Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: 53 Date: 12 Oct 01 - 10:25 PM do they play guitar? bob. |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: GUEST,Ewan McVicar Date: 13 Oct 01 - 10:05 AM Another one of those wide open questions that would take a day of typing to respond to. I thought the video taext explained who was who and what was what? The Eskimos were a group of singers / songwriters protesting about US nuclear subs being based just upriver from Glasgow in 1960+. The show commemorating them had those named above in it, plus me and plenty more. Jimmy Ross was the only one of us with half a claim to be called one of the Eskimos. Most of the Eskimos are dead, but Nigel is in Birmingham, Jim is in London, and Jackie may still be with us. Josh and Hamish and Morris are sadly missed. |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: Mac Tattie Date: 13 Oct 01 - 10:20 AM For info on Bob Blair go to www.folkmusic.net and The Tradition Bearers. Bob has a CD out on Tradition Bearers LTCD1001 available from The Living Tradition magazine. cheers. |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: 53 Date: 13 Oct 01 - 10:38 AM yeah, but do they play guitar? bob. |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: Mac Tattie Date: 13 Oct 01 - 06:31 PM 53, Ian Davison plays guitar and Bob Blair plays guitar, beter still Bob Blair plays concertina !!! cheers. |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: 53 Date: 14 Oct 01 - 11:35 AM thank you. bob |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: GUEST,Ewan McVicar Date: 14 Oct 01 - 05:05 PM Hamish and Josh played guitar. Guitar was the only instrument played in them days, except Josh and Archie Fisher had been known to strum upon a banjo on occasion. Bobby Campbell was the only folk fiddler in Scotland at the time. Ah, happy days. Why do you want to know, anyway? |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: Snuffy Date: 14 Oct 01 - 07:25 PM He's been asking that on almost every thread recently - see Llanstock etc |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: Susanne (skw) Date: 14 Oct 01 - 08:21 PM For no particular reason, Ewan! Just like to know. Who else would you count among the Eskimos, apart from the ones mentioned above? (Plus, who is Jackie again?) I'd like to know more about Geordie MacIntyre (sp?). The 'Glasgow Eskimos' show was the only time I ever saw him; before that I'd only come across his name as the author of the odd song (Travelling Rhythm, mainly) but have since learned that he was active behind the scenes collecting and also seems to be doing more gigs again (having retired from his day job, maybe?). Also, I've heard he's married to harpist Alison Kinnaird. |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: Susanne (skw) Date: 14 Oct 01 - 08:25 PM Sorry, I think I replied to a question Ewan hadn't asked! |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: 53 Date: 14 Oct 01 - 11:58 PM what type of guitars do they play? |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: GUEST,Ewan McVicar Date: 15 Oct 01 - 12:53 PM Suzanne 53 is clearly a computer programme trying to pass for a human conversationalist. Eskimos - Jackie O'Connor, Jim Maclean, Hamish Imlach, Morris Blythman, Josh Macrae, Nigel Denver, plus outliers like Shiela Macrae Matt McGinn, Jimmy Ross. Geordie McIntyre lives in Dunblane, in variable health, with his wife Alison McMorland, ballad singer. His song Cloudberry Day was being sought on Mudcat just the other week. Alison Kinnaird is married to Robin Morton of Temple Records etc. |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: 53 Date: 15 Oct 01 - 02:17 PM 53 is a human and one who just likes to ask questions, and sometimes will get the right answer. bob |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: Susanne (skw) Date: 15 Oct 01 - 07:49 PM Ewan, no one can beat the expert! Thanks a lot (not least for putting me straight on the difference between Alisons Kinnaird and McMorland! Blush!) However, I thought you'd been an Eskimo yourself, and Adam McNaughtan as well. Seems the show was a little misleading at times ... Bob, may I suggest you start a new thread for what is clearly your central interest in life? Along the lines of "What happened to ...?" you could name it "What guitar does ... play?" Should work a treat! |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: GUEST,Moleskin Joe Date: 16 Oct 01 - 09:04 AM Is this video commercially available? I would very much like to see it. I have the old Ding Dong Dollar record, used to play in the same football team as Ian Davison, and live 200 yards from where the Broomhill Bums used to reside. Good Luck. Ian M. |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: Scabby Douglas Date: 16 Oct 01 - 10:04 AM RE: Ian Davison's football team - would that be the one he wrote about as (I think) the Wanderin' Wearies? He sang a song with a title somthing like that at a St Andrew's Square session recently.. Cheers Steven |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: GUEST Date: 16 Oct 01 - 10:18 AM Scabby, I don't know about the Wanderin' Wearies, the team we both played for back in the sixties was Rutherglen Academy FP. Fraz Bruce, whom you may know, played in it as well. Ian M. |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: Susanne (skw) Date: 16 Oct 01 - 07:56 PM Joe, I don't know about the video being commercially available, but I could put you in touch with the man who made it. Just eMail me at skw@worldmusc de. If you have the Ding Dong Dollar album - could you help me sort out who sings what? There isn't much info on it, and I'm a bit confused. |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: GUEST,Roger Date: 16 Oct 01 - 08:01 PM Is that THE Ewan MacVicar? Any information on Hamish Imlach gratefully received. Broomhill Bums? can you tell me more about them, Joe? (I'm from Jordanhill, just hoping that doesn't make me a jobby. ) Roger |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: GUEST,Moleskin Joe Date: 17 Oct 01 - 05:54 AM Susanne,I tried to e-mail you but couldn't get through. When I get home from work tonight I will listen to the record and try to identify some of the singers. Unfortunately I don't have the accompanying booklet. Do you know who the people are on the cover? I think I recognise