Got to talking about this one yesterday over dinner, so I went looking for information on the film and found this:

A Mighty Wind

Release Date: April 18, 2003
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures
Director: Christopher Guest
Screenwriter: Christopher Guest, Eugene Levy
Starring: Christopher Guest, Eugene Levy, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Bob Balaban, Ed Begley Jr., Laura Harris, Linda Kash, Christopher Moynihan, Parker Posey, Jim Piddock
Genre: Comedy, Musical
MPAA Rating: Not available
Official Website: Not available
Review: Not available
DVD/VHS: Not available
Movie Poster: Not available
Plot Summary: The movie centers on The Folksmen - veterans of The Great Folk Music Scare of the 1960s - Jerry Palter, Alan Barrows and Mark Shubb whom met as freshmen at Ohio Wesleyan and over the next 26 months played and sang their own brand of 'eclectified folk' music. Recently reunited after more than two decades, they are again becoming a popular late addition to folk festivals within a day's auto travel of their homes.

And it appears that Christopher Guest is not going to be finished with the folk once "A Might Wind" is released. Look what else I found that he has in development:

Baba Said There'd Be Days Like This, starring Parker Posey

Oksana Sotnikow (Parker Posey) is a celebrated soloist in the Red Deer, Alberta-based Ukrainian dance company Rzeczownik. But she dreams of the day her talent and drive will catapult her out of her one-horse town and into the position of principal dancer in one of the flourishing folk dance theatres of Brighton Beach, New York. With the assistance and coaching of her choreographer and fiancé Don Kostyk (Eugene Levy), Oksana dances her way through a series of Canadian dance competitions, where she continually butts heads (and feet!) with her nemesis, Brenda Majiwska (Catherine O'Hara). But Brighton Beach is only big enough for one prairie-bred hoofer with a heart of gold. Will Oksana be awarded the audition before the legendarily demanding Godfather of eastern European folk dance, Myron Horudko (Christopher Guest)? As Oksana triumphs over adversity -- blistered feet, aching knees, and a pair of boots that "mysteriously" go missing only to turn up later in the trunk of Brenda's car -- she ruefully recalls, "Baba said there'd be days like this."

I'm with you Rick.....Guest, Levy, and their troup of "regulars" have done some of the funniest stuff I have ever seen. Levy and Guest write a script outline and then let these top impromptu people develop the characters and the dialogue which is what makes them so completely believable in the mockumentary format. Parker Posey, Catherine O'Hara, Linda Kash, Bob Balaban, Ed Begley, Michael McKean,etc......all are just terrific and you really believe they are the folks they play. I have seen Guffman and Best in Show probably 20 times or more each and continue to laugh while I am in awe of their abilities. I've been tracking on this one for awhile and I hope it's half as good as the others because if so, it will be great!!!

I still haven't seen Waiting For Guffman. My sister is an actress and she raves about it, says it's scary how accurate it is.

I did see Best in Show though. They really are quite a troupe.

Several years ago there was a "Spinal Tap" "special" on one of the TV networks. At the beginning they featured the "Folkmen" performing outside the concert venue. This may be available in video format for a chance to get a little preview.

Someone who finds THE FUNNIEST BIT from a hilarious film....and a bit that is SOOOO obscure that NOBODY I know even laughed at, or had a clue why I found it funny.........well.....well...

Bat Goddess, will you marry me?

Dammit! forgot I was already married! You too! Oh well, in another life..... Oh and if you say no....

Catspaw, will YOU marry me?

Harvey and Jed are out of the question!

Eugene Levy's Character in "Best in Show": "I've always had two left feet".

Bob Balaban's character in "Waiting for Guffman" after 'Sparky' has been RE-hired to direct the show: (nope, no dialogue, just a "look" that makes me laugh at the memory of it)

Jeez All that AND Guest is married to Jamie lee Curtis!!

When Spinal Tap played the Bay Area last year the Folksmen were the opening act. The audience went nuts and didn't want the Folksmen to leave after they had played their three song opener. Alas, the Folksmen had some where else to be....

Linn, if you find Shroud of Turin beach towels put me down for half a dozen!

Linn, will you MAKE SURE that Jeri sees those films? There is simply NO excuse for her not to.

Nuthin' to do with Christopher Guest (in an obvious way) but when I was growing up I used to listen to American country music radio (you could get it late at night) and it was an absolute revelation for me.

Not just a chance to hear Webb Pierce, Hank Williams and Kitty Wells, but also the advertisements for "Tablecloths and napkins with 'The Last Supper' in FULL COLOUR, 'EMBLAZONED' on them. It went along with the ads for "live baby chicks...Guaranteed Live"!!

This was when I truly understood that American culture was TOTALLY different than Canadian, even though we had the same houses, cars and Luxuries. Years later when a comedian (I forget who, perhaps Shelly bermen) made jokes about selling "Last supper tablecloths...so you can eat dinner while watching someone else's LAST dinner"..I could remember that this may have been hilarious but it was also REALITY!

