Subject: Xmas Gift Help--instrument stand From: GUEST,vixen @ work Date: 17 Dec 02 - 09:16 AM Dear Mudcats-- As many of you know, my partner Reynaud plays a plethora of stringed instruments. What I want to give him for a gift is a stand that will hold (ideally) his mandolin, banjo, fiddle, and guitar. Given that so far I haven't been able to find anything that will do this, and assuming that in actual fact he'll be playing one while the other three are at rest (we're looking into grafting extra arms onto him...) a stand that holds three will probably suffice. All the three-instrument stands I've found, however, are for guitars, with the "bottom" support way down by the bottom of the stand, which won't do for the mandolin or fiddle. I'm sure somebody somewhere makes what I'm looking for, and I'm equally sure that somebody on the Mudcat knows about it! Any and all assistance is gratefully appreciated! V |
Subject: RE: Xmas Gift Help--instrument stand From: Raptor Date: 17 Dec 02 - 09:44 AM I have a guitar stand that supports Three guitars by dangling them yes it has back supports that are almost to the ground but my mandola just hangs there and is fine! It can be modified to hold a fiddle! Raptor |
Subject: RE: Xmas Gift Help--instrument stand From: jonm Date: 17 Dec 02 - 12:28 PM Is this UK? If so, try the Music Room - they do the very thing (or at least used to until recently, and they are good enough to source most stuff even if they don't stock it). At this time of year, you're best to phone on 01295 852020, or use their website www.the-music-room.com |
Subject: RE: Xmas Gift Help--instrument stand From: GUEST,Vixen@work Date: 17 Dec 02 - 03:28 PM Raptor and JonM-- Thanks for the suggestions. The three-instrument hanging stand worries me because the banjo is so dad-blasted heavy--I'm afraid it will either weaken/break its neck from hanging or tip over the whole stand because it outweighs the other three instruments combined. I'm not in the UK, but I did check out The Music Room website. I didn't see what I'm looking for, and it would probably take too long to get here. I had no idea when I started looking for this kind of thing that it would be so difficult to find! Thanks again for the help! V |
Subject: RE: Xmas Gift Help--instrument stand From: Clinton Hammond Date: 17 Dec 02 - 03:44 PM Get him a brace of pub props, and he can attach them to a bar stool! The banjo and guitar can rest gently on the floor, while the mando and the fiddle are WAY light enough to 'hang' from the pub prop! And they can be broken down to NOTHING for ease of carry! :-) |
Subject: RE: Xmas Gift Help--instrument stand From: Clinton Hammond Date: 17 Dec 02 - 03:50 PM oops... too quick with the enter button... Here's a pic of mine in action If ya want, contact me, and I can send ya a pick of my mando hanging from it as well... Here's where you get Pub Props from :-) Happy hunting eh! |

Subject: RE: Xmas Gift Help--instrument stand From: GUEST,Claymore Date: 18 Dec 02 - 12:45 AM The three neck-hold stand I use holds my banjo just fine. I actually had to modify the neck-hold (a U shaped piece of metal covered with surgical tubing) for my Martin by bending the U in a tighter circle, but the other two U's held my long neck and my six string banjo all at one time. The stand comes in two pieces, which are slid into eachother and fixed with a tension thumb screw. The base is a tripod very like a mic stand. The whole thing cost me about $40 and should be available to order through any music store. Good Luck |

Subject: RE: Xmas Gift Help--instrument stand From: Big Mick Date: 18 Dec 02 - 02:21 AM If you consider the Pub Prop, please order it from Dick at Camsco. This helps the Mudcat. Mick |
Subject: RE: Xmas Gift Help--instrument stand From: GUEST,vixen@work Date: 18 Dec 02 - 11:26 AM The pub prop looks like just the ticket! He can stick four of them around a stool and the whole works is right there to hand. Thanks for the heads up about Camsco, Big Mick. I just sent Dick an email. By the way, have you organized those layabouts yet??? V |
Subject: RE: Xmas Gift Help--instrument stand From: Leadfingers Date: 18 Dec 02 - 03:13 PM I use a triple stand and hang a D35 Martin.a Maya mastertone copy 5 string banjo and a Docherty mandolin on.I modified with a leather covered cardboard box th hold a set of whistles They all set there quite happy until needed, and the fact that the backrest is way below the mandolin doesnt affect it,nor the weight of the banjo. But I do have Pub Props as well for informal sessions. |

Subject: RE: Xmas Gift Help--instrument stand From: dick greenhaus Date: 18 Dec 02 - 10:30 PM Hi- I decided to carry the PubProp at CAMSCO because I thought it was a neat solution to a real problem, and because it was such a pain to try and get one in the US. So far, I'm very happy with mine. It works fine on my guitard, fiddle and mandolin, as well as my normal-sized banjos. It doesn't work well on a short-necked banjeaurine, which is too short to rest on the floor and too heavy to hang from the PubProp. I suspect that tenor banjos and banjo-mandolins may encounter a similar problem. Brian's instrument rest may prove to be the answer for these--I'm still eperimenting. CAMSCO is selling the PubProp for $18 (including shipping). That's about the same price as it's selling for in its native England. You can order with a credit card at 800/548-FOLK (3655) |
