Yep, and they did play the Ballad Of St Anne's reel. I tried to play along with it on mandolin banjo but they were in some weird key (not G or D) or I was out of tune.

Thank you Alison. After wading though a man with an electric guitar, I got see Mick and Company perform. He wore me out with his energy. A beautiful tribute to Jimmy. If the group had tried to sing the "Parting Glass" I'd had been in tears. The "Famine Road" was a first for me. Hope to learn it soon. Congratulations, Mick. Wonderful stuff.

Thanks, folks, and thanks to my darling Alison, forever known as THE FAIR ONE, for letting folks know about it. It was so friggin cold that I could barely feel my fingers, which accounts for some missed notes (fingerstyle is a bear when you don't have fingers.......LOL). At any rate, for those that would like another chance to hear us, we are playing tomorrow, Sunday June the third, on the same stage. The same link should work. They asked us to come back and do the set again.

This is the largest all volunteer festival of its kind anywhere. It is three days of every kind of dancing, singing, performance art, as well as arts and crafts anywhere. The entire downtown area is shut down and approximately 15,000 volunteers make it happen. It has been featured on all the major network morning shows over the years and is featured in an exhibit on volunteerism at the Smithsonian Institution. The stage you saw us perform on is built around a huge stabile done by Alexander Calder, which is called Le Grande Vitesse.

If you all get a chance, look in on us tomorrow at 2:15 Eastern Standard Time (US) until 3:15PM. And if you hang around for the act after us, you will see my little girl, Ciara, dancing with the Donahue Irish Dancers. As a side note, she competed in the Detroit International Feis today and took a silver (2nd Place) in the treble jig in hardshoe. This is her toughest competition, so I am very proud of the wee girl.

Jon, it just must have been the connection. We do The Ballad of St. Anne's Reel/St. Anne's Reel in straight G.

Catspaw............bite me...........the jokes are funny as hell and you know it...........LOL.

Thanks again to all for the nice comments.

All the best,

Mick

Just happened by the Mudcat and caught this thread in time for the Sunday performance. I'm really enjoying hearing your voice for the first time, Mick, and now that I can see you in comparison to the other guys on stage, and I can also see what a Big Mick you are. Really enjoying it. Wish I could sing with you sometime.

Yeah.........one of those days. I have heard from Turlough O'Carolan's Solicitor and he indicates that I may not have made enough money in my life so far to cover the damage I did to Planxty Irwin. Boy.......you ever had one of those performances where your brain clearly knows what to do and your hands basically tell you to f#@k off? Between that and the damn cold damp wind playing hell with our instruments, we were struggling. But we managed to pull it in and make it through.........LOL.

Thanks very much for the nice comments. Did any of you catch the interview I did beforehand? I plugged the hell out of Mudcat and mentioned several of you by name.

All the best,

Mick

I was able to catch the first half of the set on Sunday afternoon. It was VERY enjoyable. Can anyone tell me why the video quality was so bad. Is it my video card or the source image? All I got was blurs, enough to make out shapes and colors but not nearly as clear as I would have liked.

Dammit 'Gin..........try as I might, I can't teach you the difference between a Kilt and a Tutu, let alone ladies and gents........LOL.

Not sure, Banj, which it is, although I did listen to the tape later and the sound was horrid. In the stage area the sound mix was much better than what I heard on the tape.

Both of these gigs were from hell......thank God for a good audience. Despite the sunshine on Sunday, the atmosphere was windy, cool and damp. And Saturday was one of the coldest on record and damp. The effect on our instruments was dramatic. We simply couldn't keep 'em in tune. It was very tough. In reviewing the tape, Tom (Mandolin) was tuning every other song, and still had them pulling. As I referenced above, the 12 string went out during Planxty Irwin so badly that it was distracting.

Which brings me to a question. Does anyone have any experience with the Rainsong line of instruments? This was, by far, the worst combination of conditions I have performed under. The effect on the instruments, as stated above, was dramatic. I am thinking that a guitar which is made of carbon fiber and reputed to be weather proof might not be a bad investment. I have played one and they have a very good sound in the shop, a little light on bass response but very acceptable. I am told they, like the Ovation, sound excellent when amplified.

Second question.......The cold, windy, and damp weather also impacted my voice and Mike's (other singer) voice in a very noticable way. What do Mudcatters do to prepare for these types of conditions, and what do Mudcatters do to recover between closely spaced gigs in tough conditions? Any sprays that work well? Any tricks?

Mick
