Subject: Add: Songs of the Louvin Brothers From: wysiwyg Date: 03 Jun 14 - 04:21 PM HE CAN BE FOUND By Ella Barrett and Faye Cunningham. Learned from the singing of The Louvin Brothers on "Satan Is Real." Adapted, edited, arranged, verses 3, 4, 5 © 5/10/14 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Barb Perkins. 1. He can be found in a mother's smile; He can be found in the eyes of a child. He can be found, He is everywhere; When we kneel in prayer each plea He hears. REFRAIN: He can be found in the air that we breathe He always hears a heart that grieves. He can be found on life's stormy sea-- He can be found in you and me. 2. He can be found in the hearts of great men; He will reach down for one who has sinned. The poorest child, and the rich man's son-- All who believe, and who will let Him come. 3. He can be found in Black and White; He can be found in colors, all bright. He's not hiding-- for He made us all; He can be found when we hear His call. 4. He can be found in young and old; He can be found in warm and in cold. In that moment when any life starts, He can be found in each beating heart. 5. He can be found at our last breath-- If we accept Him before earthly death. He can be found in the family's farewell, With trusting love, His story they tell. Subject: Lyr Add: SATAN AND THE SAINT (Louvin Brothers) From: Jim Dixon Date: 21 Aug 11 - 02:08 PM I got most of the words, anyway, by listening to YouTube: SATAN AND THE SAINT As sung by the Louvin Brothers "I have the world to offer you." Yes, you have the world to hold Till the day when God declares Time on earth shall be no more. Fire and brimstone shall rain down enveloped(?) like the snow. What will you have to offer then to a dying soul? "But think of all you're giving up." I'm giving up the chance to die And spend eternity in Hell Burning in a lake of fire, I thank God who's made a way that I might escape. By the living grace of God, I shall see his face, "You don't sin; you're good enough." There's not a just man upon earth That doeth good and sinneth not. All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned ev'ry one to his own way, And the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. "But ...(?) will be too dull for you." Ev'rything you offered me Don't mean nothin' to my heart. Far from sin, I've been set free. Praise the lord; I'm going home, ever to rejoice. Take the world and get behind. I have found a peace of mind. Everlasting joy is mine. Jesus is my joy. |

Subject: Lyr Add: PREACH THE GOSPEL (Louvin Brothers) From: Jim Dixon Date: 26 Jul 10 - 12:45 AM You can hear this at YouTube. There is still a gap in verse 2 where I couldn't decipher the lyrics: PREACH THE GOSPEL Louvin Brothers CHORUS: Preach (preach), preach (preach), preach the gospel. Trust God. He'll give you words to say. Preach (preach), preach (preach), preach the gospel. Regardless who it hurts, pray that God will have His way. 1. I can't enjoy my Bible just readin' here and there. I like to take it as it comes and never skip a line. No need to read the verses that say you'll enter in. If you don't like the one that reads, you must be born again. 2. I fear we have some preachers, well thought of in their church, Who change the text God chose for them, afraid of who they'll hurt. They'd like to pick the scripture that ... soul, Afraid they'll lose their job if they get on the members' toes. 3. Back yonder sets a member, the preacher tells himself, He's never missed a service since I've been the pastor here. I'm led to mention whiskey, of how it dims your soul, But since he drinks a little, I'd be gettin' on his toes. |

The Louvin Brothers really did record a song called DON'T LET THEM TAKE THE BIBLE OUT OF OUR SCHOOLROOMS, in 1962. It was written by George David McGraw, and it is in the Bear Family 8-CD set "Close Harmony" (1992). It was also recorded by David Mansfield on "Ever Call Ready" (1978, reissued 1985). It is in the DT under the slightly different title DON'T LET THEM TAKE THE BIBLE FROM OUR SCHOOLROOMS. |

