The Folk Music Index shows this listing:

Take Me Home, Poor Julia
1.Macon, Uncle Dave. Uncle Dave Macon. Early Recordings, County 521, LP (197?), cut# 5

This might help if you want to find the album. That's all I could find using Google.

Here's what I can hear. I have no idea what the river or stream referred to in the first stanza is - sounds like Old PD or Obedee or Opedee. I don't have an atlas of America to even hazard a guess, but no doubt it will be blindingly obvious to someone who knows. Uncle Dave is accompanied by The Fruit Jar Drinkers [Sam & Kirk McGee and Mazy Todd] on this song.

TAKE ME HOME POOR JULIA

Way down on the Opedee ??
Among the cotton and cane
Oh the cabins I could make
And the buildings I could build
On the banks of the Opedee ??

Take me home, poor Julia, take me home
Take me home, poor Julia, take me home
For I have no place for to lay my head
But to lay in poor Julia's arms

One morning when I was a-walking
Oh the sun was just a half an hour high
I travelled through the green grass grow up to my knees
Miss Julia hung her head and she cried

Take me home, poor Julia, take me home
Take me home, poor Julia, take me home
For I have no place for to lay my head
But to lay in poor Julia's arms

Miss Julia and I were sleeping
When death came a-knocking at the door
Miss Julia was a-sleeping by my side
On the banks of the Ohio

Take me home, poor Julia, take me home
Take me home, poor Julia, take me home
For I have no place for to lay my head
But to lay in poor Julia's arms

You may bury me in my coffin
Don't bury so deeply in my grave
Don't make no difference where you bury my body
Gonna rise at the resurrection day

Take me home, poor Julia, take me home
Take me home, poor Julia, take me home
For I have no place for to lay my head
But to lay in poor Julia's arms

guess: the "Opedee" is the old Peedee River, which runs from NW to SE through (IIRC) South Carolina, and is one of the rivers that Sherman's men had to cross, in the dead of winter, as they came north after Marching through Georgia. I don't know the song as well; when I sing it it turns into one of the variants of "free a little bird as I can be". Thanks Stewie

Pete, you are probably spot on - that's definitely what it sounds like. What a curious song this is. Do you know anything about its origins?
