Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: EBarnacle Date: 03 Apr 20 - 07:41 PM Pretty much all square riggers, even if they are built on a small boat hull, are considered tall ships. It is a courtesy title and describes a function, just as an ensign in charge of a prize vessel is captain of that vessel without reference to his earned rank. A senior enlisted man fulfilling the same function would get the same courtesy. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: keberoxu Date: 03 Apr 20 - 04:04 PM I don't know if the Mayflower II is tall or not. In May, she was to sail into Boston Harbor escorted by the USS Constitution or "Old Ironsides." This event has now been postponed, but NOT cancelled. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: EBarnacle Date: 31 Mar 20 - 11:23 PM The article says she may not be salvageable. They were raising the funds to have her hauled and got put off to June. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: Mrrzy Date: 30 Mar 20 - 11:36 AM That is sad news, indeed. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Mar 20 - 05:17 AM Sad to hear that the tall ship Pilgrim sank March 29 in Dana Point Harbor in Orange County, California. The ship is full-scale replica of the ship immortalized by Richard Henry Dana in his classic book ‘Two Years Before the Mast.’ |
Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: GUEST,Barry Finn Date: 11 Jul 00 - 11:25 PM Just got back from seeing the parade of the toy soldiers, eh, sorry tall ships. Boston did no better than NY maybe worse. I had a blast, saw them all, bumped into a buddy got onto the Mystic Whaler sang a few songs & then called it an early night in preparation fo tomorrow night's gig & then a party. The crowds were way under the expected & the access to the waterfront was severly resricted (almost nil), more crowd contol personnel than crowd even the guys in green camouflage. I guess I could've bought tickets to gain access to the waterfront but first I had no idea that I'd need to & I still have no idea on where you'd buy them or how much they'd cost, so I did what any true born Bostonian would do under these restraints of freedom, I snuck in (the 2 access points where I was were miles apart, nothing opened between Castle Island & the Federal Courthouse & me with my 2 bad feet, shame on them), later at 4:00pm the city decieded that the public should once again be able to have it's tea party & they opened the gates (ya, after the parade's all over).I still had a great time but it's a crime that it could've been so much better. Barry, hoping for a turnaround for tomorrow. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: GUEST,Barry Finn Date: 07 Jul 00 - 08:39 PM Hi Bill, sorry to hear that the New York visit wasn't up to snuff, hopefully Boston's showing will be as grand as it's been put up to be. There might be a difference between the Boston Parade & New York's. The two are handled by totally different organization's. Boston is the only official port on the mainland US for the TALL SHIP'S RACE 2000 whereas OP SAIL 2000 is a separate event though both envolve tall ships. I have no idea as to weither one is a better organizer than the other. Boston's last time hosting in 92 (Op Sail 92) was a poor showing on behalf of the city, water, electricity, pumping facilities, fuel access & poor planning for dock space were some of the complaints aside from the commerical exploiting at the cost of the crews (docking beside beer tents that mega blasted rock & roll alnight to sell their products). I should say that the city did respond within a few day to some of the oversights. Though the Russian sailors were selling their clothes for food. I'm shocked that there has been a request for maritime music this time around, last time it was up to the crews. Anyway here's to a hopefully spectacular time. Barry |
Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: Bill Hahn//\\ Date: 07 Jul 00 - 08:03 PM I hope, for the sake of the Boston folks (and Jacob B), that is is better organized than NYC. Pictures are nice---but certainly not even close to seeing the majestic creations in the flesh. Looks like the snafu has created quite a stir here--editorials in the NY TImes, letters and OpEd pieces. And rightfully so----Tides are predictable----but, turning around in a more dramatic spot for the TV cameras is predictable only to the Op Sail organizers who wanted to have it both ways---crowds and more coverage. Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: MMario Date: 07 Jul 00 - 10:28 AM My sister's home on the Cape (Cod) right now, and reports that there is a Tall Ship anchored at the Mass Maritime Academy, and that there are suppossed to be many of them moving through the canal this weekend. Evidently the plan is that they will each raise sail as they hit Cape Cod Bay. Should be an awesome sight if weather and wind cooperate. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 07 Jul 00 - 09:23 AM Apparantly there is a tall ship in Cardiff Bay this weekend. After work I am going to pop down to the bay, where a friend of mine has been asked to 'entertain the queues' for all day, and he asked me to pop down to join him and entertain the masses for a bit. Looking a bit cold here right now, so don't know if I will be warm enough to play my bodhran and whistle. Either way I am sure we will pop into a pub afterwards. I love tall ships. I remember the first time I saw a Tall ship. I was 7, on a day out with my mum and dad to Dover. We were stood on the cliffs, and we watched the tall ships race past - it was lovely. Ever since then I have loved them. I would love to actually have the opportunity to sail one. Ella

Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: CamiSu Date: 07 Jul 00 - 02:13 AM Any one know when they are in Boston? Portland would be easier but daughter Wavestar's Shakespeare in the orchard is supposed to open that weekend, and Mother-of-the-director is usually as stressed out as the director herself. I was on a 37' sloop in NY Harbor in '76, (feeling quite small) and they were pretty wonderful then. It's too bad OpSail can't maintain their schedule. Glad they don't run the trains--they'd dump you off halfway there. Cami |

Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: Bill Hahn//\\ Date: 06 Jul 00 - 06:46 PM If you are not from the metro NY/NJ area then TV was the best bet. If you were in lower Manhattan and were fortunate enough to get near the river the sight was no doubt awesome. My sympathies go out to the throngs of people on either side of the Hudson River near the Washington Bridge. I was at a friend's apartment with a terrace in that area. It was supposed to be the turnaround point for the ships on their way back to the berths. Roads had been closed to handle the crowds, people arrived hours ahead of time only to find that after 4 hrs of waiting the ships never came up that far citing tidal problems. Problems they knew of well in advance (as most of the area newspapers have now mentioned). The people who ran Op Sail (not the city) truly mismanaged what should have been a glorious event for the public on a "glorious 4th" and not for the few souls lucky enough to be in lower Manhattan--or on the JFK. Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: Kim C Date: 05 Jul 00 - 09:59 AM You guys are TOO MUCH! (rofl) I wish I could've seen the tall ships...... I don't have cable and I live in a landlocked state so I'm tall ship-challenged. Come to think of it, I'm also bosom-challenged. Well, not really, but enough not to qualify for Baywatch.... I was hoping they'd show some of the ships during the fireworks thing last night on NBC but they didn't. You know why it's called a Wonderbra, right? Cause when you take it off you wonder where your boobs went! (Actually I think I originally got that joke off another boob thread awhile back.....) |

Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: Liam's Brother Date: 04 Jul 00 - 06:25 PM Hi Kendall! We did a gig this morning on an observation boat sponsored by nautical history societies here. We were on the New York City ferryboat John F. Kennedy positioned between the QE2 and the actual "Parade of Sail" as it was called. The humidity was 97 as we left the apartment at 5:15AM and it was quite hazy. There was a commentator so I didn't have to sing durning the actual parade. I used the time taking still photographs and I'll try to post them later this week. Sure was a great day. In 1976, I sang at the Windows of the World restaurant atop the World Trade Center. It was equally hazy. The food was only just short of fabulous and the drink was free but the view, from 103 stories, was not exactly sharp. It's been a fine time here in NYC with fireworks to follow tonight. I wish our friends in Connecticut, Massachusetts, etc. equally enjoyable days to come.
All the best, |

Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: Dave Swan Date: 04 Jul 00 - 04:55 PM Hey Kendall, let's go over to the Fox network and see if we can't get a job for one of those girls on a tall ship. Doesn't really matter what her qualifications are, it could just be a figurehead sort of position. E.S. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: bflat Date: 04 Jul 00 - 04:41 PM MarkS, Very funny observation! The tall ships really are a majestic sight. Wish I braved the traffic for a closer look but then I would have missed the Williams sisters qualify for the Wimbeldon Semifinals. Now that is an American victory....congratulation to them. One of those times TV has added value. Seeing OpSail and Wimbeldon concurrently. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: SINSULL Date: 04 Jul 00 - 04:35 PM For anyone interested: I will be putting a set of limited edition prints of the Tall Ships from the 1976 OpSail on the Mudcat auction site. In '76, I drove a carful of kids over the Verrazano Bridge so that they could get to see the ships up close. The traffic was horrendous so I simply pulled over and parked. Soon everyone else followed suit and it was party time on the bridge. After about fifteen minutes, a lone police officer on a motorcycle came across the bridge with a bullhorn announcing "You are all under arrest!" The "kids" now parents themselves still talk about the day Aunt Mary got them all arrested. And oh those ships were beautiful! |

Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: GUEST,Barry Finn Date: 04 Jul 00 - 11:49 AM My work weeks will be just about be shot while there in Boston, except for looking at the roof of a 7 story building that needs roof repairs that overlooks the harbor, strange, my appointment to check it out is the same day the parade sails in & I think it'll take me all day, might as well stay there, have to sing for them later on. Hopefully at least one ship will be shorthanded one shantyman & I can sing my way to Halifax. If you're coming down Kendall or anyone else let me know. Barry |

I'm going to be in Oakdale from the 14th to about the 22nd for the Hobie 18 Continentals... racing in the waters off long Island. Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: kendall Date: 04 Jul 00 - 11:15 AM I dont recall this man, but, there was a man named Dunlop who did the same thing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tall ships From: JedMarum Date: 04 Jul 00 - 11:10 AM ... by the way; did I ever tell you about my friend Willie Dunlop (a Maine-iac like yerself)? He sailed his own 38 footer solo, along with the Tall Ships in 1976 across the Atlantic, and set the world record for a solo. He then built a 9'1" boat and sailed the Atlantic again, making headlines. I saw him on the Good Morning America Show, broadcasting from the UK, where Willie landed. When they asked him what he was going to do now, he answered that he going to sail back! Willie was a real character, with earthy humor, and strong Maine accent. I had the good fortune of sailing with him on a couple of weekend trips out of Apponaug RI (sorry for the spelling). He tried sailing the world in his tiny boat, and was lost off the coast of Australia in the late 70's. I have thought there must be a song or two about Willie and his adventures. I hope to write one one day ... but I'd reflect his fun and humor, not his loss. Anyway, tall ships always remind me of him, and his story. |
