I sincerely hope that Tony is well and making a speedy recovery. I must admit that I haven't seen him since a Towersey some moons ago.

Don't go yet Tony, we still don't really know what is in Silbury Hill.

Very best wishes for a most speedy recovery

My father in law had that type of cancer. Not nice, very debilitating, but surgery was a life saver. He's fine now, apart from a delicate tum, hope Tony makes as good a recovery.

Take care.

Tony phoned last night and sends his thanks for all the messages, cards, etc. Obviously he can't respond to all of them, but he does appreciate them all (I think he's really lapping up all the fan mail!). He's due to start the chemo soon, so I unashamedly repeat this news report from the BBC Folk Web site:

TONY ROSE BENEFIT FOR SIDMOUTH 26/06/01

Tony Rose, the well-loved and respected west country folk singer, has recently undergone a major operation for cancer of the colon. His course of chemotherapy may cost as much as £9,000. Many of his friends wish to support Tony and his family at this difficult time and have set up a Benefit Fund. Sidmouth International Festival has included a special concert in the festival programme to take place on Thursday 9th August. Performers so far include Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson, Roy Bailey, Chris and Pete Coe, Mike Waterson and Chris Foster. The Festival has generously offered to contribute the marquee, PA, lighting, stage and staff. The concert is a non-season ticket event with a minimum ticket price of £8. At the time of going to press, Whitby and Fylde Festivals have also offered support. Other people may wish to organise a small event, club night etc; a number are already doing so. Tony has asked us to express his thanks to every one who has sent cards and messages of support, which are all very much appreciated.
Anyone who would like to make a contribution to the fund can send a cheque payable to the 'Tony Rose Benefit Fund' by post to:
Tony Rose Benefit Fund,
The Whole Wide World,
27 Market Street,
Crewkerne, Somerset,
TA18 7JU.

Best wishes Tony and get well soon

I have fond memories of times together at Sidmouth, Whitby and other places back in the early '70s

Tony was the very first major artist we booked at our one day festival (Swinton , Manchester UK). He was superb and set a standard we have had to try very hard to maintain for the last 17 years.

Hope he is OK and gets well soon.

Just found sites relating to Tony and this thread as a newcomer to the internet - isn't it wonderful! I saw Tony back in the late 70s/early 80s touring the smaller uk clubs and was just so impressed by the real traditional approach, and laid back personality. thanks for all the pleasure recordings and performances have brought Tony and here's wishing you a full and speedy recovery. Take care of yourself. regards, love, Janis

Cyril and I had a phone call from Tony this morning (Tuesday) from home! He is very much stronger and getting so every day. His stay in hospital was much shorter than expected, though he will be returning for tests in a week or so. Altogether very positive news - he sounds quite like his old self.

I should perhaps be a little more explicit - the surgery was very radical, Tony is very ill, and we don't know yet as to what the future holds.

Someone gave me a tape of Tony Rose many years ago - I still sing a song or two from it. Great voice and style.

Wes. Give my regards to John Wlatham!

I was always curious about Tony Rose, then he played a concert at Holstein's in Chicago in 1982 and I was really impressed by his song choice. I have since gotten all the lps and the new CD. The singing, the playing, it's all there. Here's to his speedy recovery.

One of my most endearing memories of Tony was at Whitby Folk Week, many years ago. At ceildhs they would have booked artists to do a song spot (to give the dancers and the band a break no doubt). Most singers would hate this as they were singing to a lot of people who just wanted to dance. So they would dive in, rattle off a couple of quick uptempo numbers and bugger off smartish. Not Tony. He got us to sit down on the dance floor in a sort of hollow circle, went to the middle, and did some really sensitive stuff. What a man!

Hope you're better soon, Tony.

Les

There was a good turn out on Saturday for a joint 'decades' birthday party for Tony (60) and John Waltham (50) at Stourton Caundle, Dorset. Sadly, Tony was unable to be with us, as he'd been rushed into hospital earlier in the week, and suffered some radical surgery. Helen, Tony's wife, was despatched from the royal bed to tell us that we should enjoy ourselves and there were to be no miserable songs - as if anybody could match Tony in the miserable song stakes!

It's a shame that Tony couldn't be there, so I thought I'd open this thread so we could have an world wide on-line version, and I'm inviting old and new friends, fans, enemies, etc to share their most ridiculous moments, fruity stories, and so on, with Tony, which I'll get to him every few days, and perhaps raise a chuckle for the old bugger.