Subject: Lyr Add: LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS THYSELF (Louvin) From: Bluegrassman Date: 09 Oct 09 - 07:58 PM Guest, why don't you join us, here are the lyrics you requested. LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS THYSELF Ira & Charlie Louvin, (Loudermilk) 1955 CHORUS: Love thy neighbor as thyself. Do unto him as you'd have him do to you. Give him things that you can do without to help him live. Love thy neighbor as thyself and he will love you too. Now, this old world could be a lonesome place without a friend. We need each other every day. Together we can win. There's a little good in every man. Don't count and see his faults. And a precious deed that you might do may change his inward thoughts. CHORUS Well, I once knew a couple of fellers near my old homestead. And I just wish that all the world could live the way they did. They'd swap off work and lend each other money, mules, and plows. And I've seen 'em many a time dividing milk from one old cow. CHORUS We need old timey neighborhoods, with hearts that's free of greed. God make us good old fashioned folks who'll be a friend indeed. If you want a friend, then be a friend. Do not let charity slack. Do your deeds without a price, someone will pay you back. CHORUS |

Subject: Lyr Add: I CAN'T KEEP YOU IN LOVE WITH ME (Louvin) From: TonyA Date: 26 May 09 - 09:55 PM It must have been an awful hurt that someone did to you That built a wall around your heart that I can't break through. I can't erase, I can't replace the bitter with the sweet, For I can't find my way behind your wall of memories. refrain: If you want me, why can't I keep you in love with me? You say you're mine; and I'm not blind, I know you want to be. And when you're holding me, no sweeter love could ever be. But when I'm gone, somehow I can't keep you in love with me. The worst mistake that you could make, the surest way to lose, Would be to listen and believe the lies they tell to you. There is a way you can repay the one who let you down: Let me repair your broken heart, don't leave it on the ground. (refrain) |
Subject: Lyr Add: MUST YOU THROW DIRT IN MY FACE (Louvin) From: TonyA Date: 26 May 09 - 09:52 PM What is it that brings you to this part of town, Curiosity, conscience, or fate? I know it's not love, for I once gave you love, And all you gave me was the gate. I've a feeling you've come back to just rub it in, And really put me in my place. refrain: You've already put big old tears in my eyes. Must you throw dirt in my face? Must you keep telling me you've got a new love? I don't need you to remind me. Must you keep telling me I look so lonesome, And my better days are behind me? Must you keep showing me pictures of him, And boasting of his warm embrace? (refrain) You've already left me and broken my heart, And told me how much you don't want me. Believe me I'm happier when we're apart. Why must you come back now and haunt me? Must you keep showing me pictures of him, And boasting of his warm embrace? (refrain) |

I don't know what made me lie to you Most of all I just don't know why I cheated on you Give me the chance that I'd give you Give this message to your heart. It's hard to ask you to forgive For you have more than done your part But if you don't then I can't live Give this message to your heart. I don't know what made me lie to you Most of all I just don't know why I cheated on you Give me the chance that I'd give you Give this message to your heart. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Songs of the Louvin Brothers From: Jim Dixon Date: 03 Apr 05 - 12:14 PM For I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT, the best I can do is a partial transcription based on several sound samples: ...crowd passes by. Some are talking 'bout their wealth and their riches. Some are talking 'bout their troubles and strife. I don't know how to talk like a rich man. When compared, I'm a beggar no doubt. If you're talking about that old-time religion, Then I know what you're talking about. If you're talking about that old-time religion, Then I know what you're talking about: 'Bout the kind that will make you love your neighbor When old Satan would say, "Turn him out;" 'Bout the kind that will comfort you in sorrow, And it never fails to make you shout. Well, if you're talking about that old-time religion, Then I know what you're talking about. