Subject: BS: John Fido / Australia From: jimlad Date: 25 Jan 03 - 07:12 AM Firstly let me offer an apology for this unorthodox use of Mudcat. I am trying to find an old mate of mine with the unusual name of JOHN FIDO,he emigrated to Oz around 1960 and will be about 60 yrs old now.In the UK he was a House painter. I have tried 'Friends Reunited' and the Australian White Pages telephone directory with Zero success. Can anyone help?? |

Subject: RE: BS: John Fido / Australia From: John MacKenzie Date: 25 Jan 03 - 10:19 AM I found a team [Cricket I think] called the Perth Redbacks on an Australian search engine called Web Wombat. In 1996 or thereabouts, they had two players with the surname Fido on their team. Might be an idea to try contacting them for info. It's certainly not a common surname, so there can't be too many around. Good Luck.....Giok |

Subject: RE: BS: John Fido / Australia From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 26 Jan 03 - 07:08 AM I tried to post this last night when I lost my connection You could try the Electoral Office - I'm not sure of their website but the following site leads to all federal Govt agencies www.fed.gov.au Newspapers sometimes publish Letters to the Editor from folks overseas re missing relatives/friends - try the Sydney Morning Herald, the Age (in Melbourne), The Adelaide Advertiser, The Australian. I can't think of names of other interstate newspapers, but most are owned by Murdoch or Packer (try News Ltd & Fairfax) We have a free press - free to be owned by the big boys!! The Australian Woman's Weekly also publishes letters. good luck. sandra |

Subject: RE: BS: John Fido / Australia From: Bob Bolton Date: 27 Jan 03 - 06:30 AM G'day jimlad, I think giok's Perth reference has some value ... back around 1960 most of the Poms still came out by boat .. and a hell of a lot scurried ashore at Perth ... first landfall ... and wouldn't get back on board - accounting for the high Pommy levels in West Oz! I'll just have to ponder who I know in WA ... apart from a non-folkie niece via the wife's side ... Regards, Bob Bolton |
