I see that they're going to bring back the old Soviet national anthem for Russia. And there's a bit of a fuss about it too.

I'm pretty sure I'd be pleased about it myself, if I was Russian, for all that I think Putin is probably pretty despicable generally. (I'm not completely certain I wouldn't prefer Bush, if I was pushed in a corner...) Far more stirring than the one they used at the Olympics. I felt the old one went very well alongside the Star Spangled Banner.

If the Germans can still use the same tune that Hitler would stand to attention for, I can't see why the tune which the people who beat Hitler and endured Stalin would stand to attention for, shouldn't be welcomed back.

I always liked the Tsar's Anthem, the one that is heard in the 1812 Overture, but then I suppose that opens up another kettle of fish, as well--

From what I understand, they're bringing back the USSR's anthem, and the Tsar's flag. So everyone has something to smile (or grimace) about.

Too many bloody Tsars around these days drugs, transport, crime, probably homework. And I prefer the Czar spelling, to remind us it's the same as Caesar.

Anyway, here is a site with the old Soviet anthem they are bringing back, and here is one for national anthems generally, where you can find the one they've been using the last few years, which is a bit ponderous, and the tune isn't one to stick in the head.

Then wouldn't you like the spelling "Kaiser" event better? I don't like the Czar spelling because it reminds me of that horrible little compact Chrysler that everyone is making such a fuss about-(another good thing about the UK--along with really good cream, and actors who can actually act, and no GWBush))

Actually I think I would prefer it is they did say Kaiser when they make these ridiculous appointments. Tsar orv even Czar gives it all a spurius glamour and importance. Or maybe go back to Caesar. "Blair appoints Little Drugs Caesar" "President names Chads Caesar". Makes them sound like Edward G.Robinson.

Oh, there are plenty of creeps like Bush in UK politics. No, that's not really true - what I mean is, there are plenty of people in UK politics who are just as big creeps as Bush. But nobody says they are "likeable" - which is what I feel bewildered at in relation to Bush Junior. I can imagine how people could vote for him - but "likaeable. But that is thread drift and it belongs on another thread.

It occurred to me, there's now a European Anthem, and there are anthems for other places as big, like the Russian one and the American One and a few more like that. Has anyone yet come up with a credible anthem for Planet Earth in these days of globalisation and prognostications about global disaster?

Well, actually it's globaliZation, not globaliSation, truth to tell. (Kidding.)

I've always preferred the old Red Army Marching Song (Polyushko, polye-dy) over any of the Soviet post-Internationale anthems. Does the Russian army still use it, or did it go the way of all things red?

One of the lines in the Russian version of "Joy to the World" (Raduysya mir, gospod' gryadyot) goes "Tsarya Tsaryey" which I'm pretty sure is the functional equivalent of "King of kings", not "Czar of czars".

Liland
