Subject: CarolC's Canadian Adventure From: CarolC Date: 23 Jan 01 - 01:38 AM On Saturday, January 27, I expect to arrive in The fair city of Orillia, Ontario, to be officially installed as honorary citizen and recieve my honorary McGill key. (I'll start putting u's in words like honorary after I get there.) As official keeper of the McGill key, flattop will be my host during my visit. The length of my visit is, at this time, open ended, but could last as long as four weeks. I hope to be able to meet as many Canadian Mudcatters as possible during my visit. Hope to see you there! The big thing in Lake Simcoe this time of year is ice fishing for smelt. There's also a big gambling joint (Casino Rama) just on the south side of the lake. A couple of years ago formerly unusual weather stranded hundreds of ice fishers out in the lake...so its starting to look like that's another form of gambling. Spaw is just jealous because whatever Orillia may or may not have to offer, it's just a short drive from Toronto, and he longs after the big city experience but has never been to one. Maybe you can talk Flattop into an excursion to Ottawa for Winterlude--do you skate? (A five mile section of The Rideau Canal is made into the world's longest skating rink every winter and there's this big party...it's more civilized than what goes on on Lake Simcoe.) Perhaps we could rename it after the Indian word for laughing lake until Spaw comes up for a winter month, then we'd have to name it back to Couchiching. The good news is that Carol is indeed coming up for a McGill pilgramage or a McGillgramage. The bad new is that the timing is not as great as Sophocleese thought. Carol's train will arrive about two hours after Orillia Folk Society's Winterfolk at Blackberry Hill Farm ends. This is worse news than you might expect. We don't have a lot of winter events so, believe it or not, we might have to make up a few non-events. Shophy is a world class singer. She also read music, writes songs, and plays guitar, bodhron, recorder and rhythm things attached to her ankles. She and her musical partner Terry (who is president of the Orillia Folk Society), play great music. I may catch their act, Brookes and Cooper, at Winterfolk before heading down to meet Carol's train. When Carol arrives we will have to nominate her for Ms McGill 2001. For those who don't read long rambling Don't Post threads, McGill Environmental is an Orillia company that rents beautifil blue plastic toilets to events like folk festivals. To advertise, they attached one of their toilets with a stuffed man in it on the back of Rombo's restaurant. Carol claims to have written the first limerick about our McGills. I can't find it even when I supersearch. The 'Don't Post' threads are such a mess. Her limerick should put her in a good spot with McGill's totally biased judges. I trust mudcatteers will be proud if Carol becomes Ms McGill 2001. Banjer wrote the second McGill limerick. He might have a good chance of winning Ms McGill 2002. And yes, Spaw has a good point. You can visit most of Orillia's tourist sites in under 40 minutes. It shouldn't take four weeks but Carol needs more time. To win the title of Ms McGill, one must sit on a winter cold McGill and meditate. The longer a contestant sits the more likely that they will be picked a winners. Former winners have had tough exteriors. Carol wrote that she would like to meet Canadian mudcatters on her visit. We should be able to get easily together with Toronto mudcattters. Clinton, you might split the drive and meet us at a Toronto gathering. I'm thinking of asking Jim if we can have a party at the Newmarket Corner Coffeeshop. It's just up the 404 from Rick's house. Ottawa and Godderich are a fair distance but eating hot Beaver Tails on the Rideau might be tempting. I'll write more about get togethers later. Today's a very bad day for writing. The "big city" was only 10 miles away and had a population of about 8,000. I don't know what the population of Bath, Maine, is but we have three stop lights. All in the same intersection. |

