Subject: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: Clinton Hammond Date: 27 Sep 01 - 01:42 PM This is killing me... Living this close to Detroit, downtown Windsor has had a harsh lesson dropped on us... It's become painfully apparent how over-reliant we are on the influx of US money on the weekends... the casino here is laying off, the bars/pubs are empty... and what hurts me the most.. gigs are being cancelled left right and centre... I think I'm after losing 4 already this month.... If this keeps up, -I'm- gonna need a benefit! |

Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: MMario Date: 27 Sep 01 - 01:46 PM Not unexpected at all Clinton - most people realized that this sort of thing would occur. The event sept 11th effected the world in many ways. |

Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: SINSULL Date: 27 Sep 01 - 01:55 PM Broadway shows are cutting their salaries by 25% WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE UNION just to stay open. Restaurants are suffering. No one here feels like going out and those who do think twice about travelling on the subway (chemical attacks?) or fighting traffic (check points at all major closings). This brings to mind a conversation I had with a friend about a week ago. I said that when Kosovo was bombed, women had to make a life or death decision about whether or not to risk a walk on a street to get a loaf of bread for their hungry children. With the threat of war, Afghan families are taking to the hills for safety. In contrast, here in the Americas, even with 6000 dead,we bemoan the late start of the football season and the inconvenience of getting to our favorite restaurants. We are essentially safe with all our toys around us - just a bit warier. Imagine how the people of Kosovo and Afghanistan must wonder at our shallowness. |

Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: Clinton Hammond Date: 27 Sep 01 - 02:13 PM shallowness?!?!?!?! I doubt it... I keep loosing gigs like this, I'll be living outside... this sucks huge! I knew I didn't want to live in a damn border town... Hey Rick... make room... I'm moving back to Canada!!! |
|
Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: Mudlark Date: 27 Sep 01 - 02:27 PM I think insular is closer to the mark than shallow. And pain is pain. It's one thing to miss a football game and quite another to have your livelihood threatened. There is truth in the old saw about fretting about no shoes until meeting someone with no feet....but going shoeless in the winter in Michigan is no picnic! Good luck, Clinton....hopefully we will get back to a more normal, if still wary, times soon. Nancy |

Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: Clinton Hammond Date: 27 Sep 01 - 02:28 PM Thanks nancy... Keep yer eyes pealed... there may end up being an online yard sale on my web site soon.... |

Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: Amos Date: 27 Sep 01 - 06:59 PM Clinton, You are an incurable, intransigent grump curmudgeonly grouch, but you're too smart to hole up in a border town like a lame-brained rustler and watch the world go. And I like my curmudgeons a little on the intransigent side. Break outta there man!! Head for the bright lights!! Back to the West Village with you. I hear there are some great loft deals in SOHO... Good luck, flourish and prosper. Probably make you into a gent!! Regards, A |

Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: Clinton Hammond Date: 27 Sep 01 - 07:38 PM A Gent?!?!? That's insulting!! LOL!! There's the possibility of a move in the next 3-5 years depending on where the wife is working... for now, I'm kinda stuck down here... and well, I'm not good at anything besides music.... |

Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: katlaughing Date: 27 Sep 01 - 07:53 PM What about the chain-mail jewellry? You are exceptional at that, judging from your website pix. I am sorry this has happened, for you and all other performing artists. I do think things will shift in a few weeks and it will pick back up. People like to party to forget the woes of the world even in dire times. Hang in there and good luck! kat |

Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: SINSULL Date: 27 Sep 01 - 07:53 PM Clinton, Sorry. I didn't mean to belittle your situation. Just musing in general. If you want to come to NY, I have a great apartment for sale - woodburning fireplace, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, formal dining room, parquet floors, and six cats. The WTC disaster seems to have ended any chance I have of selling this place. I may actually have to start looking for work! All the subtle little changes in everyday life are adding up to a major pain in the ass. But I and mine are alive. Babbling again...sorry. |

Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: Troll Date: 27 Sep 01 - 10:22 PM Hang in there Clinton. Things will get better. It'll just take time. Goodbye porkchops, hello ramen noodles. **BG** troll |

Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: Clinton Hammond Date: 27 Sep 01 - 11:59 PM Sinsull... sounds like a GREAT place, but I can promise you, -I- am not the New York type... Wanna move yer appartment to say, Calgary?? LOL!!! Katlaugh... the jewellery thing is sorta a bit of a side line... It moves, but not very quickly... Troll... Noodles?!?!?! Who can afford noodles?!?! LOL!!! |
|
Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: katlaughing Date: 28 Sep 01 - 12:19 AM Okay, so we all send care packages to you, HOLD the noodles, send the beans, Spaw will like that, and that'll keep ya going, eh? Seriously, have you thought of putting the jewellry up in your store at eBay? I have a friend who supports himself selling collectibles on there and through acting bits. Does well enough to have bought a house a few years ago and is comfortable. All the best, kat |

Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: Clinton Hammond Date: 28 Sep 01 - 11:47 AM I have though about the ebay thing, but have shied away for fear of being flooded with more orders than I could handle and then getting the reputation as a lousy online businessman... Ya gotta know your limits eh... My maille will be available at dragonshearth.com when and if they ever get the site up and running... :-) |

Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: Amos Date: 28 Sep 01 - 11:50 AM Man, the wrong approach is not to promote. Promoite your ass off!! If you get too much business then you shift gears and scramble around finding ways to increase delivery, sending pleasant and friendly communications to your customers in the meanwhile (I know you know how to be pleasant and friendly, stop pretendintg you don't!). If you think the market's there, drum that sucker up and make some dough!! A. |
|
Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: Clinton Hammond Date: 28 Sep 01 - 11:54 AM I appreciate the enthusiasm Amos, but you've no idea how many cyber-maille business's I've seen flash and burn like that... |

Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: M.Ted Date: 28 Sep 01 - 12:07 PM Everything will pick up again in a little while--it is just that everyone is responding to the same thing at the same time, something that nearly never happens--Sinsull, after the shock wears off, the Locusts will descend, and the remains of the WTC will become a more of a tourist destination than the WTC was intact--As for Windsor, it has been observed that Americans can only sit still for so long, and after a couple weeks of hiding out in the family room and watching news videos of the rubble, people will hit the road in droves, and resuming their national habit of throwing money at anything in their path-- |

Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: Clinton Hammond Date: 28 Sep 01 - 12:26 PM What path is that M.Ted? I wanna make sure I'm standing well in it!!! :-) |

Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: Grab Date: 28 Sep 01 - 01:34 PM Ouch. Good luck with that, Clinton. Having said that, the Detroiters will sit tight for a few weeks, then suddenly they'll realise suddenly they've got all this spare cash from not having gone out... I guess that's what you get from living in "Sin City" though. ;-) Graham. |
|
Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: Clinton Hammond Date: 28 Sep 01 - 01:38 PM I suppose so eh Graham... thanks fer the support mate! Hopefully things will have improved by the time you come back this way! Maybe next time, you can come over on a night when I have the night off, and we can skull a few pints together eh! ;-) |
|
Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: M.Ted Date: 28 Sep 01 - 02:45 PM Clinton, Finding the path is a bit like surfing--you have to have a sense of when the next wave is on the way. There is some instinctive "greed gene" that helps certain individuals to find that path, and, unfortunately, if my life is an indication, I don't have it at all. If you haven't got it, the best you can hope for it to spot someone who does and hope that you get to it before it passes over-- |

Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: M.Ted Date: 29 Sep 01 - 03:15 AM After years of living on fallbacks, I can fix a better dinner for cheap than I could if I spent a lot of money--I admit this is theoretical, as I have never had the opportunity to spend a lot of money-- |

Subject: RE: Unexpected Fallout Re: Sept 11th From: katlaughing Date: 30 Sep 01 - 12:39 AM Okay, so I understand about not wanting to be inundated and fall flat on delivering. On eBay, you can offer one auction of several of the same thing, i.e. chainmail bracelets or whathaveyou, so you post that you have five and no more after they sell. You can set a reserve price so you don't lose money, but start the bidding low because people like the action, then see how it goes. I bought my ten string plucked pasltery from a granddad who does that. He started making them for his grandkids, then decided to put them on eBay. He usually just does one at a time, but he always has one on there and they always sell well. It's a thought at least.:-) kat |
