Subject: Thumb pick From: GUEST,Graham Date: 21 Oct 01 - 07:51 AM I'm not sure if this is the right sort of query to put on this site, but it is related to folk music so here goes. On a trip to Arkansas a few years ago I found a guitar thumb pick that I really like. It can be seen on www.fredkellyspicks.com and is called the Speed Pick. Does anybody please know where I can buy them in the UK or send for them in small quantities? I would need to still be playing the guitar at 120 years old to warrant buying a bag of 24!! I hope somebody can help. Graham |

Subject: RE: Thumb pick From: bill\sables Date: 21 Oct 01 - 08:20 AM Hi Graham I had a look at the website and they seem interesting to try and at $1 (65p UK) reasonably cheep. If you have to buy 25 I, and probably other UK catters would be willing to share with you. I break thumb picks on a regular basis. Cheers Bill |

Subject: RE: Thumb pick From: Eric the Viking Date: 21 Oct 01 - 09:55 AM Bill tells me I should use a thumb pick-it might help my crap playing so I'll have a couple plus postage! If you get a bag, and 125 years might just see me get better at it. |

Subject: RE: Thumb pick From: Llanfair Date: 21 Oct 01 - 05:30 PM I'll have some, too, Graham, please, and your playing certainly is'nt crap, Eric. Cheers, Bron. (the original 3-chord wonder) |

Subject: RE: Thumb pick From: GUEST,Graham Date: 21 Oct 01 - 05:48 PM Thanks for your replies. OK, I'll order a bag of medium picks. Are you all happy to do a 4 way split, (or more if anyone else is interested)? We'll obviously need more direct contact, so you can get my address on the second page of www.greynwhitemusic.co.uk (Plug!!!) Graham

Subject: RE: Thumb pick From: Cap't Bob Date: 21 Oct 01 - 11:03 PM I consider Fred Kelly's "speed pick" the best thumb pick that I've ever tried. The thing I like about them is that they do not slip, are not real tight on the thumb, and they are more sensitive giving you a feel of touching the string. Surprisingly I've never had one break. I have been using them for around fifteen years or thereabouts. Incidentally, I live in Mio, Michigan about thirty miles east of Grayling MI whare the strings are manufactured. Cap't Bob |

Subject: RE: Thumb pick From: GUEST,Graham Date: 22 Oct 01 - 07:20 PM I was thinking of getting medium. I don't know what I bought before, so I thought that was a safe bet. Myself I would not want heavy. What does "pm with your address" mean? Is it some technical term that I'm too thick to understand? If you go back to my second message there's a way of contacting me. I haven't worked out a price yet. I am assuming 6 of us will have 4 each unless I hear otherwise. I think I had better draw the line here before there are too many people and not enough thumb picks. Thank you all for your interest. I assume you won't want any Steve. I dread to think what you might use them for!!! Graham |

Subject: RE: Thumb pick From: GUEST,Graham Date: 26 Oct 01 - 05:32 PM Hello thumbpickers. I've ordered the speed picks. I phoned the USA because I thought that was safer than putting my credit card number in an email. I've worked out that 4 picks, a share of the phone call, a jiffy bag and a stamp come to near enough £4. That's assuming that we're still doing a 6 way split. So could bill/sables Eric the Viking Llanfair Harryoldham sian, west wales please contact me on cd@greynwhitemusic.co.uk so that we can exchange postal addresses. When I hear from everyone I will confirm the price. Graham

Subject: RE: Thumb pick From: Clinton Hammond Date: 27 Oct 01 - 08:44 AM Neat.. I might have to get myself a bag of them to give 'em try... How do they compair to the Herco thumb picks? ;-) |
|
Subject: RE: Thumb pick From: Big Mick Date: 27 Oct 01 - 08:57 AM Clinton, I really like the Herco too. The only problem I have found is that you run through a lot of them because they break at the place where the thumbpick and the wraparound meet. I have found the Kelly picks being discussed here to be a great pick. I love it when I am doing arrangements that require an arpeggio spaced in between strumming. My Guild has so much volume that using the traditional heavy thumb pick is problemsome. Also it is hard to get a smooth chord sound. The Fred Kelly pick resolves this problem due to its material. I probably like the idea of the Herco better, I just got tired of breaking them. Mick |

Could bill/sables and Llanfair please get in touch to confirm or cancel and exchange postal addresses. cd@greynwhitemusic.co.uk Breezy, I had to draw the line at 6 or we wouldn't have had many each. If anybody cancels I'll let you know. Graham |
