Here's how I chord the Jim Ringer "Tramps and Hawkers:"

I (D)choose to see (D7)not the (G) things that be,
Or the (A7) miles and (G)years that are (D) gone.

I'm blinded by (D7)snow and the (G)sun,

I used to use a lot of shifts from the G chord to Bm; but decided they weren't needed, and made it sound too artsy.

A few years back I asked for the chords to "Peter Emberley" (same tune as T&H) only to be told "it's the same as Van Dieman's Land, idiot", which it ain't by me, thanks anyway. Recently I came at the tune again via the "Durham County" coal strike song and found about about the following chords, which work great for me. The part I would never have figured out on my own is going to the V chord on the second beat of the first and fourth lines. I like to get comfy with the I chord for lots of bars let alone beats before risking a change.

          thanks for your help.I've been searching in the meantime and have found a book of 100 Great Scottish songs with "Tramps and Hawkers " at no 49.They use F and Bb7 throughout.Maybe part of my problem is i'm strumming, my fingerpicking is coming along slowly.Maybe the improvisation good muscicians can bring to songs is the difference.Lioke you say developing the feel is what i need to do better.

If you have the tune in your head, it's rather an easy chore to simply know when to change chords----or not to change them. To me it seems fairly easy to do it by ear. But that's always the way I figured out to play any song I ever did.

I did use this fine tune for my version of The Lakes Of Pontchartrain.

(C)It was on the third of January,
I bid (F)Cairo town (C)adieu,
(C)I traveled down the river road
My fortune to renew,(G7)
No (C)money in my pocket,
No (F)credit could I gain,
And my (C)mind it turned with longing toward
The (G7)Lake of Pontchartrain.(C)

That's pretty much it. Just 3 chords unless you want to do it differently. Do it the way it feels correct for what you know musically already. Toss in your own personal cliches -- your own favorite picking or strumming cliches/idiosyncrasies. THEN what you achieve will be in your own style that people will know you by.

Which tradition? It's a great tune, and has been used for literally hundreds of songs. I wouldn't use the same chords for, say "Tramps and Hawkers". "Paddy West" and "Peter Emberly"--same tune, different moods.

It is the traditional melody, I believe. There has been at leastone other thread about this recently, I think.

I play, and sing, this, but I've never been dead sure what the right chords were. There's a few places where you could stick in a shift to a minor chord, or not, depending on how you wanted the song to "feel."

Does anyone know if the chord progression/melody for the traditional song Tramps and hawkers are the same used in the version Jim Ringer wrote lyrics to? (Tom Rusell and Dave Alvin have also been known to do this version.)

I'm not familiar with the traditional song's melody and just wondered... I see there are threads to it in the DT but clicking on the sound link gives me a 404 error.

Anyway, anyone familiar with the song?
