Subject: RE: Morris Dancing in US/Canada? From: GUEST,Jake Jones MMU Date: 15 Feb 12 - 08:16 AM Hi everyone, I'm a student from MMU university in England, i've posted about this on another thread, but i'm doing my dissertation on Morris Dancing and i'm looking in particular at North American Morris dancing, does anyone have any links on early evidence of Morris dancing in North America? Thanks :) I tried accessing the link which Ian posted earlier in this thread but it didn't seem to work. |
Subject: RE: Morris Dancing in US/Canada? From: Mr Red Date: 15 Jan 03 - 08:08 AM Some of the best sides I have seen have been North American visitors. Let's face it if you are going to chance your arm in the home of Morris you better be good. AND they are. |
Subject: RE: Morris Dancing in US/Canada? From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 14 Jan 03 - 12:48 PM Rana, who I agree has not posted for a while, is with Green Fiddle Morris. He has a litlle Corgi puppy, maybe it ate through his computer cables. I thought that he was from Birmingham though, not (God's real own City) Manchester. JohnB |
Subject: RE: Morris Dancing in US/Canada? From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 14 Jan 03 - 03:52 AM Mudcatter Rana, formerly from God's Own City (like Harvey Andrews, Bullfrog Jones and my 'umble self) but now working in Canada, is in a Morris side but hasn't posted recently. RtS |
Subject: RE: Morris Dancing in US/Canada? From: pavane Date: 13 Jan 03 - 12:38 PM It has long been my belief that Morris Dancing was in fact derived from early keep-fit sessions. It actually fulfils all the requirements for high-impact aerobics, i.e. hands above the head and both feet off the ground. |
Subject: RE: Morris Dancing in US/Canada? From: GUEST,Andrew Date: 13 Jan 03 - 08:20 AM I came across a team in Minneapolis last summer while on a trip from the UK. So despite comments from un-named Guest and Cluin, they do dance in public - and they didn't get shot ! They only dance in summer I imagine, don't think they have yet perfected Morris on Ice. Still they also had some fine singers amongst their ranks so that probably keeps them going over winter. The name was Blaggards I think. Andrew |

Subject: RE: Morris Dancing in US/Canada? From: banjoman Date: 11 Jan 03 - 08:19 AM We had a visit a few years ago to the UK by Shepherdstown Morris, a Ladyside dancing Northwest Clog - and excellent they were too. From Shepherdtown West Virginia I think - Haste ye back |
Subject: RE: Morris Dancing in US/Canada? From: Wincing Devil Date: 11 Jan 03 - 01:30 AM There is always the Foggy Bottom Morris Men in the DC area. That's what we need in these troubled times: Men in funny clothes hitting each other with sticks and waving hankies!

Subject: RE: Morris Dancing in US/Canada? From: GUEST Date: 09 Jan 03 - 12:40 PM There's lots of Morris Dance groups in the US but they're smart enough to do their dancing in private. They know how they will be ridiculed when they start waving their handkerchiefs and prancing with their bells in public. |

Subject: Morris Dancing in US/Canada? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 09 Jan 03 - 10:53 AM Just curious. Seems like all of the references to Morris dancing around here are made by UK or other European 'Catters. Does anybody on the North American continent do it? If so, where? Our big annual state (Florida) folk festival features folk dancing from a lot of different cultural traditions, but I don't believe I've ever seen Morris dancing there. Bruce |
