Strangely, they fall under the category of wat we simply call 'studies' - as in, there is fememist literary criticism, black literary criticism, and then literary criticism. The last one covers what could be classified as 'white Anglo-saxon male dominated criticism' and always has. That's why there is frequently not felt to be a need for a specific study or interest group. I am not saying that this covers the interests of white men only, or even appropriately - but traditionally, it's sort of been their bailiwick, and there's been no need to attach "white studies" or "masculine criticism" to it. On the other subject- I'm white, at least in skin, and I don't see why I should be ashamed of it. I suspect there are African Americans (ex slaves) and likely also Native Americans in my heritage. I like that - but my skin is kind of pale pink. Okay, so as I child I always wanted a pretty brown, but I've learened to deal with what I've got. If you don't like it, that makes you a racist, not me. Oh, and Alex, You're a git. And a... a.. cream-faced loon. And a badger-backed ankle biter. They also didn't like my signing of each post, "Peace"; perhaps I sound self-righteous. I still think it works (the golden rule that is), unless of course you want folks to beat the crap out of you (in a literal and figurative sense). In the case of which I write, it was assumed that I was anti-somethingoranother because I am pro-Christian. Huh? As long as I live I won't figure it out. I am pro-bicycle too, but I'm not anti-walking. You can get where you're going in more than one compatible fashion without trodding over another's methods, faith, or sensibilities. You may not fit into that category of course. Its the use of the word "Christian" with this meaning behind it (rather than its real meaning) that many will object to. Like racism it assumes an elitist position. Many Christians tend to look down on the rest of humanity in the same way as white/male extremists do with black/jewish/whatever. What you have to realise here is that its very hard to know what anyones real meanings are when you just read few typewritten words, hence the problem Mousethief has. There will always be someone ready to jump down your throat and then others with an axe to grind will join the bandwagon. |

I've noticed your pax and it always reminds me of my Dad who sometimes would sign letters to the congregation (he was a clergyman) the same. This is a pleasant reminder. I agree with you also regarding the perception "that a mistake is a reason...". I'd rather be corrected than dismissed (or dissed), even if my ego gets bruised in the process. Much of my fun here in Mudcatville is "listening" to everybody get involved with one another enough to be comfortable correcting and discussing and sharing views, even when they're not my own. These folks can be a bit tedious, even when they are right about some point. as to various comments above about supposed insensitive references to religious/ethnic groups, I am reminded of the time when Samuel Johnson, compiler of the famous dictionary, had a group of 'ladies' call on him with a complaint.
