does anyone use it? I just downloaded a free 14 day trial, and instantly made a little recording..just like that. It screwed up my computer though and I don't dare have that because I have no one to get me unstuck. I got low memory, which is quite probable, and script errors so I couldn't open email to send the recording..but it did it just in a snap.

Anyone using it? I think it is just for the Mac. Anyone solved these problems?

Mary, I don't use a Mac, but there is a magazine from the UK, Computer Music, which supplies monthly a CD of programs for Mac and Windows. They maintain a web-site with a message base.

Mary, how does it compare with Band-In-A-Box? I mean, does it serve the same purposes, or does it do things that BIAB doesn't do?

I have BIAB, but I'm just beginning to try to work with it.

Oops. Apparently, the Computer Music site is offline for some updating. It said it'll be back sometime (noon?) Sunday the 15th (today)

Mary--I have sound studio, but haven't used it before--it looks simple enough, but it does seem to require about 20mb to work--If you have 64mb of RAM, and your operating system may take up about 40mb, you will have only about 4mb available to run any other programs--

Recording programs take up a lot of RAM, and the files that they create can be huge, so it is generally a good idea to close down everything else while you are recording--

I am realy frustrated but I think I had better unload it again. I know too little and it's doing wierd things to my computer..probably if I had a consultant waiting in the wings it would be fine but I don't....I downloaded again today and again recorded just instantly..nothing to read, understand...it was so easy..and after I restarted computer was able to get it encoded into an email message..which was huge and wouldn't go. Now I hope I can get email working again.

Mary,

Forget the computer. Learning written English should be made a priority.

Mary, can you save your recordings as MP3s or other audio formats that Windows users can open (hear)?

Also wondering how it compares with Sound Jam, which I have used for recording directly into the computer via a mic.

Mary:

I use it extrensively, The only problem I have had with it is that does not do multiple tracks. But the deatures it does have are veyr well implemented and I have had no problems with it. I am running Mac OS 10.2 on a dual G4 machine. If you are running it on anything less than a G3 you may run into synchronization [problems, I imagine.

it is a g3.

I had to take it off my computer because it was screwing things up. But it sure seemed like a great program for someone who knew what they were doing. I might have had a critical lack of memory and someone suggested a virus but I don't think that was the problem. mg

If you could open the program and record a file, you have enough memory to run it--so that is OK--

The only other problem that you have mentioned is with your e-mail--if you tried to e-mail an AIFF file(which is the type of file my version creates, unless I ask it to create a different one), it is no wonder that you are having problems, since they are way too big to send as e-mails--you will have a little better luck if you save as a .WAV file(which Windows users, such as Genie, will be able to use)--even still, depending on your e-mail program, even a .WAV may still be too big to send without some re-setting--

Mary:

As far as file sizes goes, the Sound Studio makes AIFFs. If you want to send them by email, use iTunes to turn them into MP3s forst -- you get a huge compression factor, and a reasonable reduction in quality. MP3s are sufficient for most purposes. I turned all the Mudcat CDs cuts into AIFFs before cutting the masters in order to have the bet sound I could, but for mailing them MP3s is the way to go.

How was Sound Studio screwing things up? As M Ted says it is probably not memory per se. But which version of the OS are you running?

Re-reading Mary's posts, Amos, it looks like she successfully recorded and saved files--which means that the program is working fine, so there probably is no conflict with the OS and there is enough memory to run it, as well---

Tell us what programs you had up, and which one you were running when you had your problems--My guess (as I said above) is that the problems weren't related to the Sound Studio, but that the e-mail program hung or froze because she was trying to e-mail an AIFF file--

Concur, M.T. Mailing AIFFs is not possible with most mail providers because the files are so large. Mac's ITunes converts them to MP3 effortlessly, though.

It is possible she's short of disk space, which can hang up the whole system depending on how loaded the disk is.
