And finally, Fergie - there's a singer by the name of Lola Falana, hermana is Spanish for sister (I think), and with some poetic license you could mention playing the piana.

Umm.. guess it depends on how you pronounce it. Like..

"You say ban-anna,, and I say ban-arna" or somesuch..;)

Using my pronunciation piranha (the fish) would be OK - probably not in US or Spain.

For a southern hemisphere slant you could add Australian or Kiwiana - must be more of those too...

In Oz any word ending in "..anner" would rhyme, e.g. spanner, banner, if you pronounced banana as "bananna", but most oz-folk don't pronounce it that way, anyway, so it is a moot point.

The point, by the way, being that we don't tend to pronounce the "r" in "spanner" etc, but pronounce it as if it were spelled "spanna". Years (& years) ago (I'm showing my age) there was an ad on tv and the jingle went "Oh, you canna hand a man a grander spanner"

A likely rhyme in Oz for "banana", then would be "Torana", a well-known Holden car.

How about "Hard hearted Hannah, the girl from Savannah"?

There used to be a funny music group called The Cool Bananas, in Oz about 20 years ago. Rory O'Donoghue fronted it and his claim to fame was that he used to be part of the Aunty Jack Show with Graham Bond, who has fallen into a commercial tv black hole by becoming the resident architect-tv presenter on a home improvement show. These two were also the authors and performers in two of the funniest Shakespearian parodies I've ever seen.

I never thought I'd see the day - but then again Bond is following in the footsteps of Reg Livermore who played a fantastic Frankenfurter in Rocky Horror, and put on some truly amazing all-singing, all-dancing one man shows and was influential in the social acceptance of homosexuality about 20 years ago.

But I digress. (If you never saw these guys perform you wouldn't know how strange it is to see them acting normal. They are all part of the Oz cultural phenomena.)

Back to the point - one of the songs by The Cool Bananas had a chorus which went: BA-na-NA-na-na NA-na-na. Very clever. But I can't remember what the song was called.

I just had this discussion at a songwriting workshop last Saturday, wherein some other people in the room insisted that they DO rhyme exactly (despite my pointing to the obvious fact that "m" and "n" are different consonants). I do use them AS A RHYME occasionally, but when I do I KNOW I'm cheating!

However, I draw the line at using different vowel sounds ("ena" and "ana"). It just doesn't sound clever. In a humorous song, a clever silly rhyme is funny; an unclever silly non-rhyme is silly but won't make the audience laugh.

Sorry Genie, but in Britain banana most certainly does rhyme with mañana, but does not rhyme with Hannah, Montana and most of the other words in your verse

I gave up on banana songs after hearing Harry Chapin's "30,000 Pounds of Bananas."

Factoid: Did you know that "banana" is the name given to the fruit where in originated, in Guinea, western Africa. It was taken thence to the Canary Islands and eventually made its way to the new world, courtesy of European explorers and colonizers.

It doesn't rhyme with mañana in Britain or anywhere,though it might be close enough for some purposes. I've never heard anyone pronounce it "banyana".

The other thing is that this side of the water the second "a" is long, rather than short. That's why Hannah woudln't be a rhyme (though the way we tend to say "Montana", that would be.)

John Morris sings a wonderful version of "I've never seen a straight banana" that rhymes "banana" with "Havana"!
