Subject: Computer-related - disabling content ad.

I will be eternally grateful if any of you can tell me if it is safe, and even possible, to totally remove the security content advisor from my hard drive.

I use IE and it seems as soon as I disable the content advisor through the usual channels, i.e. Tools, Internet Options, etc., as soon as I call up the Mudcat or even my ISP home page, the damn thing pops up.

I've reset the levels to allow everything and it still pops up with the warning. So, I go in and disable it again. I don't know how or why it is resetting itself to enable. Can you tell I am frustrated?! :-)

Anyway, I am ready to delete it from the hard drive but don't want to muck up the rest of the damn browser. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

kat

Kat, maybe you have to disable the Content Advisor, close IE and restart it to have the changes take effect? I'd be worried about removing it, but if you can do it through Control Panel, it shouldn't mess anything up. (Least I think it shouldn't.)

It might be worth going to Add and Remove Programmes, taking out IE, then reloading it from a CDROM.

I had this problem at one time - it kept on refusing to let me look at any sites that weren't on its approved list, including my own website, which is a pretty innocuous afair. But then I had to reinstall everything because the hard disk crashed, and it works fine now.

I don't think so, Jeri, with the "Okay" and "Apply" buttons, plus when I do disable it, I get an "Are you sure" box, wanting to know if I've lost my freaking mind and really, really want to see all the nasties available on the Internet.

When I pop it up on the Control Panel, it just comes up with the same thing I get under Tools, Internet Options, etc. If I go to the C drive and look around at Programs and IE, I cannot tell which file has it in it. Aaarrrggghhh!! Next time I am having one custom built!

Thanks, anyway....not sure if there is a solution.

Thanks, Kevin, we cross-posted. If all else fails I will try that, but it would be the older version which I have on CDROM, so hope I can do without. Maybe though I should reload the newer version from the web and see if that helps. Thanks, again, both of you.

What I would do is call the support number for my ISP and ask for their help. I've had a lot of good service (over a period of time) from the friendly folks at Ameritech.Net and Prodigy.Net. If you're on AOL, rots a ruck!!

Well, I use Netscape, and that's only ONE of the reasons why.

At work though, our staff pc is usually on IE, and when this problem pops up we have shut down and re-start. Every. Single. Time.

Bleah.

Today I spent 2 1/2 hours on the phone with tech support fixing lots of things- including her having to delete 870 messages duplicated on a mailbox that I didn't even realize I had! One of my irritants was that the Security Warning popped up every time I tried to open my mail.

She walked me through it and we disabled the sucker. I'd call my Support.

As a last resort, I may Ebbie. I have not been impressed with my Support, esp. the time I called them about my email going wacko and the kid not knowing as much about it as I did!

I think I will uninstall IE and reinstall it and see if that helps. Thanks very much, everyone. I do appreciate it.
