Naemanson and I are rolling down to NYC the weekend of April 12th to have good fun! We understand there's a shanty sing Saturday evening, 8 pm, at the Seamens Church on Front St. at the South Street Seaport. Neither of us has ever attended this event and we would welcome advice on how it is run. We both like to lead shanties and other sea songs but it's always useful to know upfront whether people take turns singing, or if only the most aggressive get to sing.

We'll actually be rolling into town Thursday evening, staying with my brother's family in Brooklyn. Maybe we can help organize another get-to-gether for Friday evening if anyone is interested.

New York City! The Big Apple in April! Will the trees have leaves? Will the grass be green?

Charley, let's go down into the subway system and play music the poor, the weary, the huddled masses!

There's nothing in the world to beat Manhattan in the Spring, guys -- take a long stroll down Fifth into Washington Square, and then wiggle your way down to the Bowery from there. It's like visiting another universe, I tell ya.

You are welcome to come to the Sunnyside Song Circle in Queens that day from 2:00 to 7:00 PM. It's just a short ride on the #7 subway train (Flushing Line) from Times Square or Grand Central to the 46th-Bliss Street stop in Sunnyside, and then less than a 5-minute walk to 41-05 47th Street (near Skillman Avenue). Call for directions 1-718-786-1533. All acoustic musical styles are welcome. Bring voices, instruments if you have them, and songs to share.

Thanks, Steve! We'll consider that but then there's also the "dancing chicken" in Chinatown. I bet Naemanson's never seen that!

Then there's Sahadi's Market on Atlantic Avenue. Walk in, inhale, and you're in seventh heaven.

Too bad Sloppy Louie's bit the dust...

Amos- you've still got time to fly out and join us.

Where's Chantyranger when we need him?

Franz- McSorley's Ale House might be worth a visit. I kind of doubt that there is still sawdust on the floor, or cobwebs on the stuff decorating the shelves behind the bar. But maybe they still have the sharp cheddar, crackers and onions. Don't suppose the floor is carpeted now? Well, it certainly belongs in the seven wonders tour, along with the dancing chicken.

Brett has been to Little India with me - Jackson Heights. Try the Jackson Diner. It is where all the Indian families go for a night out. Try Masala Dosa. In fact, bring one back for me. Then head over to Suffet's. Wish I could join you. If you need a place to crash, call me in Portland. I have innumerable friends down there with extra bedrooms.

Yes, the Jackson Diner! I grew up in Jackson Heights, and I remember when the JD was a plain old diner in its former location, about 200 feet north of where it now is. It's close to the 74th Street stop on the #7 Flushing Line train, just four east of the 46th-Bliss Street stop and the Sunnyside Song Circle. There are many fine and relatively inexpensive eateries along the route of the #7 as it winds its way through the Borough of Queens, starting with the Philly Smoke House barbecue joint near the Vernon-Jackson station and ending up with the dim sum houses at Main Street where the line ends. In between you will find Mexican, Irish, Filipino, Indian, Afghani, Thai, Cuban, Colombian, Peruvian, and what-not.

The ferry has been free for many years. How long since you've visited us? We generally do the chantey sing as a round robin. We dine at Radio Mexico before struggling 2 1/2 blocks over to the sing. Give a call to confirm and we'll know when to expect you. McSorley's still has the same food, etc. In fact, it's probably the same pieces of food that were there last time you came. The only difference is that the place's been integrated. Women at the bar and all that.

Drop me a PM for details. Eric

I'll be tagging along at Charley's coat tails. It's his van, after all. So far all the ideas sound good to me. I want to meet Larry and see the Jackson Diner. I don't think Sinsull took me there. We had dinner at that Argentine place.

Of course, this all assumes I'm still living in the USA on April 12.

Here's a few NYC events going on Fri 4/11:

Irish (from the Blarney Star website)

APRIL 11: BRENDAN TONRA and DERMOT GROGAN (Sets at 9 and 10:30 P.M.)
The music of County Sligo is justly celebrated but "Sligo" fiddle and flute playing is really a regional style that overlaps the county borders. Brendan Tonra and Dermot Grogan, both from northeast Mayo, are great examples of this. Brendan is a fiddler whose rhythmic swing and intricate ornamentation will remind listeners of the great Sligo fiddlers who recorded in New York in years past. He's also a well-known composer, some of whose tunes are played by virtually all Irish musicians. Dermot is a marvelous flute player and button accordionist with a huge repertoire of tunes, including many of Brendan's originals. Piano accompaniment from Brendan's musical partner Helen Kisiel.

