Subject: Name my new kitten? From: Morticia Date: 15 Oct 01 - 05:41 AM So, we got a foundling kitten from Bron at the weekend ( Llanstock 2).She found her on a rubbish tip and christened her Harry as the tip was called Potter's.However, when we got her her home we found we had trouble referring to her as Harry and worried she might get gender confusion. She is very tiny, tortoishell and grubby white ( she will insist on playing in the coal scuttle) and still has blue eyes.Any ideas before I take her to the vet for a check up and have to confess that she is un-named? |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: KingBrilliant Date: 15 Oct 01 - 06:14 AM Ramekin's a brilliant name!!! Morticia you're right about the gender confusion problem. Hammerite's kittens are called Pots (Potsy) and Pans (Pansy). And despite the fact that Pots is tortoiseshell (all torts are female) and Pans is a failed ginger (most gingers are male) - we still managed to call the girl Potsy and the boy Pansy! It has had terrible effects. Poor Pansy is a complete wimp. While Potsy is a tom-boy, or would that be tom-tom? Anyways - my vote goes to Ramekin. Kris |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Bert Date: 15 Oct 01 - 10:37 AM You can't name a cat properly without seeing it, if she plays in the coal scuttle, you might try Smudge or Coal'ole if they fit. Our cats are named Millennium, M&m and Tweedle Dummer. Each of them firmly refuses to answer to any name other than 'Here kitty, kitty, kitty'. When we had three dogs as well, the cats would also answer to any of the dog's names, as would the other two dogs, who also would answer to 'Here kitty, kitty, kitty'. |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: The_one_and_only_Dai Date: 15 Oct 01 - 10:42 AM Never was a truer word spoken. Old Jethro would answer to ANYTHING one said with a similar cadence, such as 'scumbag', 'ratface' or 'abscess'. My current cat arrived with the name of 'Molly' and only responds to high-pitched squeaks. |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Micca Date: 15 Oct 01 - 10:56 AM Bearing in mind the household in which she now resides, how about Mus (pronounced Muss to rhyme with Puss) as in Mus-cat de Beaume de Venise? because it is sweet and gives a little wine every now and then? |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 15 Oct 01 - 11:31 AM I'm not a cat person but... My sister-in -law got a pair of sibling kittens and my nephews wanted to name them. They opted for Sharon and Tracy as they lived in Essex, but unfortunately these were the names of one of their neighbour's daughters so it was thought tactless so they came up with Black and Decker as one wasn't all black. Unfortunately, Black soon went to the great roadkill in the sky so everyone is puzzled how Decker got her name! RtS |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Trevor Date: 15 Oct 01 - 11:34 AM I read somewhere that because kitties respond best to high pitched noises ('cos that's the kind of noise their prey makes) the best names for them have an 's' sound in them (eg Puss). So how about 'Ssssod off', or 'Sssuffering whatever that other word is in the cartoon', or Ssylvesster. Despite this, best name I heard for a cat was 'Edie' - get it? |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: mooman Date: 15 Oct 01 - 11:38 AM How about "Kitspaw"? mooman |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Oct 01 - 11:56 AM Kitspaw? Anyway.......I think they are all born with a piece of genetic information which allows all of them to understand one word....."Kitty." Like a dumbass, I figured an English cat ought to genetically respond to "Moggy" and since that isn't in common usage here, the cat would have a unique name AND respond to it. Dubious logic I admit, based on a piss por premise. So I name our Cornish Rex Moggy. Not only doesn't he respond well to Moggy (or kitty-kitty), he doesn't respond well to anything! He is in a complete daze most of the time, staring off into space, and spends the rest of his time trying to find the warmest place to sleep. He gets his full share BTW.....at least 18 hours a day. Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: katlaughing Date: 15 Oct 01 - 12:29 PM Mortee, so glad you have her now!! Good for you! I had a little black female who used to get into everything as a kitten. I threatened to make her into Chop Suey and that instantly became her name. She turned into a very beautiful, matronly cat, but it still fit. Not only do they like the sibilance of esses, but also they seem to like "K's", so I singsong Kipling and it comes out Kip-a-ling-ling which he loves and Kelpie, which she loves. How about Mudpuddle? Kirke's Garde? Oh, one of my favourites was a calico I had whom I name Najuni, the j is soft, almost like an "sh." If I remember right it meant cat it Japanese or was just a name I liked.:-) I always thought Mariko from Shogun was a pretty name for a cat. I have a friend named that and she goes by the nickname "Mako" like the small sharks. How about MakoMudKat? LOL!! luvyakat |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: PeteBoom Date: 15 Oct 01 - 01:37 PM I agree with Snuffy - sticking with Harry as a diminutive of Harriette would work. OF course, around my abode, most cats are called "dog food" - at least as far as Rosie is concerned... (not that she's ever EATEN one. Grab, shake and throw over the 6 foot fence, absolutely - Eat? A friend just got a kitten and named it Onion, after hearing someone boast of his new cat named Artichoke. Another friend has a huge old Tom cat (20 lbs) named Percy. My childhood cat was named FurryPurry. A later one was named Freezer, because she would begin a deep purr that reminded us of the whirring sound the Freezer made when its motor would kick in. |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: GUEST,MudWeasel Date: 15 Oct 01 - 05:21 PM Sorry Jack, but I have to disagree. Unless you have written consent from the cat in question, you should NEVER capo a cat. It'll just piss the cat off, and lead to serious blood loss on your part. (Not unlike capo-ing a guitar into C# pisses off the fiddle player.) If you truly need to raise the pitch of your cat, I