Subject: BS: Happy June Teenth From: Bobert Date: 19 Jun 03 - 08:34 PM Thogh the Emcipation Proclaimation was signed in January, 1863, it was not until this day in 1865 did slaves in Texas learn of their freedom. I'm not going to get into why it took Texas so long to free it's inslaved people but, this being June Teenth, would remind all of us that a great deal of America's wealth was created on the backs of people who were forcefully taken away from their homes and forced to work for absolutely nothing. The US Capital building and the White House, just for examples, were build by slaves. I think it is fitting for all of us to take a moment not only to relect on the horrors of slavery but to also to reflect on just how much of what the US iswas built by slaves. And its way past time for America to deal with its past. Bobert |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy June Teenth From: mack/misophist Date: 19 Jun 03 - 11:54 PM Texas took so long to free it's slaves because slavery was illegal under Mexican rule. So, basically, they cheated and called it something else. I suspect they thought no one would notice. Also, communication was slow. The last battle of the War Between the States (Tres Palmas) was in Texas. About a year after Appomattox, I think. There's a Juneteenth fair every year, about 6 blocks from my house. Are they found elsewhere? |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy June Teenth From: GUEST Date: 20 Jun 03 - 12:21 AM Slavery wasn't illegal in Mexico back then. THEY HAD A DICTATOR! THEY WERE ALL SLAVES UNDER SANTA ANA! Geez. Texas threw off those shackles with the sacrifice of as many 'Mexican' lives as 'Anglo' lives. I live in Tx and celebrated Juneteenth today. It's a great holiday and should be THE national black holiday in the US. This is a GREAT day of celebration in TX, and no other state seems to have a day similar to it. |

I think it's time for America to deal with its present! For journalists, et al, to look about them and note how many people of different races get along just fine, especially the women. I see this on the job everyday. It's time to acknowledge that much of what the media publicize as rascism is nothing but the competitiveness (sometimes deadly) of young males, many of them full of drink or drugs. When the youths can't tell each other apart by their skin color, they don gang T-shirts and gun down boys in the wrong color shirt. THAT's the kind of thing we need to deal with. Get modern! |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy June Teenth From: Bobert Date: 21 Jun 03 - 08:09 AM Yo, GUEST, leeneia: Spoken like a true white male! Hear! Hear! But seriously, give some thought to how wealth is created. Then give some thought to the who is presently enjoying that wealth. And why? Sure, this is going to have to make you think out of the "Why-should-I-be-accountable-for-something-my-granddaddy-did?" box. And think collectively, if you will. Or don't. That, of course is your right. Bobert |