That could actually keep you engrossed for at least 4 more days. Then there are the McGill's that are scattered around town. They may all look similar from the outside...but inside it's a different story! I'm not gonna spoil it for you by going into details on that one. Ummm...we do have a whole bunch of Tim Horton's donut shops here, eh? After all, this is Canada, eh? Geez, I'm starting to sound like Blind Drunk in Blind River. There are a fair number of guys around here like him. They gather once a month when the welfare checks come out and infest the local bars...like "The Booze Anchor". I am quite content to live in a tiny village which has no illusions. We have only a dozen streets, mainly still brick, and not even one traffic light. We have no restaurant, no grocery store, just a little family owned shoot and scoot where the old guys hang out in the morning. People don't lock their doors much, some of us don't know where the house keys are even. All in all its completely funky, a fifties throwback. ...............Thank gawd there's a town of 50,000 about 15 minutes away.........and that Columbus is a 45 minute drive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They were awfully boring during adolescence, but later on one appreciates the peacefullness and the unlocked doors. The one thing I like least about Ontario is the winter weather. Seems like a queer way to get to Canada. I talked to Jim at the Corner Coffee House in Newmarket on Thursday night. He said that Sundays can be busy at the Coffee House if the weather is nice. He suggested that we try a saturday afternoon for a get-together. We booked Saturday, February 3rd, a week from today, 4-7 pm. We can stay longer if we wish. At eight o'clock Jim will have one of his saturday night performers playing. There's no cover charge. Newmarket is a 15 to 20 minute drive north of Toronto if you are on the east end and go up the 404. You can also hit the town by driving east on highway 9 off of highway 400. It's a about an hour's drive south and then east from Orillia. The coffee shop is at 227 Main Street, phone 905-895-1696. Turn south on Main Street from highway 9 (Davis Drive). (Unlike the other parts of Newmarket, Main Street retained a lot of the flavour of a small town.) Sophocleese has played at the coffeshop several time, Little Hawk at least once. I don't know about Toronto mudcatters. Jim runs a cozy little coffeehouse in a friendly, gentle, professional manner. Jim is a reitred British policeman and an author. He has several self-help books in print and I he recently signed a contract to publish novels that he has written. Jim also cooks a lot of the food, things like quiche and steak and kidney pie with mushy peas. I have more to write but now I must vaccuum and scrub the bathrooms before Carol's train gets too close. So, who wants to come to Newmarket next Saturday afternoon to meet Carol, play songs and talk? Who needs a ride with a friendly mudcat neighbour or even a crotchety mudcat neighbour? He's confused or being unscrupulous by turning a story that I told him back on me. At least when he turns stories back on me I recognize them. A friend who I lost track of after he moved to British Columbia and former bass player for Sam Moon, Matt Minglewood and the Unversal Power in Cape Breton in the late 60s, kept a toenail collection. I can still picture the toenail jar one hot summer night on his dresser in the rooming house room where he lived in the 70s. The rooming house was three houses from Rochdale in Toronto in the 70s. Rochdale was built as a U of T residence but it had quickly turned into a major drug center. That night we were playing acoustic guitars. A drugged out woman in the next room of the rooming house suddenly appeared. Well, her legs appeared - dangling out the window as she threatened her boyfriend that she would jump out the third floor window. My friend, annoyed, yelled out his window, "You always say that. For Christ's sake, jump." She declined although I don't recall her being overly polite. After she stopped dangling her legs the toenail collection on his dresser by the window sucked on my brain. Our moods had changed. He no longer wanted to play Pretty Woman so we talked toenails. Carol is taking the train because she doesn't like to fly. That seems perfectly reasonable to me since I don't like flying either. Unfortunately, I'm working on an Air Canada contract so I've had to fly to Montreal earlier this month and will have to fly again while Carol is here. |

Maybe I can persuade my friend to come to that workshop instead of doing the wiccan thing...? We'll see what happens. February 4th is a normal Circle dance at Eady Hall, held by Kelly, $5 each and potluck, and since I won't be holding a Circle Dance until march 1st, I hope Carol would like to go to this one. Maybe the Orillia people can meet for lunch at Mezzaluna on Feb 2nd? 1 pm or something? |

Katy and Stu were there, doing duets mostly. The Daver came, and wowed us with his bluesy and smooth renditions of original songs. Trish was there, trying desperately to tune her 12-string. Jennifer sang some very soulful stuff, including one by Blackie and the Rodeo Kings (an Ontario folk trio, named after a Townes Van Zandt song). Little Hawk flew in, but Hesperis couldn't make it cos she was a bit low on energy last night, probably due to cigarette smoke the previous night at Finnegan's. A Canadian native man came, a new face, and played some original tunes on guitar and harmonica. Pauline blew the roof off, as usual, singing old Eagles and Jimmie Rodgers tunes. Larry the Luthier arrived late with his lovely daughter and a new guitar for us all to try out. Flattop sang "Jesus On That Mainline, Tell Him What You Want", in his ongoing quest to recruit members for the New Raptist Apothecarial Reform Church of Orillia, which only meets on February 30th each year, and then only if the weather is good. But...most notably....Carol C came with her accordion. Now this is the first time anyone has played an accordion at song circle, as far as I know, and it was very well received. Carol is anxious for people to know that accordions are not restricted to playing hackneyed polka music. The piece she played was indeed a very nice piece of music...sounded kind of classical to me. She was obviously nervous and tripped up a few times, but so what? It was still a great piece of music. I now hope to try and learn a little accordion from her, just to see what it's like. It appears to be quite challenging, as you've got 3 things to think about...chording and rythm with the left hand...melodies with the right...and pumping air through it with both arms. Actually, that's 4 things. Sheesh. No wonder she was nervous. - LH |
