Subject: Mudcat Night at the Press Room From: Naemanson Date: 28 Jul 01 - 12:42 AM I guess I am the first one home and therefore I get the honor of starting this thread. Tonight we met at the Press Room in Portsmouth, New Hampster, USA. There were a bunch of us. I hope I remember to mention everyone. First of all there were the locals and regulars; Curmudgeon, Bat Goddess, Jeri, Tyler, Barry Finn. Then there were those of us from up the coast, myself and Charley Noble. Then there were those from away, bbc, Duane, Turtle, Emily B, Bill, and arriving late but arriving nevertheless was Big Mick. We had a great time. The voices were raised in song and the beer flowed freely. There were plenty of people there who were NOT Mudcats and that was all right too, I guess. Everyone sang something with the sole exception of bbc. However, later, after Big Mick arrived she and Jeri set out to undermine the moral character of a 4 year old girl by "handling the merchandise." This story may be too risque for some of you so I would advise those of your who are faint of heart to stop reading now. It seems Big Mick was tired but Jeri kept bugging him for a song. He commented, in front of Jeri and bbc, that his "…ass was too tired…" This simple statement prompted the ladies to physically test his statement for veracity. Their verdict was that Mick would have no trouble performing. Unfortunately a nearby child, seeing what they did decided to get in on the act and, uh, physically tested his statement also. Overall it was a great evening. Thanks to Curmudgeon and Bat Goddess for their hospitality and organizational skills in starting and maintaining the sessions at the Press Room. Thanks to the other Mudcatters I have now met and added to my life list. I am slowly but surely catching up to Bill Sables! By the way, there are pictures… |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Night at the Press Room From: Bat Goddess Date: 28 Jul 01 - 08:22 AM I don't know what house the moon was in or whether Jupiter was aligned with Mars, but the Great Mudcat Convergence on The Press Room was quite an event! Even the waitstaff enjoyed themselves! (While keeping us from dying of thirst, of course.) It's all Emily B's fault -- she asked what was going on in this neck of the woods this week. She and her husband took the prize, I think, for coming the greatest distance, closely followed by Turtle from about the same degree of westing, but more northerly. And how fortuitous that bbc and Duane were also in the vicinity. Must have been in the stars (see opening 'graph). I don't know what was better -- the wonderful music or the sense of community among people who had previously only met mouse to mouse rather than face to face. Wish we all could have spent more time just talking, but I guess that's what Mudcat is here for. What a grand evening! And thanks to everyone who helped create it! (BTW, there was at least one Mudcatter among the regular listeners.) Bat Goddess |

The amount of music was up from the usual, the background noise level was far less, and the session spread to include tables where folks normally chatted instead of sang. A wonderful night! Naemanson, I don't recall a 4 year old girl even being there. Honestly, Jeri did not "keep bugging" Mick - I asked him once. He accused me of abusing a poor tired-assed man (or something like that), and did a song with absolutely no hint of refusal. |

I got that story from the other participant. She explained that the child had decided the actions were normal for society. There are some parents with a problem on their hands now thanks to those ladies.

Yes, it was a great session. I especially love the big ballads that Barry does, Jeff Warner left far too early, Jeri's rendition of Fire Down Below is probably still rattling ceiling tiles, Bat Goddess's tastful rendering of "Her Pictured Turned to the Wall" still has me in tears; too bad Big Mick came in so late, only got to hear him do one song...no wonder I could hardly pry my eyes open this morning. Naemanson did not blow out his voice this time around and I can still squeak a little. I do wonder what the average tourist wandering around Portsmouth thinks if he stopped in the Press Room while we were rattling the rafters. Glad Brett was energized enough to chauffer us back across the border into Maine. Happily the olde bridge was functioning properly, or maybe we just flew over the gapping void in our general euphoria! Tonight, it's back to work for Roll & Go at the Chocolate Church in Bath, along with our friends from Castlebay. |

I've been really upset about this since last night, but thought it might have Just Been Me, and didn't know quite how to word a message without completely "losing it" in my post. We had a bit of a disaster after the session. I was supposed to meet him a few miles out of town, and he would follow me to go eat with Bat Goddess and Curmudgeon. I left, and never saw him again. (Trust me, I LOOKED.) If anyone's heard from him since leaving the Press Room last night, would you PM/e-mail/call me please? |

Now that I can quit being worried, some more on the session. Oh - there was a guy there named Tony who was not a Mudcatter, a regular, or even a local, who did a couple of GREAT songs. Hope he comes back again! Charley, the song Bat Goddess did "Aunt Clara," which is her theme song. I believe Dick Greenhaus knows all 40 verses. ;-) Naemanson, if that little girl is using folk singers as role models, she's in a lot of trouble already! |