Well, I will note that wherever I've parachuted into there has usually been one person locally who has been a key contact. In Australia it was Bob Bolton, in San Francisco Richard A. and Chantyranger, in Portland-West Genie/Barbara and Jonathan Lay. But I'm not sure who we should count on as our local guide/coordinater for NYC. Maybe it's just too big a nest of neighborhoods.

Sigh... Fortunately I used to visit the place when I was much younger and have the illusion that I can find my way around. My brother and I would come in on the train for Easter vacation and stay with my grandparents in Brooklyn Heights in a converted carriage house next to a fire station. The grandparents were both artists and did a great job of taking us to museums and for us exotic restaurants, and broadway shows which were always free for us because of their artistic connections.

We will follow up Eric's lead and plan to be at the Radio Mexico early Saturday evening on 4/12, but it really would be nice to know that someone else was planning to be there too.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Been awhile since I went to one of the NYC sings ... they used to go round the circle in a relatively orderly fashion, although the order did break down once when everyone seemed to be getting ready for a concert the next day.

One NYC thing I found disconcerting: if you rely on using a cheat sheet, hide it from the guy next to you ... he'll end up singing the song before you get there!

Hey, "When this lousy war is over ..." maybe I'll truck up to NYC too.
Cheers,

Brian

In San Francisco over 100 people, most of whom led songs, attended the shanty swap aboard the schooner Thayer. What kind of turnout should we expect in NYC for the April 12th swap?

It would be intriguing if we all took turns singing variations of the same song for the entire evening...;~)

How are the accoustics of the space? Is the shanty session the only thing going on or is there a TV with CNN/football blaring away? We used to sing songs one place where there was an active dart board, the field of fire of which transversed the circle. It was exciting...if you got the point!

Now there used to be a coffeehouse operating near my brother's place in Brooklyn near one corner of Prospect Park. Anyone know if it is still operating and what its format is like?

Looks like we'll be heading out to Brookhaven late Sunday afternoon for a song party with the Puleston family, a major source of my family's bawdy songs. It was way back in 1965 that I spent quality time with some of the younger members of that family, helping them sail back from the Bahamas to Chesapeake Bay. This should be a fine revival party!

We're still open for Friday evening suggestions, April 11th.

Well, I finally heard from Jan (bilgerat) who facilitates the Chantey Sing. He suggests that those locals who come are all very nice people, each one saying "Please excuse me!" before bursting into song. BG

Brett's got a bum knee from his California adventures, so we'll probably take the van over from Brooklyn and park it in the lot across from the Seamen's Church Institute. We'll nose around the Sea Port, drool over the ships, and show up at Radio Mexico for din-din around 6-6:30 pm.

Still no suggestions for Friday night, other than gathering at my niece's pub on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, the Last Exit, which now that it's "non-smoking" will probably be closing soon.

Looks like great weather for our trip south Thursday. I've got a new set of charts, and Brett's a master at navigating. I can hardly wait till we find ourselves rolling through them New Jersey salt marshes.

If you want to go on a really good guided tour of Ellis Island, a friend of mine has been leading tours out there since the late 1970s (we met when we were both NPS interpretive historians out there). He can get you to the island without having to wait in the long lines down at the Battery, a real plus when you have limited time in the city. I have mentioned on a Mudcat cookbook thread a cookbook I was helping to update--it's his, to do with recipes brought over by immigrants. The sale of the book is one of his business ventures. He leads private tours (there is a fee--I don't know what it is, but it's worth the money for the tour. Find a few folks to split the cost perhaps.)

Tom Bernardin has a site for the book and links to the tour and such. This link is for the tour.

If you don't make it out to the far reaches of Long Island, think about coming to Queens.

The Sunnyside Song Circle is holding a rare Saturday session on 4/12/03 to avoid conflict with Palm Sunday. It's taking place from 2:00 to 7:00 PM at my house in Sunnyside, Queens, close to the #7 Flushing Line train and to several bus lines. Call me at 1-718-786-1533 for details, or e-mail me using this link: Suffet@att.net

We will be ending at 7:00 sharp, so people can go out for the evening. Bev Grant, for example, is at the Peoples' Voice Cafe in Manhattan that night.

As far as Friday 4/11/03 goes, Joe Hickerson is at Polytechnic University in downtown Brooklyn. He'll be appearing at Wunsch Hall Student Center, 2nd floor lounge, at 8:00 PM. General public admission is $13. The Polytechnic campus is Metrotech Center, very close to the Jay Street - Borough Hall subway station where several lines converge.