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Songs of the Louvin Brothers From: GUEST,Dale Date: 27 Jan 05 - 10:46 PM This afternoon I finally got around to buying the album mentioned by Jim on 13 Jan 05 - 11:17 PM, "Livin, Lovin, Losin: The Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Universal CD #45802, 2003. Definitely recommended. No clinkers, but it did make me want to go back and hear the originals again. I was listening in the car, so sometimes I could tell and sometimes I couldn't tell who was singing, but the one that pulled me up short and made me look was #9 featuring Kathy Louvin, a much older recording from 1988. Somehow it had a slightly better feel to it. Knowing who it was explained it all for me. 1. Introduction to Ira and Charlie Louvin 2. Cash On The Barrelhead - Joe Nichols/Rhonda Vincent 3. My Baby's Gone - Emmylou Harris/Rodney Crowell 4. How's The World Treating You - James Taylor/Alison Krauss 5. I Can't Keep You In Love With Me - Vince Gill/Terri Clark 6. Must You Throw Dirt In My Face - Merle Haggard/Carl Jackson 7. If I Could Only Win Your Love - Ronnie Dunn/Rebecca Lynn Howard 8. When I Stop Dreaming - Glen Campbell/Leslie Satcher 9. I Wish You Knew - Kathy Louvin/Pamela Brown Hayes 10. New Partner's Waltz - Linda Ronstadt/Carl Jackson 11. Are You Teasing Me - Patty Loveless/Jon Randall 12. I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby - Harley Allan/Dierks Bentley 13. You're Running Wild - Larry Cordle/Carl Jackson/Jerry Salley 14. The Angels Rejoiced - Dolly Parton/Sonya Isaacs 15. Let Us Travel, Travel On - Marty Stuart/Del McCoury 16. Keep Your Eyes On Jesus - Pam Tillis/Johnny Cash with the Jordanaires |

Subject: Lyr Add: HOW'S THE WORLD TREATING YOU From: Jim Dixon Date: 13 Jan 05 - 11:17 PM HOW'S THE WORLD TREATING YOU (Chet Atkins, Boudleaux Bryant) I've had nothing but sorrow Since you said we were through. There's no hope for tomorrow. How's the world treating you? Ev'ry sweet thing that mattered Has been broken in two. All my dreams have been shattered. How's the world treating you? Got no plans for next Sunday. Got no plans for today. Ev'ry day is Blue Monday, Ev'ry day you're away. Though our pathways have parted, To your mem'ry I'm true. Guess I'll stay broken-hearted. How's the world treating you? Do you wonder about me Like I'm hoping you do? Are you lonesome without me? Have you found someone new? Are you burning and yearning? Do you ever get blue? Do you think of returning? How's the world treating you? Do you think of returning? How's the world treating you? [As sung by James Taylor and Alison Krauss on "Livin, Lovin, Losin: The Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Universal CD #45802, 2003. Also recorded by Eddy Arnold, Chet Atkins, Don Gibson, Sonny James, The Louvin Brothers, Helen Merrill, The Osborne Brothers, Elvis Presley, Jim Reeves, and several others.] |

Subject: Lyr Add: FOOLIN' AROUND (Buck Owens) From: Sorcha Date: 07 Apr 02 - 04:05 PM Somebody requesting this said it was by the Louvins, so I'll add it. If it's not, someone can correct me....... FOOLIN' AROUND I know that you've been foolin' around on me right from the start So I'll give back your ring and I'll take back my heart And when you're tire of foolin' around with two or three Just come on home and fool around with me. Then come on home and fool around with me. Well I wasn't foolin' around the day I said I do But many a night I wished that I had been a-foolin' too I know it's foolish taking all this misery But when it's you a fool I'll always be So honey fool around. You know right where I'm at And don't worry if I'm lonesome cause I'm used to that And when you're tire of foolin' around with two or three Then come on home and fool around with me I know that you've been foolin' around on me right from the start So I'll give back your ring and I'll take back my heart And when you're tire of foolin' round with two or three Just come on home and fool around with me. |

Subject: Add: HE WAS WAITING AT THE ALTAR From: wysiwyg Date: 04 Apr 02 - 10:25 AM Hear it HERE. ~Susan HE WAS WAITING AT THE ALTAR As Recorded by the Louvin Brothers He was waiting at the altar When I knelt there, He lifted me. When I trusted in Him it was over, And my sin-sick soul He set free. I had searched everywhere but could not find Him Till I said, "Precious Lord, have Thy way!" When I opened my heart, I felt His blood rushing in! He was waiting at the altar, for me! I was wandering aimless, I had searched far and wide But I failed to find peace for my soul. Like a lost weary traveler, then, I sat down and cried For my burdens were too great a load. Full of pride, and conceited, I was lost and astray Till I laid down my soul at His feet. I found Christ was the answer, and He met me halfway— He was waiting at the altar, for me!