BG – sometime I would love to get the words to "Aunt Clara". It's the kind of song my mother would appreciate. I might even trade you "Fish Fingers" for it; no, not any of the songs that you might have heard of by the same title but a very special song we learned from our British friend and co-founder of Roll & Go, Chez Watts. Or maybe even "Tattooed Lady", not to be confused with several unrelated tattooed lady songs. So that's my first offer. Whacha say? We got a deal? |

Charmion and I were at a great concert with Johnny Collins at Rasputin's in Ottawa, with lots of good singers in the audience. Still, I wish we could have joined you guys at the Press Room. Next time... BTW, here is a shameless plug for a get together in Ottawa on 18 August at our house if anybody can make it.(see my thread on the topic - sorry I don't know how to do a blue clicky) We're up to about 7 or 8 people, so far, with some non Mudcatters. We got home to New York last night after a very pleasant 5 days in Maine. Thanks to all the locals for only 1 night & a half day of rain during that time! We spent an afternoon & evening w/ kendall & got a guided tour of Portland, as well as a nice dinner, a good chat, & some music. No, I didn't sing there, either, but at the Press Room, I *did* sing along! I know almost no Celtic or sea music & didn't want to change the mood. If you come to my house, I'll probably sing to you in my own livingroom, maybe. Shy, I guess. That brings us to the incident w/ Mick. Jeri didn't know about the 4-year old's participation; I heard that from Mick, who had it first-hand, so to speak. (SINSULL, we're speaking of Mick's posterior; this had absolutely nothing to do w/ his potato!) Here's the true tale--Mick, Jeri, & I were chatting. Mick teased Jeri that she had *forced* a poor, tired-assed man to sing. She peered around him to see whether he was speaking, in truth, of the condition of said behind. She gave it a little pat & it seemed ok to her. Since Jeri & I are the wrestling team who prevailed against Mick, I felt the need to verify her conclusion--just a little pat on one cheek. In Clinton-esque style, I should say that I didn't even enjoy it (much)! Mick happened to have his backside close to & facing a booth containing a family group. According to him, after my pat, the toddler in the booth gave him a little tap, too. Yup, Naemanson, that little girl is probably warped for life--the guilt, oh, the guilt! On a more serious note, we very much appreciated Naemanson driving us down from Maine. It was wonderful to see him, Jeri, Barry, & Mick--Mudcatters we already knew. It was great to meet Bat Goddess, Curmudgeon, Turtle, Tyler, Charley Noble, Emily B & Bill. Sincere thanks to Curmudgeon & Bat Goddess for running this wonderful session! He might actually find the lyrics to Aunt Clara in there and not want to continue with the trade with BG. Bbc, if you just didn't feel like singing, it's ok. As far as the mood goes, it's whatever the particular combination of people on a particular night make it. Knowing the type of music you like (or thinking I do) anything you sang would have gone over well. (Tony even did a Jackson Browne top 10 hit, and folks seemed to enjoy it very much.) I almost posted this in the Jug thread, but it fits better here. We have a friend, Rick, who used to live around here. He sometimes comes to the session and brings his daughter. (Bat Goddess, do you know how old she is? 8 Maybe?) She once brought her harp, and had learned "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star." She played it, and we all joined in. This kid is far more competent in a few areas, and I don't mean skill level, (as Rick Fielding might say, she has an "ear" that is magnificent) than many adults are. Even though we do mostly traditional material, the joy in sharing music is in the sharing, not necessarily what the songs are. Bbc & Duane, it was great to have you here, and I hope you enjoyed it. I think Kendall might have even had a good time on that particular night. Mick came up again today to join us in a very informal gig. There STILL wasn't much of a chance to talk, but it was good to see and hear him again. I wasn't rude even once, by the way. |

Emily B & Bill did a great rendition of (I think it's called) "Roll Her From The Wall" among other songs. Duane I didn't know you were fond of the shanties, I suspect you sang them out of pity for the us & like bbc didn't want to upset the mood. Very thoughtfull of you both but WE SING ANYTHING THAT'S EVEN CLOSE TO FOLK UP HERE, just so's you'll know the next time. I can vouche for the truthfullness of what bbc says & saw, except both Jeri & bbc took their sweet time at examining Big Mick's goods & the poor ruined little was rolling in her dad's lap with laughter (I think she was laughting at Mick's merchandise & not her own behavior), maybe she not passed repair. Turtle was fiddling all night in front of our table & I didn't get to meet her till the end (shucks). As usuall Mick comes through the door way past his bedtime wussing his waay to a beer in the hopes that he won't get asked to sing. Same for him as for Naemanson, no mercy. The regulars were the treat that they always are, full of song & warm welcomes. I don't think that Big Mick & Naemanson are gonna like the pictures, they show me as usuall holding up the big wussy guys, well I didn't want you all to see pictures of them face flat on the floor. It was great fun meeting so many 'catters all at once. There are very few of us here in Texas. Everyone added at least a song (OK, we're waiting to be invited to bbc's livingroom to hear hers). So not only did we get to put a face to a name, but also a bit of musical style too. It's terrific to share music with others that enjoy it so much. We mudcatters are a blessed and special community. First, do allow me to extend a belated, yet most sincere note of appreciation to all of those noble Mudcatters who contributed so much to the success of our Friday Session at the Press Room; and to those who were there in spirit to continue being there in spirit, check out Duane's photos as per above. And a special recognition for Big Mick who so kindly returned North on Sunday to assist Linn, jeri, and I in providing music for the Strafford County (NH) Democratic Party Picnic. While the sussions at the Press Room are not really open sessions, they are not closed; and Mudcatters are always welcome. However, these gatherings have a tendency to become too large for real comfort. Therefore, it would be advisable for any of you who are planning to attend to let me or Bat Goddess know in advance so that we may secure you appropriate seating. Good Songs to All -- Tom |

