Subject: Uncle Dave Macon Video? From: Nathan Date: 23 Nov 98 - 10:02 AM I've heard that there was a TV special a few years ago with footage of Uncle Dave performing. Does anyone know if there's anything with Uncle Dave available to the general public? Nathan Sarvis Denton, TX |
Subject: RE: Uncle Dave Macon Video? From: northfolk Date: 23 Nov 98 - 11:41 AM I remember seeing a PBS special, that was aired a number of times during fundraising, at least ten years ago. It was a documentary on Uncle Dave, and featured performers that were influenced by him, as well as his influence on the beginnings of the Grand Ole Opry. I don't recall which PBS station produced it, and have no idea if it is in an archive somewhere, or whether it may be available for purchase or loan...but at least this may be a starting point for you. Best wishes. |
Subject: RE: Uncle Dave Macon Video? From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 24 Nov 98 - 06:14 AM I believe it was called "The High Lonesome Sound" and was produced by Mike Seeger. Of course, this may all be fantasy on my part since it is a phantom memory not one of those solid "I know this!" ones. Often your local PBS people will be helpful in tracking donw obscure shows you have seen in the past. They can be as helpful as librarians at times. Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: RE: Uncle Dave Macon Video? From: Zorro Date: 24 Nov 98 - 06:45 AM The special on PBS called the Roots of Country had a clip of Macon and his son. Son's name was pronounced "Doris" I never did know why or his real name. I think the special was 6 hours. For some reason I have 3 tapes that house the whole thing. I'm sure it will air in the future. There is a web site for PBS, you might try. It is, or was www.pbs.org. I know they publish a cataqlog of taped specials for sale... You might just get lucky... Subject: RE: Uncle Dave Macon Video? From: murray@mpce.mq.edu.au Date: 24 Nov 98 - 06:45 AM There was a Hollywood movie called "Grand Ol' Oprey" (or something close) that had footage of him. I don't know if that ever became a video. Roger, there is such a video which traces the development of Bluegrass. I am not sure Uncle Dave is on it. There is a video called "The Greats of Grand Ole Opry--Vol 3" which has Uncle Dave, and the McGee Brothers as well as some newer people. It is in the Country Sales catalogue for $25. Murray |

Subject: RE: Uncle Dave Macon Video? From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 12 Nov 04 - 03:28 PM The Hollywood film of the Grand Old Opry, a clip from which has shown up on one or two Tapes/Programmes has apparently recently been released in full on DVD. But wait, it is only available as part of the box set of Macon's complete works available on Bear Family records out of Germany. It is quite expensive but also includes a hard back book. I haven't succumbed yet but it's probably only time. If you are interested I would suggest that you contact County Sales down in Virginia as they normally stock all the Bear Family releases and masses of other oldtime/country/bluegrass material.Their mail order service is second to none Hope that's of help. |
Subject: RE: Uncle Dave Macon Video? From: Once Famous Date: 12 Nov 04 - 05:35 PM I actually found and have an old original movie poster from the Grand Ole Opry film some years back. I believe it was released in 1941. I have only seen clips from the actual film. |