Now THAT was funny!

Cheers

Rick

oh gawd Rick.........What a flashback that was! I think I need to go lie down.............And on a tangenital issue, there was Dolly on TV with Porter showing you them lovely towels you could get in boxes of Breeze detergent.

Jeri hasn't seen any of these???? Linn, you gotta' help the girl out here. This stuff is right down her alley! In the Guest/Levy films one of the finest parts is the attention to detail in backgrounds. I watch more set stuff now just to get the full benefit of how far they will go to make it real. In Guffman there are these little touches like the trumpet player playing tympani at the same time. At first glance, it's just kinda' funny but what really makes it a riot is that anuone who has ever gone to a small town "Community Players" production knows that is EXACTLY what goes on.

I am so locked into this stuff now that I have watched three other Parker Posey movies just to see what she's like in different and more traditional settings. It's also fun to catch some of these people in other films as well......I damn near fell off the couch a few weeks ago when I was reading while watching "A Few Good Men"...and realized the Doctor on the stand was Guest!   And if you missed John Michael Higgins as David Letterman in "The Late Show," it's well worth the watch.

"Well not YOU specifically, but that kind of music...."

"Show's at 1800 hours"

"Will ya do somethin' slow, so the wife and I can dance"?

Fred Willard from SPINAL TAP.
****************************************************

JERI!! ATTENSHUTTT! We got "Canadian Bacon" this afternoon. We'll watch it tonight.
**************************************************

Harvey, just saw a clip today with Pat Boone telling a story from when he was Ozzie Osbourne's neighbour. (Mudcatters should know that Harvey as well, was once a neighbour of Ozzie's...I'm not jokin').

Pat says that the Osbournes hardly EVER swore..he figures that was because of HIM. He remembers going for bike rides around the neighbourhood with Sharon, who pulled Ozzie in a wagon behind her!!!!

Cheers

Fred Willard is always good in the things, but what made his performance so good in "Best In Show" was his complete take-off on Joe Garagiola who does the Westminster Show AND IS just that dumb!! I figure Fred had a hard time being as inane and off-topic as Joe is every year!

That's right, I forgot his part in Spinal Tap too. Another gem. His delivery is so cool and deadpan, yet smirky (izzat a real word?). First saw him on the old Fernwood Tonight show, which is where I also first saw Martin Mull. Those two worked great together.

OK - I watched "Best in Show." I suppose I'll have to watch it again because I'm forgetting lines already.

The most overpowering memory I have is one of just wishing I could slap the crap out of the Willard character. I kept waiting for Trevor to zap him with a comeback or two, but the only one he got in was "Yes. You said that last year." The result of this, inspired by Trevor's patience and pained looks, was that I was coming up with all sorts of comebacks myself.

Peanuts, pine nuts, hazel nuts, macadamia nuts, coconuts...

The folk group had a debut on Saturday Night Live back when Shearer and Guest were regulars, and do a great impression of the that certain type of early 60s goateed-and-button-down-collar warbling prigs who occupied the rungs beneath the Weavers, New Christy Minstrels and Kingston Trio. Should be hilarious.

My favorite scene in Spinal Tap? The impromptu scene when the boys visit Graceland and Nigel solemnly begins to sing Heartbreak Hotel at the King's grave. The others chime in and they are immediately trying to work out the harmonies. The film was highly improvised and spontaneous and I loved it.

Today! Puppet Show

I think it might have actually been the Westminster show...channel-surfing dontcha know. I remember thinking "Why the hell GARAGIOLA?!"

Is Guest a folkie? He's got singer-songwriters (the Terrier duo) (alright, it's a stretch) in Best of Show and he sings the Barbra Allen verse about the flora on their graves on the phone.

OH Guest is a folkie alright. (He did MARTIN guitar ads on the back pages of "Acoustic Guitar".

Watched Canadian Bacon twice. It didn't knock me out as a cohesive film, but I loved the cameos, and a number of the scenes. I suspect if I'd first seen it when it was made I'd have like the film as a whole better. Trying to satirize Dr, Strangelove (which in iteslf was a brilliant satire) may not have been a great move. Read a short (reasonably current) blurb by Moore where he kind of agrees with that. Stephen Wright saying "welcome to Canada" after being attacked is hilarious,......eh?

Gene Levy wrote the Terrier Song and several others. Guest wrote a few as well. Michael McKean sings barbara Allan verse and he's got a some folk interest as well as Rock from Spinal Tap and some of the hilarious takes he did as Lenny on LaVerne and Shirley. It's a really strange and funny group of people, all improv backgrounded and frrom what I've read and heard, they all can't wait til Guest/Levy do another project as they have a great time working together. I assume you know that Guest is married to Jamie Lee Curtis? What a pair they must be.....They've been married quite awhile and seem to be really happy.