Hamish Imlach, Josh Macrae, Matt McGinn, Joe Gordon and Gordeanna MacCulloch(?). Roger, you can find out about the Broomhill Bums in HI's autobiography but basically HI and others lived in a big house in Broomhill which has since been knocked down to make way for the high flats at the top of Broomhill Drive. In any case all questions relating to HI and/or the Glasgow Eskimos are far more likely to be answered by Ewan MacVicar whose knowledge of these matters is encyclopaedic. Ian M. |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: GUEST,Roger Date: 17 Oct 01 - 06:40 PM Thanks for that Joe. I'll look that up. |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: Susanne (skw) Date: 18 Oct 01 - 07:54 PM Joe, small wonder your mail didn't get through as I badly misspelled my eMail address. It's skw at worldmusic.de. More mistakes: The album I've got is called "Scottish Republican Songs" (XTRA 1088), no artists or authors given. I picked it up second-hand, with no booklet in sight. The tracklist is Ding Dong Dollar I Shall Not Be Moved We Dinna Want Polaris The Polis of Argyll Paper Hankies Ye'll No Sit Here Anti-Polaris The Misguided Missile and the Midguided Miss Coronation Coronach NAB for Royalty They Say That We've Never Had It So Good Camp in the Country The Glesca Eskimos The cover photo (going by the banner displayed) is from the 'All British March Faslane to London', on the back there is a photo of a demonstrator (might actually be Jimmy Ross, by the looks of him) and police. The Freedom Come-All-Ye Ban Polaris - Hallelujah |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: GUEST,Ewan McVicar Date: 19 Oct 01 - 04:30 AM The Joe Gordon lookalike in the photie was in fact Jackie O'Connor. Don't know who the woman was, but not I think Gordeanna. And as far as I know Matt McGinn was never on a Faslane demo. He's not on that cover. The names I give above all are, I'm fairly sure. I may not be the Ewan McVicar, but I'm the only one I know. Susanne, the listing suggests you have a Nat Joseph release of the Folkways album. Never knew there was one! Nat would not have bothered with a booklet, of course. |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: Susanne (skw) Date: 19 Oct 01 - 07:14 PM Ewan, do YOU have the booklet ... ? |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 24 Jul 02 - 08:00 PM Jim McLean wrote at another thread:When we were writing Ding Dong Dollar, we called ourselves The Glesca Eskimos because some protesters challenged a sub at Faslane in a canoe!!" |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: GUEST,Jim McLean Date: 24 Jul 02 - 08:09 PM The faces on the cover of the Folkways LP of Ding Dong Dollar are Morris Blythman (half hidden), Josh MacRae with guitar, Jackie O'Connor with the bow tie, Jim Mclean (next to the CND banner) Nigel Denver with the small beard, Hamish Imlach as an onlooker wi' the bunnet and Jacky Keir to the right with a beard. Trust me I was there, Cheers, Jim Mclean |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: GUEST,Jim McLean Date: 24 Jul 02 - 08:16 PM I've just been reading some old comments and would like to clarify that Matt McGinn was never an Eskimo. He came to that scene a little bit later on. The woman on the sleeve (with the headscarf) was Marion Blythman, Morris's wife, a great person in her own right. I have both nat Joseph's release and the original Folkways LP FD 5444. Cheers, Jim McLean |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: GUEST,Nick Date: 24 Jul 02 - 10:28 PM Thanks for that information, Jim. I was just about to email you about who's who on the cover. I wonder if you know anything about Jimmy Ross? I have Eskimo Republic Glasgow video and he's very prominent in the show, but I've been unable to find any infomation about him. Also, is his picture on the back cover of the Scottish Republican--Ding-Dong re-issue? Nick

Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: GUEST,andymac Date: 25 Jul 02 - 09:26 AM A great thread. I was at the Eskimo Republic gig, what a night it was! I have a tape recording, but I know nothing of a video. I know that Geordie McIntyre had a copy but lost it, is it available anywhere? In response to Suzanne; Geordie, as Ewan said, is living in Dunblane now (recently in fine health), married to Alison McMorland and they recently released a CD, with Alison's daughter, Kirsty Potts, (also a fine singer) on the Living Tradition label which was called "Rowan in the Rock". And no, I'm not his agent! And if anyone can tell me more on the re-release of "Ding-Dong Dollar" it would fair make me chuffed |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: Susanne (skw) Date: 25 Jul 02 - 04:15 PM Andymac - pity we didn't meet! I actually saw the show twice because I got friendly with one of the stewards and he smuggled me into the second show (I paid for the first one, of course). I got the distinct impression it was a very emotional occasion for a lot of the grey-haired people sitting around me in their Sunday best, adorned with discreet little CND badges ... Made me feel really at home! If you are really interested in the video, mail me at skw at worldmusic.de (or better still, become a member and send me a PM!) and I'll give you Larry's address. I've started a new thread on the Ding Dong Dollar album because all the info there is seems to get buried in other threads. |
Subject: RE: Glasgow Eskimos From: GUEST,Jim McLean Date: 25 Jul 02 - 05:48 PM I've just posted a lot of information for Susanne on the Ding Dong Dollar thread. Let me assure you that Matt McGinn was never involved until much later neither was Jimmy Ross. The picture was taken aboard the ferry going to Dunoon from Glasgow for a demo. George McIntyre was an old friend of mine who actually took me to the folk club at the Trongate in 1959 and bears the resposibility (blame) of me writing folk songs. Anybody got an address for him as I've lost touch. Gordon McCulloch who, I believe, was responsible for the Glesga Eskimo show/video? was also not involved at the beginning. We (Josh MacRae, Nigel Denver, Jack O'Connor)all used to meet in Morris Blythman's house, as Ewan McVicar quite rightly knows, and write and play and drink GlenGrant malt whisky! Archie and Rae Fisher (great singers) would be there sometimes but were never involved in polital songs. Jim Mclean |
