Subject: Lee Collinson gig From: Nemesis Date: 29 Apr 02 - 06:07 PM I've thrown caution and club funds to the winds and made my first ever booking(!) of Lee Collinson for our club on Friday 7 June in Worthing Sussex. Fingers crossed that I'll manage to publicise it sufficiently! What the Dickens Open Stage Club at the Charles Dickens pub (real ales) Heene Road Worthing. £4.

There's a lot of subjective hype surrounding so many performers that I tend to yawn and think "Yeah? Right?" but, as someone who's a non-musician and has basically started a club from scratch and had to really get out there and garner interest and research what's going on and who's doing it: from Terrible Floorspot Man to John Renbourn (who's local-ish) I must say Lee was head and shoulders above the rest of them - and I don't believe that is a personal taste issue!! Oh, pur-lease, if Dorking want to come en masse I would be delighted (and financially relieved - this IS Worthing after all!) Or do you mean Dorking Football Club :) ? If only to prove a point to the pub landlord who has stuffed us for a another gig we were trying to arrange as part of our Fringe festival here in Worthing in July. I.e., guitarist Richard Durrant, (youngest member of Sky and local hero) loses out to lots of German Beer that have crept forward a day and obliterated our monthly club that night. I feel a new venue coming on :) So, thanks a very much for your help - hopefully, the Publican will rue the day/after we move on.. Hille :) |

He was absolutely brilliant. Great songs, great presentation and funny, easy delivery and engagement with his /our audience. have seen him on two separarte occasions and he is consistently brilliant. Play guitar like a "loose" Martin Simpson. He does a great version of a song called Driving Wheel by David Wiffen. I was so impressed I order the original album (available in the UK as a CD import). Paid £17 and waited 3 months, only to find that Lee's version is incomparably better than the original! Worked it out for myself and it's now a cornerstone of my repetoire. Don't know the original version, but think Lee's version is stunning: I've both Lee's current CD's - not sure, think he's got another one due out soon(?), although personally "Slip the Driver.." is the one I adore: more guitar (and that's from someone who's promised to shoot herself on a night when there's more than 6 blokes with a guitar doing floorspots - my finger's been twitching on more than one occasion in some clubs) Actually, speaking of blokes and guitars - saw Bob Dylan on Saturday (think I'll start a thread :) |

(I think I gained a clue on Saturday at the BD gig - people (the buying public that is) hear something in "their" era and then just stick with it (very small record collection syndrome) - I mean, I was moaning about the dreadful lack of contemporary music available in Worthing e.g., Abba/Queen tribute bands and the response "Oh, wow! I think I'll go and see that!" (At 15-16 quid a throw - yet the public at large are hard to sell a 4 quid gig to: perhaps I should double the entry price - price equals quality?

Not only do we want to go to see/hear the artists we know and love, we want them to perform our favourite songs and tunes. Its the same at restaurants. I'd bet that most people going to a chinese or indian restaurant will choose their favourite dish time and again, not wanting to risk trying something different. And so (IMHO) its the same with music. Once people have discovered just how good someone like Lee Collinson (or me for that matter....ha!) are you could charge a tenner and fill the venue. Anyway Hille, dont get so despondent, cos I reckon with the success we had with Lee last year, some of that will carry over and bring more along to see him at The Dick . Chouxfleur |

He was married with a child and doing a lot more on the art side (he's also an excellent artist) last time I heard of him but I don't have a current address or contact details. I taught him the tune Lord Mayo (with erroneous title Lord Mayor's March) as featured on Slip the Driver a Fiver and am credited for same on that album! Zen |

Looking back through this thread to 2002 (Pete Jennings), I am proud to say that Lee apparently learned DRIVING WHEEL from a cassette by Pigfoot (with me on vocal) - see also recent "Let's talk Tom Rush" thread. I haven't seen his name around for ages. Maybe, as Zen says above, he is more involved in the art world. Be nice to hear him again. In earlier days, he did a few excellent floor spots at the old Weybridge Folk Club (Hand and Spear). |

I have both Slip the Driver a Fiver and Breathless, and love to lose myself in his beautiful arrangements. Driving Wheel blows my mind, but The Beautiful Waitress is special, too. I wish he was out there performing still, but googling only got me this far! Come on Lee, your fans are waiting for either a CD or Lee in person! |
