I can hope Murray... I can really hope...

Oh ya... add to my list Leonard Cohen as well...

John Prine.. well, he's still alive, and still writing new material... I'd think that makes him contermporary....

Clinton, you really believe anybody will be listening to Ferron in thirty years time?

John Prine's work for sure will live on, like Dylan, Paxton and Simon. But I wouldn't have thought he was "contemporary" in the context of the thread.............

James Keelaghan, Garnet Rogers, Stephen Fearing, Ian Tamblyn, Willie P Bennette, Ferron, The Arrogent Worms, 4th Street, Tom Lewis, Andrew Cash, Steve Earle, (high fives, derrymacash!) Louden W the 3rd, (some to you Robert!)...

John Prine goes without saying... And I call him contemporary...

Todd Snyder... (At least I hoe he's got that staying power...)

I just think that in twenty or thirty years time, people will be hearing a different phase of the tradition...still listening to who are the oldies now but today's contemporary artists will be a part of that...

We need to understand that cultural reference points will chnage and people won't necessarily hear the same things we hear today in the same way, so there's no way to tell...

(I'll still be listening to Tori Amos and passing it through the family in 20-30 years time!!)

My guess is that none of the current crop of contemporary singer-songwriters will be remembered in twenty, thirty years time to anything like the same degree as the artists you name.

I have seen many, many performances by many "name" singer-songwriters, and while I enjoy their performances well enough and will continue to support travelling musicians, there is nobody around today writing memorable songs with memorable melodies in the same way that Paxton, Simon et al did. IMHO

I really was going after the contemporary folk singer songwriters who in twenty or so years we will look back on much the way we now look back on the likes of John Prine, Loudoun Wainwright, Gordon Lightfoot, Hoyt Axton, Tom Waits, Judy Collins, Simon and Garfunkle, Bob Dylan, etc.

I rather think that what Bobert is after is names of artists who write their own material in a "contemporary" style (whatever that may be ), as opposed to those who play traditional music, but just happen to be alive at present. Am I right ?

If that is in fact the case, then I would nominate Jack Williams and Richard Shindell as two of my favorites. I could furnish a much longer list of "contemporary" folk artists whose music I cannot stand.