Subject: Add: FAMILY WHO PRAYS 2 From: wysiwyg Date: 12 Mar 02 - 03:50 PM Thanks, Michael! Here is the version of FAMILY WHO PRAYS we will use in our church. I shifted the emphasis just slightly to make it about the whole family of God, in heaven, and the truth that in life, nothing can really separate us from the love of God. ~Susan ===================================================

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Songs of the Louvin Brothers From: GUEST,michael batory Date: 12 Mar 02 - 04:54 AM My band The James Boys recorded a version of "Knoxville Girl" for (The Legendary) Joe Meek, back in the 60s. However it was never released because it was too "Violent" and "would't get any airplay". Strange really because "Banks of the Ohio" (similar story) was freely available and being played. Joe would never give dubs from his sessions so I do not have a copy of it, however, there is a copy somewhere amongst the infamous Tea Chest Tapes so maybe it will come to light one day. This is really of no consequence but I thought that there may be a Louvin Brothers archivist who would be interested in the info. michael.batory@bcuc.ac.uk |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Songs of the Louvin Brothers From: wysiwyg Date: 11 Mar 02 - 12:17 PM I guess what I hope folks remember is that while the historical correctness of the song is important, I'm not "performing" these-- I'm putting them right into the worship service of a hierarchical denomination that thinks carefully about everything. So for our Saturday Night Service, I am responsible for making a concert song into a worship song. Sometimes that means a shift in theology, sometimes an extension of themes into our daily lives, etc. I was affirmed in this recently by a Baptist minister who is taking a bit of a break from active ministry to re-evaluate some things and who is worshipping with us on Saturday nights for a time. He said that in the churches that have gone all "praise" music, and also are not credal-- meaning in that context their worship does not include a recitation of a specific creed-- the music is all that's left to keep it all from making the overall message "too human." So in addition to my own care about that, and my husband's authority to give or deny the OK to use a piece in our services, apparently the congregation is keeping a closer eye than I thought, too. Take that "FAMILY WHO PRAYS" item above-- there are going to be a lot of people in our denomination who are going to hear one of those verses as a condemnation of a divorce they were forced into when someone left, and a hopelessness about their now-smaller family. Even though that is probably not the main point the Louvin's were trying to make in that verse, it will get in the way and cause some inadvertent pain. I may take that verse out and write something else when we do it. ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Songs of the Louvin Brothers From: Jim Dixon Date: 11 Mar 02 - 12:08 PM Susan: I agree that "weariness" is fitting. Who cares how the Louvin Brothers sang it? I say, if you can figure out a way to improve a song, go for it! In performance, that is. In a songbook, or in DigiTrad, I still like to have the original version documented, if possible. Improvements can be suggested in footnotes. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Songs of the Louvin Brothers From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Feb 02 - 07:24 PM This site says the line is "There's no weary one in heaven." I listened to the sound file you indicated, and it sounds to me like "weary ones." Also, verse 3, line 3 sounds like "Will your soul be freed from sorrow." Other than that, I think you nailed it. |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE ANGELS REJOICED LAST NIGHT^^ From: Lonesome EJ Date: 29 Oct 00 - 08:37 PM The Angels Rejoiced Last Night A house, not a home, was the picture Satan painted For sweet little sister and me Our Daddy would frown while Mother was praying His heart was so hardened that he would not believe In anger he'd swear, his voice cold and loud His Sundays were spent out with the gambling crowd I'd never seen my Daddy inside the House of God For Satan held his hand, down the path of sin he trod Not long ago, our circle was broken When God called on Mother one night In a voice sweet and low, her last words were spoken Asking our Daddy to raise her children right The Angels rejoiced in Heaven last night I heard my Daddy pray "Dear God, Make it right" He was smiling and singing with tears in his eyes While Mother with the Angels rejoiced last night While Mother with the Angels rejoiced last night. Subject: Lyr Add: I DON'T BELIEVE YOU'VE MET MY BABY^^ From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 Oct 00 - 06:55 PM I DON'T BELIEVE YOU'VE MET MY BABY (Autry Inman/Tree Publishing Co., Inc., BMI, 1956) Last night, my dear, the rain was falling. I went to bed so sad and blue. Then I had a dream of you. I dreamed I was strolling in the evening underneath the harvest moon. I was thinking about you. And then you met me in the moonlight. The stars were shining in your eyes. But another was there too. "I don't believe you've met my baby." You looked at him. You looked at me. I wondered who you were talking to. I shook the hand of your stranger but I was shakin' more inside. I was still a-wond'rin' who. Your arm was restin' on his shoulder. You smiled at him. He smiled at you. His eyes were filled with victory. He said, "My sister wants to marry," and then my heart was filled with ease. I knew that you would marry me. [As performed by Hugh Moffatt & Katy Moffatt on "Dance Me Outside," Philo 1144 (1992) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD] |
