, and then get them on their way to Toronto. All the best, Big Mick |

There was a white buffalo on a ranch near Helena when I was growing up, and he was called Big Medicine. It was no problem to drive by and see him. When he died, he was stuffed and placed in the historical museum in Helena, near the Capitol. We used to go over to the museum and pat him on the nose. The spot became worn and shiny from all the kids touching him. He is still there today. |

I have been reading and re-reading the many flattering comments which have been posted here and in the previous incarnations of this thread. I know for certain that if I ever get to a point in my life when I am feeling a bit low, I will be able to read the lovely things written here and will be restored.
One of the largest regrets I have had during this trip has been our inability to tarry longer at our stops. Certainly our time at Alice's was no exception. I had once lived in Montana - courtesy of the US Air Force. The years since then had dulled my memory of how beautiful a place Montana is. It is majestic, enthralling, wondrous and beautiful! It was a priviledge to see it again. Alice was able to convey much to us in the way of local history and a few quips about the people of the area around Bozeman.
I should mention that just before dark, as we were leaving Montana, I caught sight of a roadside sign which indicated something about "White Buffalo". I think Bill thought I had gone totally crazy when I suddenly yelled at him to stop the car and go back. It had sunk into my weary mind that this place was the home of the sacred white buffalo which was born about two years ago. For those of you who don't know, the birth of the white buffalo is a very significant event for many Native Americans. The shameful thing was that the owners were charging $8.50 each to view this wonder. To me, this is like charging a fee to worship in front of a statue of Buddha. Thank goodness for a good zoom feature on the camera! I wish I had more time to tell you about our visit with Art and with Homeless. Maybe tomorrow. Gotta go! Mick is calling. |

Bright and early, Allan was up looking for a coffee pot. The lad beat me out of the sack and the coffee was waiting. We sat and played pennywhistles, and a little guitar. I sang "Along the Famine Road" for him. This is the song that Ed Trickett gave me at the Getaway. That was the last time that I had seen Allan so I thought it a propos. Bill got up and introduced me to the joys of Yorkshire tea (marvelous stuff). Allan says it is black, but not vile. Bill then gave me a primer of Morris Dancing and played the squeeze box while my 8 year old demonstrated her step dancing skills. We are off for a bit of food, then Bill and Allan are going to ride along as I spread a little union around W. Michigan. There is a session tonight and Elderly Instruments tomorrow with a boat ride around Gun Lake tucked in there somewhere. Then it is off to Toronto with these lovely gents.
