Following a phone call from a friend in the West country this morning I am sad to announce the death from cancer of Tony Rose. Another grand singer gone too early. Burl.

That is sad news indeed, and I'd hoped it wouldn't turn out this way, as did everyone else who's ever known him, or listened to him.

Here's a page with more about Tony - though it hasn't caught up with his death yet.

Very sad, indeed. Not much else to add I'm afraid.

Off to listen to "Young Hunting" now

Very sorry to hear this. I learned of Tony and his music here at the Mudcat. I've refreshed an interesting thread on him from 1998, through July of last year: please click here.

May he be at peace,

kat

What very sad news. I really thought he was on the mend. The world of folk song and music has lost a really nice guy and a superb performer and entertainer.

There are many with more memories than of him, but mine are of a late night, after the club, the first time I saw someone put whiskey in coffee, talking with him and (the late) Brian Hughes, in Gimber Cottage, overlooking St. Johns Green, in Colchester, Essex, UK.

I always thought him to be one of the good guys.

He was an old friend from folky youth days, we went to the same college in the 60's,a wonderful singer. Sheath and Knife , Just as the Tide was Flowing and the Bellringing come to mind as my favourites of his, but there were so many. I was dead jealous of Tony's beautiful voice, because he went off to be a teacher, whereas I wanted to be a musician and had a lousy voice. I told him how much it pissed me off! Frequently. I have so many fond memories, I'll just have to think about him for a while. Cheers, Tony.

Very sad news. I saw him here in Pontardawe in the early 1970's, a great evening.

Wish I could listen to Young Hunting again, but I seem to have lost it.

Tony was the guest the first time I ever went to a folk club (Brentwood) in 1968. I was converted to folk music on the spot and still can't get enough.

A great loss. We were hoping so much that he would recover and still be with us. I had the opportunity to see him perform just twice - once in London and once in Philadelphia. Those performances are memories to treasure. It's so good that he made that one last CD so new listeners can appreciate his talent.

Regards,
John

I knew a few sides of Tony Rose. For nearly thirty five years I've been a fan of Tony Rose the performer. For nearly thirty as a club and festival organiser too. For the last fifteen or so, Tony the teacher, witty family man and rugby fan from Odcombe. They were all really smashing, talented blokes. I'll miss them all sorely, as will all of his friends in the Yeovil area.

This is devastating news. He came to Seaford and Elsie's only a short while ago and was, as ever, superb.
He will be much missed by many outside of the West Country.

For me Tony singing Sheath and Knife was the definitive revival folk performance.

Rosie and I have many fond rememberances of Tony back in the early to late 70s and 80s. He was another of the Leader greats- one of a very select group who one way or another have been silenced.

Ralphie

Thanks - the RT just says Nic Jones and New Victory from the 1970s... it's Nic as I type this (Billy don't weep for me).

I first heard Tony Rose at my first Sidmouth, when I was still at school, and I'm very sad.

Kit

PS But now Fiona is playing New Victory, from One More Dance and Then - Bonny Kate, which is very uplifting

I too remember Tony from University. The first song I heard him sing was Diesel and Shale - I can still hear it now - what a voice. And he just got better and better with lovely accompaniments on guitar and concertina. Thanks for the memory Tony.

Fond memories of Tony when he and I were together at the Sidmouth Festivals in I think 1970 and 71 and also at the Whitby Festival I ran at that time. He will always be remembered as a great performer and a great guy.