Steve- Bev Grant should not be missed; I still remember her song "Together, We Can Move Mountains" from the 1975-76 rent strike at Co-op City. Unfortunately, Saturday is already pretty well jammed. Thanks for posting this information. The Joe Hickerson Concert is a strong possibility; I know the location well and subway access, as you've mentioned, should not be a problem.

Kat- I've been in contact with Don and Bonnie, but thanks for the reminder.

Looks like we'll have great weather for the drive down. We should be rolling into Brooklyn around 5:30 pm, assuming my navigator can get an appropriate sight from the middle of the Triborough Bridge: "What, you can't see the Gowanus Canal?"

Charley -- when you get back, we'll have to try out the song variant idea at The Press Room shanty session -- or songs with the same/similar verses or phrases. I'm sure with the voices and experience we encompass, we could fill the 4 hours.

Let's try it for kicks.

Have a grand time in the City! (But we'll miss you at the session.)

I don't kow, Charley. This leg is getting worse and worse. I started using crutches today. And I called the doctor for painkillers.

I really want to go on this trip but I am starting to think I shouldn't.

Ah, rats! That is really a bummer. Maybe you can bring him back a tacky touristy bit of kitsch? Seriously, am sorry to hear this. My son did some serious damage to his knee this past year and had to have surgery, which helped, but he is still working up to what it used to be through physical therapy, etc. Good luck on your trip and Naes, get better!

Thanaks for the hug, Kat. I am disappointed but the reality is that I wouldn't be able to enjoy the trip. Hell, I'm not getting much enjoyment out of my currrent routine now. And for those who know me and know about my battle with depression you should know that the black cloud has lifted and the sun is shining (except for the leg).

Hope your back in shape soon! One good thing is, it seems like Spring just may be pushing her way into the Northlands...but you will notice I said "may be". Watch yourself though.....Mud Season is not conducive with the use of Crutches!:>)

Arrived safe and sound in Brooklyn, finding a parking space right in front of my brother's place in Brooklyn, 16th St and 8th Ave, for those interested in such things, a couple of blocks from one corner of Prospect Park.

This morning in a driving cold rain storm my brother and I did a van tour of the Midwood neighborhood where the fabled green parrots are flourishing, huge communal nests on the light poles. Then we headed down to the waterfront where the trolly museum is trying to organize itself, lots of old waterfront warehouses in different stages of conversion. Some day soon this will all be waterfront condominiums and associated yacht dockage. Now's the time to buy in!

Then we crossed the fabled Gowanus Canal, crossed Atlantic Ave. through my grandparents' old neighborhood in Brooklyn Heights, to the Redhook Neighborhood where I saw that the old fireboat shed had been converted into an ice cream parlor. There's this intriguing music barge moored there where apparently there are concerts all summer. What a place for a Roll & Go concert!

This afternoon we'll head out, in the driving rain, to the Museum of Modern Art annex in Queens where there's a Mattise/Picasso show, do something cultural for a change. This evening there's to be a family gathering, nieces and nephews, at the family pub called the Last Exit at the lower end of Atlantic Avenue. It's supposed to be non-smoking now but I have my doubts. You're all invited and we could raise a song or two, embarrass all the younger relatives.

Larry- Thanks for your kind offer as a guide but I think I might as well take advantage of my family as guides, given that I really don't see that much of them.

Saturday, I'll see what I can do solo in the South Street Sea Port area, see if I can find a friendly street vendor to stash my banjo with while I'm wandering around. Are there special techniques to identifying the most trustworthy ones?
Looking forward to the Chantey Sing. I'm passing up the Joe Hickerson concert and the Lomax Festival, all of which look intersting but take more energy and time than I'm ready to commit. It's really much more fun to float around. I do hope that there's a good turnout for the Chantey Sing; I have this nagging suspition that other than Bilgerat and EBarnacle I may be the only person to show.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Re: leaving your banjo with a friendly street vendor.

Go for it! Can you leave your concertinas with him too? Did you take both banjos? I'm sure you can find someone willing to "take care" of the for you... and us!

Of course, it says a lot for (or against) banjos if none of the street vendors or homeless people are willing to be seen accepting a banjo....

I am planning to go down to Portsmouth on Saturday. Nikkie will go along and may help me lug the guitar.

Well, my adventures continue as we made our way to the Flying Saucer, a friendly neighborhood gathering place that my niece started on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, right across from Nevins St. I admired the Sunday comics glued to the ceiling posts, the stained glass framed artwork, and the selection of quices, salads and pastries for lunch.