Subject: Lyr Add: WHEN I STOP DREAMING^^ From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 Oct 00 - 06:54 PM WHEN I STOP DREAMING (Charlie & Ira Louvin/Acuff-Rose, BMI, 1955) The worst that I've ever been hurt in my life, The first time I ever wanted to die, Was the night when you told me you loved someone else, And asked me if I could forget. (Cho.:) When I stop dreaming, that's when I'll stop loving you. I'd be like a flower unwanted in spring, Alone and neglected, transplanted in vain To a garden of sadness where its petals will fall In the shadow of undying pain. (Cho.) You can teach the flowers to bloom in the snow. You may take a pebble and teach it to grow. You can teach all the raindrops to return to the cloud, But you can't teach my heart to forget. (Cho. twice) [As performed by Del McCoury & the Dixie Pals on "High on a Mountain," Rounder 0019 (1972) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD] |
Subject: Lyr Add: MY BABY CAME BACK^^ From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 Oct 00 - 06:52 PM MY BABY CAME BACK (Ira & Charlie Louvin/Acuff-Rose, BMI, 1958) My baby got tired of a new love. My baby came back to a true love, And now my heart is beating with ease. My love, my kiss is able to please. (Cho.:) My baby is loving me better. My baby is sweeter than ever. No more sleepless nights alone and so black. My sweetheart, my baby came back. Some lose at love and they never love again. I'm tasting love that I thought I'd never win. I thought my heart would take the wrong track. I'm glad that I waited. My baby came back. (Cho.) (Repeat 2nd verse, 1st verse, and chorus) [An answer song to the Louvins' "My Baby's Gone." As performed by Laurie Lewis & Tom Rozum on "The Oak and the Laurel," Rounder 0340 (1995) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD] |
Subject: Lyr Add: HERE TODAY AND GONE TOMORROW^^ From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 Oct 00 - 06:51 PM HERE TODAY AND GONE TOMORROW (Jim & Maxine Brown/Jamie Music, BMI) Here today and gone tomorrow, Our love will always be a hit-and-run affair. I know you love me, but you're just a wand'rer. Today I love you but tomorrow I may not care. (Cho.:) For absence never makes the heart grow fonder. I get lonesome for someone's company. Here today and gone tomorrow, And my loving you is just a fantasy. When you're gone I'll wish we'd never met, For your memory remains within my heart. Here today and gone tomorrow, We can't be happy, so I guess it's best we part. (Cho.) [As performed by Hazel Dickens with the Johnson Mountain Boys on "The Sweat of My Brow," Rounder 0200 (1983) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD] |
Subject: Lyr Add: LOVE AND WEALTH^^ From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 Oct 00 - 06:50 PM LOVE AND WEALTH (Ira & Charlie Louvin/Acuff-Rose, BMI) Darling, I'm all alone in a little mountain home. It's lonely cold and loveless now inside, For your childish vows of love lasted only one short year, Then you went away to be another's bride. (Cho.:) You will never know the pain that I felt when you left. Should you ever wed again, let me wish you love and wealth. Now that same old whippoorwill breaks the silence on the hill, As I stand and gaze upon that faded wall Where your picture used to hang in a little golden frame, And the image of your smile I still recall. (Cho. twice) [As performed by Here Today on "Here Today," Rounder 0169 (1982) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD] |
Subject: Lyr Add: YOU'RE RUNNING WILD^^ From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 Oct 00 - 06:49 PM YOU'RE RUNNING WILD (Ray Edenten & Don Winters/Acuff-Rose, BMI, 1956) You're running wild. How long can this go on? You're leaving me alone and running wild. You're always gone. My love you'll never share. It's more than I can bear. You're running wild. You'll settle down some day and find I've gone away. You'll think of what you've done while running wild. I can't go on. You'll have to choose the way. You'll have to go or stay. Stop running wild. (Repeat 2nd verse) [As performed by Joe Val & the New England Bluegrass Boys on "Cold Wind," Rounder 0182 (1983) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD] |
Subject: Lyr Add: I'M GONNA LOVE YOU ONE MORE TIME^^ From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 Oct 00 - 06:48 PM I'M GONNA LOVE YOU ONE MORE TIME (Ira & Charlie Louvin/Acuff-Rose, BMI) Oh, I've just read the letter you wrote me, And these tear stains you cannot deny. I can see that you're tired of your new love, So I'll answer in just a few lines. (Cho.:) I'm gonna love you one more time, And give you a chance to be true. If you leave me again, we'll no longer be friends, For I'm tired of playing hide-and-seek with you. After searching this wide world all over, I'm surprised to have found you again. I had made up my mind to forget you, But my heart was too broken to mend. Once you hid in the arms of another, But now you are trying to please. From the cold empty world that he left you, You are ready to come back to me. [As performed by Jim and Jesse and the Virginia Boys on "In the Tradition," Rounder 0234 (1987) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD] |
