I am searching for the lyrics to the Bothy Band's song 16 Come Next Sunday...did net search, checked database, did an old forum search (thank you Wolfgang!) and am empty-handed. Any help? It's from a 1982 release...

From: Barry Finn

See "A Waukrife Minnie", it seems Burns collected a version of this, also know as '17 Come Sunday, My Pretty Little Miss, How Old Are You.

How old are you my pretty little miss
How old are you my honey
If I don't die of a broken heart
I'll be 16 next Sunday

Can you court my pretty little miss
Can you court my flower
I can court more in a minute & a half
Than you can in an hour

Will you marry me my pretty little miss
Will you marry me good looking
I'll mary you but I won't do
Your washing or your cooking

I think you'd be lookng for one that had a verse that goes something like;

Her shoes were black her stockings white
Her buckles shone like silver
She had a dark & a roving eye
And her hair hung round her shoulder

don't have that one any more, but I'm sure others here will see you through. Barry

Here's the Bothy Band Lyrics:

As I went down yon heathery moor,
I met a bonnie wee lassie,
She winked at me and passed me by,
And oh but she was handsome,

With me twatikan notikan nuntin ni
With me twatikan notikan ni do (THIS IS VERY PHONETIC!!)

Where are you going my bonnie wee lass
Where are ye going my honey
Quite mannerly she answered me,
"On a message for me mammy"

Oh what's your age me bonnie wee lass
Oh what's your age me honey
Quite mannerly she answered me
"I'll be 16 come next Sunday"

Oh where do ye live my bonnie wee lass
Oh where do you live my honey
Quite mannerly she answered me
"Oh down in yon green valley"

Oh where do you lie me bonnie wee lass
Oh where do you lie me honey
Quite mannerly she answered me
"In a bed behind me mammy"

Will ye marry me my bonnie wee lass
Will ye marry me my honey
Quite mannerly she answered me
"Will ye wait till I ask me mammy"

If I go down tomorrow night
When the moon is shining clearly
Will ye open the door and let me in
And your mammy she won't hear me

As went down to the house
Her mammy chanced to hear me
She pulled her daughter by the hair
And hit her three times over

Triona Ni/ Dhomhnaill collected this from her Aunt who lives in the Donegal Gaeltacht of Rannafast(?)

(Laws) O17 turns up 2 versions in DT. Does anyone know of an older version than "The Waukrife Minnie"?
Here's something usually not seen where Burns' version is given.
Cromek's 'Remains of Nithsdale and Galloway Song', 1810, 1880, has a song "Oh who is this under my window'. The 1st half of the headnote is:

This old song is taken down from the singing of Martha Crosbie, from whose recitation Burns wrote down the song of "The Waukrife Minnie".

But, how, then did the editor of 'The Scots Musical Museum' get the tune?

The old folks in the Southern Appalachians used to sing a ballad which some called GYPSY DAVEY, some called BLACKJACK DAVEY, and others called THE GYPS OF DAVID, which contained nearly all the verses here. I believe that BlackJack Davey is in DT.

SIXTEEN COME NEXT SUNDAY

As I went down yon heathery moor
I met a bonnie wee lassie
She winked at me and passed me by
And oh but she was handsome

Chorus
With my twatigan-atakin antin aye
With my twatigan-atakin aye do

"Where are you goin' my bonnie wee lass?"
"Where are you goin' my honey?"
Quite mannerly she answered me
"On a message for me mammy"

"Oh what's your age my bonnie wee lass?"
"Oh what's your age my honey?"
Quite mannerly she answered me
"I'll be sixteen come next Sunday"

"Oh where do you live my bonnie wee lass?"
"Oh where do you live my honey?"
Quite mannerly she answered me
"Away down in yon green valley"

"Oh where do you lie my bonnie wee lass?"
"Oh where do you lie my honey?"
Quite mannerly she answered me
"In the bed behind me mammy"

"Will you marry me my bonny wee lass?"
"Will you marry me my honey"
Quite mannerly she answered me
"Will ye wait 'till ask me mammy?"

"If you go down the morrow night
When the moon will be shining clearly
Will ye open the door and let me in
And your mammy she won't hear me?"

As I went down to her house
Her mammy chanced to hear me,
She pulled her daughter by hair
And she hit her three times over
