Subject: Book search:"StaggerLee/Black Hustlers" From: Kim Beissel < design@alphalink.com.au > Date: 12 Dec 96 - 07:51 AM Hi, can anyone help me? I am seeking a book related to recent recordings by Nick Cave. Subject described as "the folk poetry of Black Hustlers" and "a book on Negro American toasts" with a violent recitation of "Stagger Lee" by "a black hustler from New York called Big Stick". This ribald version was set to new music by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. A version of the traditional song "Henry Lee" and the childrens song "King Kong Kitchie Kitchie Ki-Mi-O" were also recorded, and the lyrics may be derived from the same book. Thanks in advance for your advice. Kim Beissel, Melbourne, Australia |

Subject: RE: Book search:"StaggerLee/Black Hustlers" From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 May 10 - 11:53 PM Oh, all right, since you've patiently waited since 1996— Most likely that would be: The Life: The Lore and Folk Poetry of the Black Hustler by Dennis Wepman, Ronald B. Newman, Murray B. Binderman (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 1976) Other editions: Los Angeles: Holloway House Pub. Co., [1993?] For sources, see: Google Books WorldCat.org |
