Subject: Don't ask Eric Bogle to sing... From: GUEST,late 'n short Date: 22 Jul 00 - 12:58 AM Need some advice, folks. I'm going to listen to Eric Bogle tomorrow night, actually later today now that I look at the clock, and in light of some of the info I've picked up from other threads re: unfavorite session songs, I'm wondering if there's any of Eric's songs I should stay away from requesting (presuming he'll take requests that is). Some of my favorites are "If Wishes Were Fishes", "Scraps of Paper", "Now I'm Easy", "Safe in the Harbour" but I can appreciate that, as enjoyble as it would be for me to hear them sung in person, they may be tedious to him. Any suggestions? Dan |

Subject: RE: Don't ask Eric Bogle to sing... From: Bugsy Date: 22 Jul 00 - 02:21 AM Go for it. If he remembers the song or has done it with his current lineup, I'm sure he'll sing whatever he get's asked for. Hope you enjoy the show, and watch out for the magic Mouth synthesizer! Cheers bugsy |
Subject: RE: Don't ask Eric Bogle to sing... From: Callie Date: 22 Jul 00 - 04:47 AM What about "I Just Won't Sing Any Bob Dylan"? Request THAT one - it's funny! |
Subject: RE: Don't ask Eric Bogle to sing... From: bflat Date: 22 Jul 00 - 07:01 AM Dan, See you there possibly. I like "Somewhere In America" It seems to me that he works from his playlist and doesn't deviate. I don't recall when I saw him last that he takes requests. bflat |
Subject: RE: Don't ask Eric Bogle to sing... From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 22 Jul 00 - 12:31 PM Just one thing - the song lots of people call Willia McBride or The Grenn Fields of France - Eric sticks to his own given title, it's "No Man's Land".
And I think bflat is right, he'll know what he's going to sing. |

Subject: RE: Don't ask Eric Bogle to sing... From: bflat Date: 22 Jul 00 - 11:49 PM Just got in from his concert in Paramus, NJ. He was terrific; in good voice; good humor and relaxed. Given that he has been on tour for a month and three more ahead before retuning home to Australia, he was most personable with the audience. His band is very fine and greatly talented. I was satisfied to hear "Somewhere In America" given that I didn't request it and it was my personal hope that it would be included. He had the audience laughing and singing along. I know of one or two requests that he mentioned from the stage which he performed. So. I'd say he was accomodating. He's got a wealth of songs which he's written so it's surely difficult to please everyone. Wish the evening hadn't ended. bflat |
Subject: RE: Don't ask Eric Bogle to sing... From: winniemih Date: 23 Jul 00 - 08:05 AM i heard Eric and the band at the Kate Wolf festival in California, late June. They were fantastic, great energy emanated from them all. They did a song about a man condemned to die in a South African prison, I think it was called Singing his Spirit Home, that was remarkable. Do request it if you get the chance. |

Subject: RE: Don't ask Eric Bogle to sing... From: GUEST,late 'n short Date: 24 Jul 00 - 10:21 PM I only became a fan of Eric's about ten or twelve years ago quite by accident. At a Clancy Brother's performance, Tommy Clancy sang "No Man's Land" and Paula McHugh of Northeast Winds (the openers) sang "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda". I'd heard both songs before but never sung so powerfully. It wasn't til I read the liner notes on the tapes I bought that night that I discovered that Eric had written both songs. I began to hunt down his recordings and after listening to more of his music hoped that some day I'd get to see him in person and realized that hope last Saturday night. He didn't sing all the songs I wanted to hear but it didn't matter; he just gave me more to add to my list of favorites. The small venue made it even more enjoyable. I had the chance to talk with Eric and David O'Neill (the fiddle, mandolin, guitar etc. player) after the concert and that just added to the enjoyment of the evening for me. |

Subject: RE: Don't ask Eric Bogle to sing... From: GUEST,Roger in Baltimore Date: 28 Jul 00 - 04:02 PM I had the pleasure of seeing Eric for the first time last night here in Carroll County. I had never heard him sing, but he has been referenced here so often on the 'Cat I felt I had to see him. I truly enjoyed him. He also had a fine three piece band, primarily keyboard, fiddle, and percussion. Thanks to all you Mudcatters who said nice things about him. Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: RE: Don't ask Eric Bogle to sing... From: Wotcha Date: 28 Jul 00 - 04:20 PM I saw Eric Bogle at Chicago's Abbey Pub (after 4 days in the city). A rather disappointing turn out for such a city I thought, but that just meant I got a great seat. Any other Mudcatter's there that night? And where is there a local song circle in the downtown area?? The Irish Mill Pub in Mundelein has been my venue the past 2 weeks (at least "Fathom the Bowl" and "All for me Grog" went down well with the local rugby team ...) way too far for this city dweller. Cheers, Brian |
Subject: RE: Don't ask Eric Bogle to sing... From: GUEST,Alex Date: 29 Jul 00 - 12:05 AM I was at the Abbey show, too. Eric had a lot of new songs - he really is back on form with his writing. What a great song "Jimmy Dancer" is - Eric at his supreme best writing about his mother (Nancy) having cancer. Great backing band, great night. But, as you said, Brian - a disappointing turnout. Eric said he's not sure how long he can continue to use Chicago as a tax writeoff. I must have met you at some time - The Irish Mill is my local watering hole. |
Subject: RE: Don't ask Eric Bogle to sing... From: Little Hawk Date: 30 Jul 00 - 12:06 AM You have simply got to hear Eric Bogle sing "He's Nobody's Moggie Now". It's a song about a dead cat. It's sidesplittingly funny. He wrote it after a friend dared him to...they were trying to find subjects that it was difficult to write a song about. Believe me, it's one of the funniest songs in history, so request it without hesitation. "Plastic Paddy" is also very funny. It's about tacky Irish bands that play utterly predictable and banal stuff you've already heard 8800 times in your local Irish pub. Watch for Eric's lead guitar player. The guy is just about superhuman...the best acoustic guitar playing I've ever seen. Little Hawk (George Coventry) |
Subject: RE: Don't ask Eric Bogle to sing... From: bflat Date: 30 Jul 00 - 11:13 PM Little Hawk, Eric's lead guitar player is David O'Neill. He is indeed very good. Loved the moggie song, good fun. Very clever lyrics. Don't believe it is recorded. Does anyone know? bflat |
Subject: RE: Don't ask Eric Bogle to sing... From: GUEST,Roger in Baltimore Date: 31 Jul 00 - 07:09 PM Mogie is on Eric's "By Request" CD I believe. I'm not at home so I can't be sure, but it is definitely recorded. I haven't given it a listen, yet, but I suspect it captures only one version. I would bet it changes a bit from night to night. Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: RE: Don't ask Eric Bogle to sing... From: GUEST Date: 05 Aug 00 - 04:16 PM "He's Nobody"s Moggie Now" is also on the "Scraps of Paper" CD -- same version as on "Requests". When I heard Eric and "The Boys" do it in person they did it in a jazzy/blues '20s style that was great. Some cat people present however, were offended. Dan |
