Beverley is in East Yorkshire,(7 miles north of Hull)
34 people were at Llanstock
When do we have to decide wich hostel to book?
Could we see how many people are going & then book the most suitable hostel size wise? Or does it have to be booked soon?

Can you smoke in youth hostels? It may seem like a small detail but I think out of all the Yorkshire Catters there is only Ickle Dorrit & Sam Pirt that don't smoke!

Most , if not all , Youth Hostels are non-smoking and they do not allow pets either

There would have been 36 at Llanstock if Manitas and Gervase hadn't had gigs, and did you remember to count the children??

I'd actually prefer to go somewhere I haven't been, but Beverley is a beautiful town, and there are places to visit nearby for those who don't want to spend all day in the pub, or have children to entertain.

I have found my Rent-a-Hostel booklet for this year ( things are unlikely to have changed too much) and given the criteria that the Hostel should have over 40 beds / allow smoking / have good road access / be close to other ameneties ....... these seem to fit the bill>br>
LINCOLN.....45 beds (2x2, 1x3.2x6, 2x8, 1x10 )10NOV - 26FEB

PETERBOROUGH ......40 beds (6x2 , 4x4 , 2x6 ) 6NOV - 7APR

LANGDALE ........80 beds (recommended) (2x3-4, 8x5-8, 4x11) 29OCT - 28FEB

LLANGOLLEN (COACH HOUSE) .....56 BEDS (5X2, 1X7, 1X10, 1X11, 1X18)1SEPT - 7APR

slightly smaller is

BEVERLEY ......34 beds (1x5, 1x13, 1x16)1Oct - 7APR

Dates will need a slight adjustment for next year but it seems that late Feb / early march could be an option

We appear to be gravitating towards a smaller event.

Beverley is £330 and I will check availability first thing tomorrow. I am sure Beverley would be successful but not quite what was intended initially.

Peterborough is no longer in the Rent a Hostel brochure and Lincoln was initially dismissed as being too small. Would be okay for a smaller party though at £340 and it has separate lounge and dining rooms - useful for singing and music! Weekend booking of these hostels is very popular so if nothing materialises from this attempt I strongly suggest that the info we have now is used to book for 2003 - We should have a greater choice.

Will post again after info on Beverley. Cheers John

Maybe a 'trial run' with a smaller event, as central as poss, then repeat in the future on a larger scale if successful? This doesn't have to be the 'one and only'.

Sorry John, didn't want to undermine your good works - i think because I know Beverley so well, and live five miles away I just think it's the sort of place people would like. Ancient gas lit pubs -walks upon the Westwood the Minster olde tea roomes -Llanstock with attitude! I'm happy with what every one decides.

I think Beverley is nice as well, a lot of pubs there a folk friendly (Nellies, Tap Spile etc).It is only 5 miles from me as well (I live near Ickle Doritt). There is a train station and the bus station is next door to Nellies,(Beverley Folk Club). There are no sheep, but plenty of cows on the Westwood.

I don't think having an event in Beverley changes the original plan for a National gathering its just that at present the take up seems to be too low for booking one of the larger hostels. Straight after Christmas finance is always a problem and if the weekend looks like costing more than £15 a head we would have to say no I think. All previous gatherings have been intended to be for any Mudcatter and I would like to avoid using terms like Northern or Yorkshire gathering.
Thanks for getting all the info Geordie.

I like the idea of Llanstock with attitude, Ickle! Would the Minster olde tea roomes mind us taking it over for a singaround? We did that in Fleetwood when the heavens opened when the Shellbacks were supposed to be singing by the lifeboat- the owner and staff were bemused to say the least!

Jane, bearing in mind that this thread was only put up two days ago, I don't think we can really make any judgements yet as to take up- people may well be going away and thinking about it, or not have seen the thread yet. Word will spread... and I agree with what you say about naming the gathering. Inclusive raher than exclusive, wherever it's held; lumpers not splitters!

Actually the chap who owns the minster tea rooms is an aquaintance of mine so I might be able to negotiate a singaround there!