Subject: Lyr Add: SEVEN YEAR BLUES^^ From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 Oct 00 - 06:47 PM SEVEN YEAR BLUES (Eddie Hill, Charlie Louvin & Ira Louvin /Acuff-Rose, BMI, 1949) Just seven years ago today was when you said goodbye. It broke my heart to see you go and yet I could not cry. You kissed me sweet and said goodbye but I could not believe That you would ever make me cry unwanted and to grieve. The sun is slowly sinking down to mark the close of day, To mark the end of seven years, the ending of my way. I have no one to stand by me to count these bitter tears. I could never live these awful blues another seven years. I've waited seven years today to see your face once more. And if our life could be as one, I'd wait ten thousand more. (Repeat verse 3.) [As performed by Longview on Rounder 0386 (1997) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD] |
Subject: Lyr Add: MAKE HIM A SOLDIER^^ From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 Oct 00 - 06:46 PM MAKE HIM A SOLDIER (Charlie & Ira Louvin/Acuff-Rose, BMI) Listen to the gentle call. There is work for one and all. Join in the fight. Walk in the light. Do whatever you can do, then the Lord will see you through, Tryin' us all to win. (Cho.:) Make him a soldier. Heed now the call. Help win the vict'ry. He died to save us all. Walk along the rocky shore where the mighty ocean roars. Many today are drifting away. Sing aloud of saving grace. Tell the news to ev'ry race. Bid them to anchor in. (Cho.) Do your work and never fret, and the Savior won't forget. Carry the cross. Look for the loss. You must brave the swelling tide if you'd reach the other side. Be a soldier brave. (Cho.) [As performed by the Whitstein Brothers on "Sweet Harmony" Rounder 0344 (1996) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD] |
Subject: Lyr Add: ARE YOU AFRAID TO DIE?^^ From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 Oct 00 - 06:45 PM ARE YOU AFRAID TO DIE? (Ira Louvin, Eddie Hill & Charlie Louvin/Opryland, BMI, 1958) Are you a stranger to God, carried away with your pride? Tell me, sinner, did you ever stop to think, are you afraid to die? Call on Him while He is near. Moments are swift passing by. Will you seek Him while He may be found? Are you afraid to die? (Cho.:) Are you afraid? Are you unsaved? Are you afraid to die? Are you too wicked to cry? Would you to God's bosom fly? Soon He's coming like a thief in the night. Are you afraid to die? (Cho. twice) [As performed by the Nashville Bluegrass Band on "To Be His Child" Rounder 0242 (1987) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD] |
Subject: Lyr Add: WE LIVE IN TWO DIFFERENT WORLDS^^ From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 Oct 00 - 06:44 PM WE LIVE IN TWO DIFFERENT WORLDS (Fred Rose/Milene Music, ASCAP) (Cho.:) We live in two different worlds, dear. That's why we're so far apart. You made a world out of vows that were broken. I've built a world in my heart. Everyone here tried to warn me That you were playin' a game. I told them all we were meant for each other. I thought our worlds were the same. (Cho.) If you stay over in your world, Oh, how my heart it would pine. Darling, some day, when your memories wander, Won't you come over in mine? (Cho.) We live in two different worlds, dear. My world is honest and true. Sweetheart, remember, when your world gets lonely, I'll still be waiting for you. (Cho.) [As performed by Ricky Skaggs on "Family and Friends" Rounder 0151 (1982) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD] |
Subject: Lyr Add: CASH ON THE BARRELHEAD^^ From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 Oct 00 - 06:42 PM CASH ON THE BARRELHEAD (Ira & Charlie Louvin/Acuff-Rose, BMI, 1956) I got in a little trouble at the county seat And they put me in the jailhouse for loafin' on the street. When the judge heard the verdict, he said, "You're guilty, man." He gave me forty-five dollars, thirty days in the can. "That'll be cash on the barrelhead, son, Not part in cash, the entire sum. No money down, no credit plan. Give me cash on the barrelhead. I'm a busy man." I found a telephone number on a laundry slip. I had a good-hearted jailer with a six-gun hip. He let me call long distance. She said, "Number, please." Just as soon as I told her, she shouted back at me, "That'll be cash on the barrelhead, son, Not part in cash, the entire sum. No money down, no credit plan. 'Cause a little bird tells me you're a travelin' man." Thirty days in the jailhouse, four days on the road. I was feelin' mighty hungry, my feet's a heavy load. I saw a Greyhound comin'. I stuck out my thumb. Soon as I was seated, the driver caught my arm. "That'll be cash on the barrelhead, son. This old gray dog gets paid to run. When the engine stops and the wheels don't roll, Give me cash on the barrelhead, I'll take you down the road." [As performed by the Dreadful Snakes on "Snakes Alive!" Rounder 0177 (1995) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD] |
