I need the correct lyrics for this song. I could catch most of it from a recording but there are still some blanks. Would appreciate any correction or help. Thanks.

One bright early morn in the month of May
Under the old linden tree
We danced and we sang till the end of the day
Under the old linden tree
We sat in the branches do sturdy and strong
And filled all the air with a yodeling song

Chorus: ...(don't know)...

...everyone ran when it started to rain
Under the old linden tree
We...till the sun shined again
Under the old linden tree
And when we were hungry, we'd...to eat
And we were thirsty we'd cider so sweet

We made pretty garlands to put in our hair
Under the old linden tree
The boys are so sturdy the girls are so fair
Under the old linden tree
And when we went home at the end of the day
We walked arm in arm as we sang all the way

Gloria,

I respond somewhat hesitatingly to this - but it may help. German folk songs are not my forte, but a choir that I am in sings a German folk song with frequent references to a Linden Tree. The title goes (blush) something like ' Un Schoner _______'. If this doesn't trigger some other responses (perhaps defamatory) I will provide more details tomorrow.

Regards John

Thanks John. Will wait for your next reply. I need it for a choir, I'm arranging the score so I need correct lyrics.

Must apologise Gloria, but clean forgot about it last night.

I have SATB for the German lyrics, on a single page. Will gladly fax it to you OR can submit the German words to this forum or send a Midi of the bass part. Please let me know. Am aware that this may be a wild goose chase, but happy to follow your wishes.

Regards John

I think I would appreciate a fax. It would be easier for me to see from the SATB score whether it's the correct song I'm looking for. I'll be able to figure it out from the German. OK, now how do I give you my fax number? And one more thing, I live in Malaysia. Anyway thanks so much!! Gloria

Hi Gloria,

Pardon the delay, but I've been out of town a lot. Tracked down the lyrics and Midi at the excellent German site which is included in the DT links. I haven't taken the time to learn the HTML commands that many of our fellow Mudcatters are so adept at. Here is the link:

I very much suspect that this is not what you want - but it is still a lovely song.

Regards John

Here is another version of Linden Tree that I stumbled across. Regards, John

THE LINDEN TREE

Between the well and gateway
There stands, a linden tree.
Of yore beneath its branches
My fancy wandered free,
Its bark with words so tender
My hand has oft o'er laid;
In every joy and sorrow
It drew me to its shade.

Last night, once more I passed it
At hour of deep repose,
And heeding not the darkness
Was fain my eyes to close.
I heard its branches murmur,
I heard its sweet behest?
Come hither, friend beloved,
Here find thy place of rest.

A freezing wind assailed me,
It caused my face to burn,
My hat flew swiftly from me
I had no heart to turn.
I now frequent no longer
That scene of mem'ries fair,
But ever hear the murmur
Sweet peace was thine when there,
I now frequent no longer
That scene of mem'ries fair,
But ever hear the murmur
Sweet peace was thine when there,
Sweet peace was thine when there.

Chorus Hi didle ha ha ha ha
Repeat
Repeat
Hi didle ho.

How everyone ran etc
We sat warm and dry etc

hungry we'd plenty to eat

the boys all so sturdy the girls all so fair.

this is from memory of my junior school days and I'm nearly 60 now. I so enjoyed singing this song. This is somewhat late for your choir however......

RurigFan, that is yet another translation of Schubert's song from "Winterreise", like the one given by John in Brisbane 14 Sep 00 - 01:26 AM.

The song the OP had in mind is a very free adaptation by Murgatroyd Farrar of the German song Beim Kronenwirt (MIDI there), the latter song describing a country wedding merrymaking all night through.

A translation of the old German song at www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/songster/29-the-linden-tree.htm

But other words were put to the same tune.

Looked for the lyrics you posted, but no joy.

Further to the message I just sent saying it was available on Amazon, my apologies, but apparently it is not available at present, but may become so soon.

Having read this thread, I have done my own version of this song on YouTube using the lyrics given by others above and the ones missing which I found on the Amazon site which I mentioned above. The only word I am not sure of I have made an educated guess at, and that is 'apples' which seems to me to be a fair possibility and fits poetically and rhythmically