I hope this won't be too early in the New Year....apart from the expense of Chrimbo and New Year at Whitby the weather can be chill, and the roads icy in January!...in any case I have a first grandchild due about then so really need to be close to home !!! so if it's January then for me it must be Beverley!!

At the present time Beverley will be CLOSED over the winter/early spring so Rent a hostel not available as yet.

As a back stop I have recorded interest in Beverley and there may be a good choice of dates up to early April if Rent a Hostel becomes available.Watch this space.

Interestingly Beverley was my first choice. Absolutely perfect for a smaller group although not really central!

Other smaller hostels do not have large enough/separate common areas so we are left with Langdale or Llangollen.

Llangollen is easier to get to from the North and East than Llanfair but about ten miles further from the South. It is however smaller than Langdale (56 rather than 96 beds )so will potentially be quite a bit cheaper.

Langdale is a detached country house in a spectacular setting. Would be idyllic but at £690 for 96 beds we need a good turnout to make it economic.

Only availablity (checked 20 mins ago) is

Langdale 4/5 11/12 and 18/19 Jan Llangollen 4/5 and 11/12 Jan

YHA confirm that they only very rarely get cancellations so this is it as far as I can see for YHA for early 2002. Will do a bit of a summary later today when everything is absorbed. Cheers John.

Numbers: I would have thought that we would be safer with room for 30 to 40 or so, rather than 80+ - at Llanstock some attendees brought their campervans / caravans.
No smoking in YHAs: You can always go outside for a drag or take up snuff, as there in no rule against that!
Location: My vote goes for Beverley, as its reasonably central and its accessible from Europe.
Date: Certainly not in October to rival Llanstock but there is no reason to clash with other events in Jan/Feb/Mar either - so NOT 11/13 Jan Strawbear at Whittlesey, 25/27 Jan Ale & Song at Helmsley, 22/24 Feb Middlebar Singers Reunion at Sidmouth or (for me at least!) 1/3 Mar Morris Ring AGM at Newport and 15/17 Mar Bideford Folk Club at Boscastle YHA!

Sing John Ball and tell it to them all ...!

8 miles north of Hull, which is on the River Humber East of Leeds. But no doubt one of the local Mudcatters will be able to sing its praises better than me.

I agree with alanwww, on all his points exept yhe dates.I think whatever date we pick it will clash with something.I think we should just pick a date before the places get booked up, any date is ok with me, but I know some people get fixed holidays at work (teachers etc).
This is just a sugestion= I think if this this is going to be regular thing, then it would be nice to go to a different place every year eg Wales & england & Scotland.I dont know if they have any youth hostels in Scotland, but if they do it would give Scottish people a chance to go because Wales is to far for them.

Just a reminder so the dates don't get muxed ip, the EuroGathering in Brussels is still on schedule for the 3-6 May 2002. I'll be posting an update on the arrangements for that shortly.

Count me in: I'd like to come wherever it is - I'm as likely to come to a gathering as go to a festival - in fact more likely to be able to blag it with the (large-teenager)-sitters as a "convention" than swanning off to a festival and abandoning the children - oops large-teenagers *G*.

Beverley - Is and indeed always was the best hostel for a small gathering if you live within easy reach of Hull.

At the present time it is not available to anyone.I have recorded interest should the situation change.

Langdale - A wonderful location in which specific interest has been expressed by several but in view of it's size 46 people are needed at £15 per head.

Llangollen - More convenient for the majority of Llanfair attenders than Llanfair itself and a lovely building in a lovely location. At £15 per head we need 28 people - It holds 56.

Geographically the epi-centre of Uk Mudcat seems to be between Sheffield and Worksop should any one insist on going there :0). Looking forward to seeing a proper calculation.

Thus as far as YHA is concerned for early 2002 the siuation is simple!!