We then drove off to The Museum of Modern Art Annex only to discover that the crowd stretched around the block, so we opted for the nearby Museum of Moving Images where I got to flub three lines in a cut from Glory, play with interactive vidio images, see a lot of old moving picture technology, movie collectibles, and Episode 3 of the Boy Scouts in the Amazon in which, I'm sure you recall, that their plane had crash landed, the pilot injured his leg and the two scouts whose first names were the same as their real first names (so they wouldn't miss whose turn it wasto speak) were floating down the river on a bamboo raft surrounded by a fleet of crocogators. Then they was captured by Indians and dragged into a large temple where there was a long tedious ceremony before one of them was picked up and hurled down a deep pit. It didn't look good but fortunately that was the end of Episode 3. Anyone willing to go back for Episode 4?

Our evening was spent at a neighborhood Italian restaurant and then we dissipated the rest of the evening away at my nephew-in-law's pub The Last Exit in Brooklyn, on Atlantic Avenue, opposite Henry Street.

Today, it's off to my mother's old neighborhood in Greenwich Village, opposite the Jefferson County Court House, and then to the Sea Port for the Chantey Sing.

Charley Noble

Charley -- While you're in the Village, try to stop in at the Lion's Head and have a pint for me. It's been nearly forty years since I was there, but I do recall it having some of the wittiest grafitti I've ever seen on a men's room wall.

Keep having fun -- Tom

The Lion's Head? That seems to ring a bell, echoing back from an earlier trek some 30 or 40 years ago when Franz and I did our first all-nighter in and around the Village. What joy to be in the streets (not the gutter) when the sun arose!

I'll have to check it out!

There used to be a bagel bakery just off Henry St. near the Henry St. Settlement. Freshly baked bagels and bialies - not the spongy stuff Dunkin' Donuts puts out. Don't miss it.

The Bowery! The Bowery
They say such things and they do such things
On the Bowery, the Bowery
I'll never go there anymore.

Speaking of which, if the Amato Opera is open, do not miss a performance!!! Tiny tiny theatre seats about 200 max. Tiny tiny stage. BUT they do the most amazing things with sets and perform full length operas. It is not unusual to see stars from the Met in the audience. The Amato is considered a training ground for future stars. Plus you can win a T-shirt at intermission.

Contray to popular rumor, I've met some nice friendly New Yorkers (yes, it's a mistake to label them as NYCers given their strong neighborhood idenities) associated with the Chantey Sing, some of whom I'd met before at the Mystic Sea Music Festivals. Still, when parachuting in as I did, it's nice to feel welcomed.

Now, let's see, how did this all work? First I scouted out the locale, the South Street Seaport Museum area, trekking over from Brooklyn on the subway, which because of early training I can still do reasonably well. I managed to find the prime locations, the Seamen's Church Institute and the Radio Mexico Restaurant, then walked over to see the Museum ships. The Peking, a big steel four-masted bark, was not available for boarding. The Wavertree, a full-rigged ship from 1885 was available for a tour so I enjoyed listening to the guide explaining what he knew of her history and the trials and tribulations of her renovation, and her current neds for more renovation. Then I nosed around some of the shops looking for things nautical, not finding a thing beyond what would expect to find at the Maine Mall; the music store there had not a single sea music CD, nothing but the usual contemporary stuff that I can't even categorize. Well, I decided to head back for Brooklyn, recharge my batteries for the evening. My brother graciously dropped me off at the Radio Mexico Restaurant, complete with backpack and banjo and within a few minutes (I'm always early) Al and a few other chantey singers showed up, readily identifable from the other diverse clientile, and joined me at my table. Ebarnacle also joined us a few minutes later, and we all chatted about the City and the serious business of sea music. The food by the way was remarkedly good, something which I wasn't necessarily counting on.

Then we went off to the Seamen's Church Institute, the chantey room being a large square room on the second floor with a bar! There was the usual circle of chairs, and people showing up throughout the first half hour. There were about forty people, half of whom led songs. Jan (Bilgerat) acted as host/coordinator and things started with taking turns, people being encouraged to give it a try if they were less experienced. Later the singing was more spontaneous, reacting to what someone else had just sung. I got to sing West Indies Blues (Harlem blues song from the 1920's), The Wreckers (an 1820's Key West ballad), A Cowardly Act (falling cow sinks Japanese trawler), Dramamine (parody of Whoop Jamboree as sung by the tourist windjammer crews), and Henry Lawson's Outside Track. Dan Milner did a nice Civil War blockade running song that I would like to know more about, the tune a varient of Maggie May. Jan did the bluesy version of Titantic. Alison Kelly was persuaded to lead Fire Down Below (she's getting married next weekend at the Seamen's Church). There was that wonderful song about the captain that plays his ukelale (sp) as the ship goes down. Al led his ballad about the Wavertree. There were also fine renditions of General Taylor, Rio, and Greenland Whale Fisheries. I'm spacing out on some individual names and other songs but maybe some of the other Mudcatters or lurkers will fill in. I even managed to sell a couple of Roll & Go CD's!

