Help: Car CDs/stereos - trunk or dashboard

Subject: Car CDs/stereos - trunk or dashboard

Does it still matter where your CDs are? Back in the olden days, I was told that you wanted the CD player in the trunk because it would skip less. Nowadays, I hear that the skipping issue is moot, new technology prevents the skipping anyway (I think by playing a little behind where it really is, or something). Anyway, now that I have a car worthy of putting a CD player in, it seems as if all the indash ones eliminate cassette players, so I have a reason to have it in the trunk from that point of view - but what about from the technical point? Does it really matter?

It's simple where I live...

If you want to keep it.. Hide it in the boot.

Or they definately don't last a minute, but then neither will the windows, doors etc, etc.

Yep Ella....know that one!!
Mrrzy....my cousin drives a taxi in Belfast and he has a cassette player in the dashboard and his cd player in the boot/trunk.
He has one of those fold down arm rest things in the middle of the back seat so you can access the cd player from inside the car. Don't know about all the electrical bits but I know when I borrow his car I only have to press one button to change the controls from tape to cd and back again on the dashboard.

From the skipping point of view the trunk/boot would be a poor place to put it as it would be directly over the rear axle. Best position would be at the midpoint between the axles and in the centre of the car (point with least up and down movement). However, from a security point of view this position would be foolish. Trust to the anti-skip electronics being good enough and mount it in the trunk.

Aha, so it's a safety/anti-theft thing. Here in Central VA, luckily, I don't worry too much about it... And Troll, don't worry, I am against noise pollution in general, myself.

I changed vehicles in June. My last one had an in-dash CD, the new one has a trunk mounted one. I would never get a trunk mount again. I had no skipping problems with either, but I do an awful lot of driving and I listen to many types of music. I just found it a lot more convenient to be able to change CD's whenever you want instead of having to pull over and reload the trunk mount unit. Also, the cover of my trunk mount unit is already broken. I use my trunk a lot (two kids in Minor Hockey, both goalies) and I find that sometimes I wish I had a little more room in the trunk.