Around 50 people attending gives us the OPTION of Langdale otherwise it is LLangollen or nothing other than the possibility of Beverley if the town is open this Winter/Spring. Cheers John

Here, as promised, are a list of UK mudcat members and the counties they live in. When I went to school many years ago I learned the counties of Britain but since then many of them have changed and some have even changed back again, an example is, if you live in Manchester I have still put you down as Lancashire.
As far as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland goes I never did learn the counties and so I have just put members there under Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The reason for this list is because quite a few members have requested information as to who lived near to them. I have been able to make up this list from postings to the threads "How many UK catters" and " UK catters please read." and members I know of personally. I did ask if anyone objected to having their name connected to a county and have only had one objection whose name is not included in this list.
The original reason for these threads was to find where most members lived so as a UK wide gathering could be organized within reasonably easy reach of most members. From the numbers so far it would seem that a gathering somewhere south of Yorkshire but within easy access to either the A1 or M6 would be most central. This gathering would probably take place in the winter after the festival season has finished and during that time when most of us are bored with no musical events to attend.
I am sure that the list is by no means complete and that some people have moved since their postings, so if you are not on the list and would like to be included, or your information is wrong please contact me.
Cheers Bill

We do have hostels in Scotland and a good few of them are available for rent and are of a suitable size AND (if the website is to be believed) are available for early 2002.

This link (sorry can't do blue clickies yet) should prove useful.

http://www.rentahostel.com/pages/syha.htm

As I'm 2 hours from the English border and travel at a sedate pace in my diesel land rover Wales is just way too far away.

Suggest Melrose or New Lanark hostels as worthy of consideration.

Can I just point out that for some who have to travel long distances, it is actually cheaper to come to London - I know Diva found this the case.... but then she had a lift from here to Llanfair - cost was £10 and a bar of chocolate (Micca, you still haven't paid me.....), I let MudGuard off the chocolate because he bought pickles.

Any chance of investigating a few more on the outskirts of London?

Looking at the list of Mudcat UK members it would seem sensible, if we want a good number attending , to make the first gathering in the area which has the most members which is Yorkshire.

well, I'm pretty central to most areas except maybe Scotland, Norwich, and anywhere past Birmingham would mean a bit of a trek...

But got loads of places within a 2 hour radius, but then we can't possibly please EVERYONE who would want to go to a gathering, I reckons it would be near to impossible... but lets see.

Jet pack ready ella!

Dear Mudcat friends and companions
Realism! I think we ought to stop faffing about and go for one of the only two options available - Langdale for 46 or Llangollen for 28 - as suggested by Geordie Broon. We are running out of time and beggers and choosers and all that! ...
Where? My vote would be for Llangollen , as realistically I don't think the extra number of attendees required would be forthcoming. (I would doubt that many from the Midlands and South would be able/willing to travel to Scotland, at least in the winter - sorry, Jock Morris!) But clearly we will have to go with the majority!
When? I think that early February would be better than January, as (selfishly) I already have two weekends away in Jan and, anyway, Jan tends to be a recovery time from the excesses of Christmas, including a lack of money!
Who? What we also need is for someone local to the chosen one to book it and sort out local pubs/venues and camping/caravan hard standing for those who will etc! How about a volunteer?

Kind friends and companions come join me in rhyme
Alan

Llangollen sounds fine, nice one alan. As long as it doesn't clash with the eisteddfod or anything...

But Llangollen is booked up early Feb, Alan! Only the two Jan weekends are free, 4/5 JAN and 11/12 JAN (see GB's first post to this thread) and 11/12 clashes with Whittlesey.

OK then,

Who's up for a Mudcat New Year party, 4/5 Jan 2002 in Llangollen?

Noreen your html is getting better daily. Is this what they teach librarians these days? Count me in for Llangollen then; its easy to reach from Wirral.

If 28 go to Llangollen there will be 10 people in double rooms with remaining 18 spread beween 4 dorms of 7 10 11 and 18 beds Ater Llanstock can we cope with the space.

If hostel is filled (56) then cost halves to £7.50. Cheaper than staying at home.!!

Put me down for 4/5 Jan to clear cobwebs. John

I'm a probable rather than a definite at present, as I would miss mummers on Friday 4 Jan (and I am the Captain of Mummers)! I will have to see if we can get a side without me (and Snuffy and Stantheman?) I would also have to be back in good time for the mummers on 12th night, Sunday 6 Jan.

We're one, two, three jolly boys all in one line ...
Alan