I was fortunate to be able to attend at all, given the shenanigans that Shaw Markets Management was up to, but that is another thread. I must tell you that finding parking in Portsmouth, NH is not the toughest thing I have ever done, but it runs a close second. But it was worth the effort. What a wonderful bunch of folks I ran into. Bat Goddess and Curmudgeon are simply the best. I enjoyed the brief time I had with them. I am also greatful that they put up with me. The assignment I was on was very intense and my mind and voice were both fried. Nonetheless, they were gracious and patient. I hope to come back and give them a better picture of my music. Now, onto the evening. First let me tell you that the wee girl tapping my tush actually happened. It was so funny. Beebs and Jeri had determined that, based on my "tired arse" comment, that they simply were honor bound to determine the state of my arse. And so they proceeded to have a peek and give me a little pat and pronounce my arse as fine, which I was greatly relieved to hear. And next thing you know I feel another little pat and turn just in time to see this absolutely darling wee lass, about 6 or 7 years of age, running like hell to her Da and jumping in his lap. I roared...............she had copied the "big girls". I chuckled about it the next day. I must tell you all that there are some very talented folks at this session. One gentleman, Tony from Galway, has a voice that I would love to have. I am sorry I only got to hear one song. And Tom Hall (Curmudgeon) has a repertoire to die for. He is an excellent session leader, patient and talented. My dear friend, Jeri, continues to knock me out with her singing and playing. And Bat Goddess.........what can I say? Great voice, great repertoire.......and a wonderful person. A young man was there......name escapes me but he played on Sunday as well,......he has a lot of great music ahead of him. Very talented. Beebs and Duane gave me a wonderful ball cap that had a picture of a mosquito on it with the phrase "Bite Me" on it. My daughter appropriated it as soon as I walked in the door........LOL. I loved meeting Naes. Let me tell you something, my friends. When a man looks big to me.........that is a big fella. But he is a jovial giant with a heart of gold. Glad to have made your acquaintance. Now for the bad news. I am headed back to New England for two more weeks on the 12th of August. You can bet your bippy that if I can get away on Friday the 17th, I will be at The Press Room. Only this time, I come prepared. All the best, Mick |

The only time I know of there not being a session was when the place was closed for maintenance on the floors some time around 1988. They have entertainment on other nights, but not much folk these days. There also used to be an open mic on Tue nights, but I haven't been for ages and I don't know if it's still on. |

And I just got a call from Bob Frost; the Angel Band is back from Ireland, so it'll be the full usual mad house at The Press Room this Friday night, plus getting caught up on their trip. Then I put the CD someplace "safe" and haven't seen it since. These words are as I remember them, and I'm sorry I don't have the notes to say where the shanty came from. (I'm sure someone does, though.) There's a refrain after each line of verse.

Subject: RE: Mudcat Night at the Press Room From: Turtle Date: 08 Aug 01 - 12:40 PM Well, I'm finally home in Minnesota (after an all-too-brief week in Vermont)--and it's a joy to read this thread, but not nearly as much fun as we had at the Press Room. I'll add my voice to the chorus of folks saying how great it was to meet everybody, and how wonderful the singing and playing were...just truly grand. My god, you all can SING!! Everyone was so welcoming and warm, mudcatters and non-mudcatters alike, and the music was stellar. I told Susan A-R that she needs to get down to Portsmouth on Friday night every now and then for a great time.It was definitely the highlight of my two weeks out east. And then I got to hear Roll & Go sing on Saturday night at the Chocolate Church in Bath. That was a real treat. For all that Brett and Charley joked about wearing their voices out on Friday night, they and the other folks in the group were in fine form. It was a great concert, and Castlebay wasn't half bad either! I can hardly wait for the day when I move back to Vermont and can come visit New Hampshire and Maine more often.... Beth |
