Subject: Dan Sings Stan with Symphony Nova Scotia
From: GUEST,Hagen in Halifax
Date: 29 Apr 03 - 08:02 AM

This Friday May 2nd local Nova Scotian folksinger/songwriter Dan McKinnon will be unleashing the vocal chords and singing Stan Rogers songs with Symphony Nova Scotia in a night dedicated to two of Eastern Canada's most celebrated songwriters: Stan Rogers, (even though he was really an Ontario native); and Gene McLellan who wrote such well known songs as "Snowbird", "Put Your Hand in the Hand" and "The Call". Accompanying the solo performers, Dan McKinnon and John Gracie, who will be singing the Gene McLellan portion of the evening, and Symphony Nova Scotia, will be the award winning choir Soundtrax.

Thanks muchly for the advert. Yes, I'll have a chance to perform Stan's songs at the Rebecca Cohn auditorium where I saw Stan several times with Garnet, Curly Boy Stubbs and a few different bass players. I am looking forward to singing North West Passage in a full auditorium where 20 years ago I lent my voice from the other side of the stage with Stan leading us all. (And I still swear that one of the people whistling from the audience on the Home In Halifax cd is mine.)

Cheers,

Dan

Hi Dan,and congrats. on the opportunity to be singing Stan's songs in a great hall, with top drawer musicians.
Are you related to Catherine McKinnon (Voice of an Angel)from Singalong Jubilee fame, that was also recorded in CBC Halifax???
Cheers, Glen

Hey George,
Ya ain't wrong very often but I have Catherine's old "Voice of an Angel" lp from the Singalong Jubilee days, and she spelled it Mc at least back then.
Not that it means much. Half my relatives use the "a" and the others don't.
             Slainte,
                Sandy
Best of luck to Dan in any case!

G'Day,

As far as I know I'm not related to Katherine (but my father comes from a VERY large Cape Breton family....) Although, I do recall seeing her in B&W singing Farewell to Nova Scotia all those many years ago on Singalong Jubilee.
Also, it will be nice to stretch out a bit with the symphony especially on The Mary Ellen Carter and with Stan's portrait in the front of the Cohn looking on will be quite a thrill.

Thanks,

Dan

Thanks so much guys. I'm sure even Stan will be there in spirit. He did love to perform there. (There's also been talk of CBC recording it, to possibly be used on air, although nothing has been officially said.)

Once again, many thanks,

Dan

Dan is getting ready to travel to Ontario for some work, but when he returns he'll be going into this year's Beer and Beethoven here in Halifax at Pier 22. Tickets are already on sale.

Just got this in from Dan's manager...

Dan McKinnon:    95 spins in 19 weeks on FolkDJ CanCon Report!

Dan's latest CD, "Fields of Dreams and Glory", is getting amazing airplay across the US and Canada, and indeed around the world! In addition to continual support from CBC throughout Canada, his album is currently receiving airplay in Northern Ireland, Trinidad, Puerto Rico, Israel, New Zealand and was the featured album in Bathurst, Australia just last week!

His CD was named one of the top folk albums of 2005 by two prominent Folk DJs in the US: Rich Warren, The Midnight Special, WFMT in Chicago; and Ron Olesko, Traditions, WFDU in New Jersey.

"Hearing McKinnon for the first time was the same revelation as hearing James Keelaghan or Stan Rogers for the first time – a magnificent voice and seductive songs. By the end of the first track McKinnon draws you in and you can't stop listening." (Rich Warren, The Midnight Special, WFMT, Chicago, Illinois)

"Enjoyable collection of ballads from a Canadian singer songwriter with fine vocals and accompaniment." (Bruce Cameron, Come All Ye, Bathurst, NSW, Australia)

Dan's 19 consecutive weeks on the list puts him in pretty exclusive company; it has been at least 2-1/2 years since any solo folk artist from the Maritimes has equalled that record. It's great to get recognition from across North America and the world.

"I want to thank you for sending me a copy of your CD. Over the course of a year, I receive many CDs, some good, some bad, but I only play the very best on my program. I consider your CD not only to be good, but to be very, very good, and so over the weeks ahead I intend to play other cuts from it for my audience. Once again, I say thank you to you." (Norm Whitman, Detours, WYSO FM, Yellow Springs, Ohio)

"Beautiful voice and poetry from Canada." (Menacham Vinegrad, Worldwaves, Radio Upper Gallilee, Israel 105.3 FM)

For those of you who don't know about it, the FolkDJ list is an electronic discussion group for DJs and other people interested in all folk-based music (bluegrass, old-time, traditional balladry, traditional international music, singer-songwriters, etc.) on the radio. Folk DJs post their playlists so you can see who is playing your music, or your kind of music, and how much!
