It has been a while since Ol' Bob has dropped anchor here, but it seems like not a day has past--Oh, Dot-commerce turned from the saviour of our economy to the millstone around our neck, Napster has been zapped by a legal beam from the Music Industry Death Star, and our pensions and IRA's have shrivelled up like prunes (which are now referred to as "Dried Plums") but forget all that-- someone made a commentusing the name of Pol Pot, someone else decided it was inappropriate, and the threats and accusations began flying once more--thus beginning yet another Mudcat Nor'Easter on the Darjeeling Sea--

Don't think for one moment that Ol' Bob defends Pol Pot, in fact, shocking as it may seem, he thinks Pol Pot was a very bad man, who did some very bad things. In fact, Ol' Bob thinks there are a great many bad men (and bad women) who have done very many bad things. Even more shocking, he thinks people should bring their names up, either in serious discussion, or, because their deeds often shock the soul, in a sort of sardonic jest (Parody and Satire having been considered an appropriate vehicle for the conveyance of moral outrage since the time of the Classical Greeks)

The thing is, Ol' Bob thinks that the truly socially and politically concerned person would feel compelled to discuss Pol Pot and the genocide that he was involved in, as well as previous and subsequent genocides--

As far as Ol' Bob knows, know one in this forum has any deep culpability for what happened in Cambodia, and it is his thought that, for that reason, members of the group ought not to be subject to any of the cinematically induced outrage that has been expressed in other threads.

As a closing thought, Ol' Bob is truly saddened that, for many, knowledge of the Cambodian Genocide only came after seeing the movie "The Killing Fields". He cannot help but reflect that, if people spent less time bickering about the "appropriateness" of others casual conversation, and more time reading and discussing the news of the world, this would not be the case.

Those are certainly points worth considering, Bob. The original poster of the Pol Pot thread was taking a shot at me, and seemed to be implying that my toleration of MAV, and my suggestion that he is sometimes actually worth talking to, was equivalent to extending complete acceptance and toleration toward Pol Pot...a pretty astounding premise! I guess those conservatives and Republicans are way more dangerous than I had fully realized, despite my lifelong leftist leanings. Of course, the poster was engaging in satire...but his satire was rather nasty and heavy-handed, to say the least.

I don't think he likes me.

However, he doesn't really know me.

Or to put it another way, in 2010 who is going to care?

BTW, I did a search on Ebay once and discovered that there are Ebay members under the following names: Adolf Hitler, Satan, Jesus Christ, God, Joe Stalin, Jack the Ripper, and just about anyone else you can think of who is famous or infamous...

Also there are Ebay members under every self-insulting name imaginable, including the scatological...you gotta wonder.

Ebay seems to be rolling along fine in spite of it, and I trust that Mudcat will as well. I will no doubt catch hell now for having deigned to even acknowledge your existence, although I think you made some worthwhile points up there.

Just a comment, before I go on to sites where I do not feel like my personal worth is not being weighed.

These kinds of threads, especially to newcomers, make us wonder if it's a hint, a clue that perhaps you are operating or looking for interested members of political groups or communal homes, etc.

This is not far-fetched, since I myself, an American citizen, have often run into situations. I rented a house once, with other people, the American way, and once I was in, the guy who was already renting there lays all this communist talk on me, and lorded his beliefs over me. He had a job in the medical field, while I was a measly receptionist, and struggling, and I couldn't afford to tell him to F*** off, and, yes, I did even like him slightly, but, I began to see that everyone is nuts, we're all just walking through the world together and we owe love and respect to each other.

I find it very obtrusive to come to a place of communication, especially about music, and feel like someone's putting the screws to my communication again.

It's nothing funny.

As for Cambodians, I've read a book by a Cambodian accordion player. His whole family was killed and his life was made a nightmare, by the Khmer Rouge. Then, in the local newspaper, once, I read an article about other victims who now live locally, one who was forced into killing.

I have been the victim of racisim and hate quite a lot in my own life, due to weird factoids/etc. I don't find it pressing to defend myself as a black, white, or any ethnic.

I'm not sure if The Mudcat Cafe has ulterior motives, I would assume not. But, this has happened to me, a lot, in my life -- things being not what they seem.

As for me, my communication shall not be subversive. Sorry if you guys have so much fun with it. I think your perverts.

As someone whose family was directly affected by Hitler I object to the title of this thread. Do you think you're being cute by drawing attention to this thread in this way? You claim concern but you obviously don't care how you affect other people in your quest. I think you just want attention for yourself.

Granny is not the only new member who has wandered in during one of Mudcat's less sensitive moments and wondered what the hell they had gotten into. Her exit is a fraction louder than others' have been, but I don't think she even realized that most of us are not even bothering to read this thread, or the ones it relates to, too much anymore. I just wish that new members could somehow get sent directly to the FAQ thread as soon as they join so they could get a heads-up on what to expect. This is a wonderful forum indeed, but for people new to the net or to the Mudcat, it can overwhelm pretty quickly. I hate to see us hang onto just the tougher visitors.

If you care about this sort of thing, perhaps there is a reminder in this situation to us all, that befriending the newer members can help us all, in the long run. This can be done in a personal, one to one fashion, and I do this when I can. But there is a way to do it less personally too if that's your style. I made a template for my desktop that creates an invitation and clicky to the FAQ thread. I'm going to try to remember to use it whenever I start a new thread, as I did with the one I created earlier today. I hope to include links to the other wonderful material piling up now in the Permathreads, as well. Nothing quite like a link to get someone to go to these.

Ol' Bob can't help but be amazed that some people's indignation surpasses their ability to read--Bob does welcome discussions about Hitler, about Pol Pot, about the Young Turks, about Stalin and all the other genocidal maniacs of this and every other century--as he said above, he is highly suspect of people who go around with their hearts on their sleeves, looking for excuses to throw fits of self-righteous indignation--

People are reacting with some feeling because, of late, quite a bit of feelings have been stirred up and thread titles like yours have been one unfortunate way of doing that. Others are reacting with ignoring. Some of us, even though we have enjoyed the quality of your thinking often in the past, are staying chilled out to recover our own best thinking. And among all these people are those who don;t recognize your handle, and don't have any good memories to go with it-- they see only a Guest, and it's a shame but the name of GUEST has often been muddied hereabouts.

Thread titles like this will provoke more reaction than thought, whether you meant it to or not. If what you want is someone to think deep and long with you about big issues, I'd be glad to hear from you and continue discussing in e-mail.

On a happier note, I just today got a CD of my buddie Banjo Ben playing. It is a great CD, I hope he puts it out for public release.
