G'day,
What is mp3? Have a look at this thread. If that's a bit technical, mp3 is a very new means of storing audio in high quality, high compressed form.

Cheers,
Alan

And this:

What is MP3?

What is Layer 3 Audio (better known as MP3)?

MPEG layer 3 is an audio format that produces highly compressed files without sacrificing audio quality. Perceived frequency response and signal-to-noise ratio are retained. Without data reduction, digital audio signals typically consist of 16 bit samples recorded at a sampling rate more than twice the actual audio bandwidth (i.e. 44.1 kHz for Compact Disks). So you end up with more than 1400 kbit to represent just one second of stereo music in CD quality. By using MPEG audio coding, you may shrink down the original sound data from a CD by a ratio of 12 to 1, without losing sound quality. The compression ratio by itself makes the MP3 format ideal for copying songs to computer. The smaller file size also means that posts will be less likely to be dropped: a 1-part file is more likely to come through whole than a 12-part file. The disadvantages of MP3 compression are that lots of processor power is required to encode and play files, a sound-card is required (16-bit sound card recommended for PCs), and the player/encoder/decoder software is not in widespread use; although, it is being used more and more each day.

And it appears that you probably need a Pentium!

Regards John

Now, Alan, if you'll just add MP3 to your MIDITXT program we'll be in business. Shouldn't take more'n half an hour or so (tongue very far in cheek).

Seeing as you mentioned "Rocky Road to Dublin" I have some questions about the song.

Years ago when my Father was a boy, my Great Grandmother used to sing the song to him.

The way that he remembers it is...

They've banished all the hogs on the rocky road to Dublin
Garra ga dira thum
Gara ga dira thagga dee
Garra ga dira thum

The questions are...
Does anyone have any more of this version?
Are they nonsense words or is it meant to be Gaelic?
Does anyone know versions other than the one that The Dubliners sing?

Thanks, Bert.

No, it´s not gaelic. These are "nonsense-words" very common in Irish music, often used in choruses. I could imagine that they are derived from the former lilting-style, used when the Irish language was forbidden, and people had to sing without using words at all.

Yip! Harald is right. It's only lilting or mouth music. Lilting is still a recognised art and there are lilting competitions to this day. It is most useful if you have no instruments to play as was the usual case in the bad days of old.

Dances were often held where mouth music was the only form of music out of neccessity.

Hi,

Isn't it on "The Long black veil" being massacred by the Chieftains and the Rolling Stones?

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who didn't know what an mp3 was.

Slainte

Alison

Yes Alison, it is. But besides, do you know of at least one folky group that did not do a version of the Rocky Road ? So I can accept the Stones´ version, too. Obviously, they had lots of fun, playing it. Isn´t that also an aim of folk music ?

Slan go foill, Harald

One small complaint: The midi link offered by Harald is quite a lot like Rocky Road but doesn't really match any version I've ever heard.

Lidi: If your ISP allows 4.6 megabyte attachments, PM me your address and I'll mail it to you.