suggest helium. It's difficutl to pronounce, but I suggest you name the kitten "Kskskskrshrk" which is the sound a tin of catfood makes when you open it up. This is a sure way to make the cat come when called. -MudWeasel PS Paul from Hull. Capo-ing would raise the tone. If you wanted to lower the tone, you'd have to call the cat DADGAD. |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: GUEST,MudWeasel Date: 15 Oct 01 - 07:36 PM Well, another music question that I can answer! Step it out Mary is a trad. ballad set in (Ireland I think). There's a slightly Americanized version called Step It Out Nancy, with a twist ending: The rich suitor upon find out he has competition, shoots said competition (a cowboy rather than a soldier in this version). Nancy shows up to the wedding with a heavy pistol and terminates the wealthy Bridegroom, for which the 12 good men of the jury refuse to convict her. Trust the Yanks to put a happy(?) ending on a good tragedy... Now's the time for Gargoyle to poke his head in and chew me out for discussing traditional music on a BS thread... Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 15 Oct 01 - 09:03 PM THE NAMING OF CATS from the musical "CATS" music by Andrew LLoyd Webber words based on poems of T.S. Eliott The naming of cats is a difficult matter It isn't just one of your holiday games You may think at first I'm mad as a hatter When I tell you a cat must have three different names First of all, there's the name that the family use daily Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey All of them are sensible, everyday names But I tell you a cat needs a name that's particular A name that's peculiar and more dignified Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular? Or spread out his whiskers or cherish his pride? Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo or Coricopat Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum Names that never belong to more than one cat But above and beyond there's still one name left over And that is the name that you will never guess The name that no human research can discover But the cat himself knows and will never confess When you notice a cat in profound meditation The reason, I tell you, is always the same His mind is engaged in rapt contemplation Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name His ineffable, effable, effanineffable Deep and inscrutable singular name Name, name, name, name, name, name

From: Arnie Date: 16 Oct 01 - 07:13 AM This thread has attracted more hits than any other which says something about Mudcatters - maybe there's a link between people who like folk music and cat-lovers? Anyway, I got a female kitten last year from the local cat santuary and called her Meg, as I like the idea of referring to her as Meg the Mog! However, it seems to me that only the rattle of her Friskies hitting the food bowl will get her attention so any name is really only for my convenience - I couldn't just keep calling her 'the kitten'! My previous moggy was called 'Raggerty' which I nicked from a female folk duo who used to perform in the South East in the '70's - wonder what happened to them? |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Lyrical Lady Date: 16 Oct 01 - 12:19 PM My cat's name is Meeow-zer! He came to me as a wild tom and he is a BIG boy! I named him meeow-zer because of his very mournful and LOUD roar. I had him "fixed" and now he squeaks like a little kitten ... now I call him meow-meow! Poor thing! LL |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 16 Oct 01 - 04:59 PM That could be a bit awkward, standing in the garden in a Military town shouting 'Cletoris'..... specially if she has a small pink nose..... LTS |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: GUEST,Claymore Date: 17 Oct 01 - 05:16 PM You could pass on a proud name from a noble member of his species; Genghis Khat, Mouse Murderer of the First Water, Nettle Flayer of Dogs, Reducer of the Avian, and Ruler of the Upper Barn of Equine, who reigned from 1979 to 1992 in Little Britain, Virginia. At 28 pounds, and blacker than your last breath, when he patrolled the barn, the Rottweiler followed in trace, and the crickets stopped chirping... |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Steve in Idaho Date: 17 Oct 01 - 06:01 PM Cletoris!!!! Oh Lord - about choked!! Then you could get Cletus to come down and breed it - teach it all kinds of nasty tricks - Steve |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: SharonA Date: 17 Oct 01 - 07:15 PM Haven't had a chance to read the whole thread, so maybe this was suggested already, but... Your mention of the kitten playing in the coal scuttle brought to mind Silas Marner and the foundling child Eppie: remember when he tried to punish her by shutting her in the coal hole, and she came out covered with soot and thinking it was a great game ("Eppie in de toal hole")? So my submission for a sooty foundling-kitten's name is Eppie (as I recall, in the story, it was short for Hepzibah). |

From: Snuffy Date: 19 Oct 01 - 08:34 AM Firecat, the codes are auml ouml uuml for small or Auml Ouml and Uuml for capital letters - in each case you put an 'and' sign (&) in front and a semi colon at the end with no spaces. ä ö ü Ä Ö Ü Or you could just write ae, oe or ue instead -Kaetzchen WassaiL! Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: MudGuard Date: 19 Oct 01 - 08:54 AM Or do it the easy way, just use the ä-key on your keyboard as I use it on mine, or the ö-key or the ü-key. They also work with Shift and then give ÄÖÜ instead of äöü ;-) |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Snuffy Date: 19 Oct 01 - 09:28 AM We don't have ä, ö or ü keys on a British keyboard, Andreas. Where are they on a German keyboard? WassaiL! V |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: CharlieA Date: 20 Oct 01 - 07:26 AM Well our cat is called Malcolm (he's black my housemates sister named him after Malcolm X) but he's known to us as Fiend. Another of the cats i've known is called Death Magic but the grandmother gets upset if you use her full name rather than Magic. My parents old cat was named Snuck cos she snuck in and adopted them. Loki is a good name for a cat. Cxxx |