I'm invited them all up to the Press Room in Portsmouth some month when their Chantey Sing is not happening on the second Saturday, and some folks really seem intersted. We shall see!

Jan was kind enough to offer me a ride back to Brooklyn in his car, rather than braving the subway system with all my gear late at night. I got back before midnight.

Now it's Sunday, all bright and warm. My brother, his huge dog Yufi, and I have had our morning run through Prospect Park, we've consumed the best bagels in all of NYC which surprisingly enough are found just a block away from his house! Next stop is Bellport, Long Island, for a reunion with old music friends the Pulestons. What joy!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Back home at last! The 3 cats seems pleased to see me, Tejitu is now lying in my lap. Teji's mouse is also pleased to see me. Nice to find the house still here!

Now, let's see, we left off in Brooklyn planning to run out to Bellport, Long Island, which I did without getting terribly screwed up, arriving out at the Puleston spread around 4:30 pm. If you've ever read Cold Comfort Farm, you'll have some idea of how difficult it is to describe some places. There are two small cottages side by side, a barn with a silo that was successfully relocated a few years back, a pony shed, a chickenhouse which has been converted into a hobbit-like domicile, the llama shed, the sheds for geese and chickens and peacock, the wild geese and deer grazing on the lawn and the osprey nest (which you too can access on the web in real time if I could remember the web address; the mother just laid her first egg). There's an aluminum boat tied up at the neighboring boatyard that we used early this morning to see what was going on in terms of birds in the tidal marshes; the wild swans looked nice. This is getting complicated but Betty, the matriarch of the place, is an old school chum of my mother's and she was pleased to see me and receive a videotape from mother of her 30 minute program on her art and life on Maine Public TV. Betty's daughter Jennifer and her husband Peter then showed up and spirited me away to the converted chicken house where we played some songs, had dinner, and then Jen's former husband Gary showed up which was a total surprise to me. Jen and Gary were shipmates of mine back in 1965 when I helped them sail a 40 foot ketch back from the Bahamas to Annapolis. Anyway I had printed up about 30 of my old slides from that trip which they had never seen. We sang some more songs, and Jen showed me a pile of her father's favorite bawdy songs which she agreed to lend me as long as I made numerous copies. What joy!

Anyway, I took off this morning for the easternmost point of Long Island, Orient Point, where I arrived in time for the 11 am ferry and scouted over to New London and back up I-95 to Maine. Pretty neat to avoid all that horendous traffic back in NY and So. CT.

Thank you very much to all the fine people that made this a most enjoyable trip!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble, who will only droll over his "working copy" of Dennis Puleston's favorite bawdy songs

Just got on line for the first time in a week [Oh, the deprivation of it all!!] so I missed many of the comments leading up to the sing. the Bialy joint off Henry Street is Kossar's. they are a 24 hour store and make various other Jewish specialty rolls in addition to bagels as well as garlic and onion bialies. One of the major reasons I still live in the city. There's another really good one on Coney Island Avenue between Avenues T and U. They can be found on line and will ship anywhere. [Maybe I should migrate.] Lender's be damned!!

Here's the initial web info for the Puleston "Osprey Cam": postmorrow.org/OspreyFund/ospreycam.htm (feel free to post an active link).

Apparently for viewing the osprey nest in real time, it requires the installation of a free "plug-in" which maybe some intrepid Mudcatter will be curious enough to do. Be warned, however, that some of the activities of this pair of ospreys should be X-rated.

Anything we should consider looking into while we're there? Any Mudcatter's performing in town? I used to live in NYC, and I'm planning to revisit many old haunts, but what performances are available along folk lines?

The big thing going on this weekend is the Hudson River Revival. You can get a combined ticket by taking the train from Grand Central to Croton. We will be running the Chantey Sing at the Working Waterfront.

\\The monthly Chantey Sing will be on June 28 this month due to the load of competing events in June.
