And he is a challenge, no mistake. The neo-conservative movement represented by such thinkers as Ann Coulter, for goo'ness' sake, has waged a campaign which turns "liberal" into a dirty word. The sort of militant authoritarianism represented by this far-right "conspiracy", to use Hillary Clinton's word for it, is not accessible through dialogue of thoughts, in the normal sense, but responds instead to a dialogue of power and control. Thus ethics, the contemplation of right action, gets forced aside in favor of the analysis of options in a realpolitik game in which morality is defined only by success.

Invoking Cosmic Alignments, or the blessing of mystical forces, may not be enough to counteract this interesting tide. It is likely that something more persuasive and concrete is called for.

This is an old whine of the rigid religious right-- I've been hearing it for years. As far as I am concerned, though, it's all the same old same old-- people are people, and one characteristic is that we all long for ritual and spiritual expression. You all know the original post is on target, but you're just too cowardly to admit it. Like it or not, America was built on Christian values. And in order for the internationalist Organized Crime cartel to destroy the work of Jefferson and Washington and Tom Paine, the foundation of America first has to be weakened. The religious underpinnings have to be attacked. So just substitute bullshit Matrix and Potter 'theology' as part of this process. Actually, America was not built on Christian values. Physically it was mostly built on the principle of force majeure. As for the principles of not harming, I hardly think they were Biblical originally. As I recall there was an awful lot of destruction being wrought by those above and those below in the Bibles I have read. The origins of the doctrine are probably in the Vedas and the Buddhist lexicon.

But it (the US) has been organized on important principles of law and the distribution and balance of power, intended to prevent the concentration of undue power. That's where we're being sold down de ribber, sistuh.

The thing is, DisGuest, you can make the universe as ugly as you want simply by inventing crosseyed categories to view it from. One way to do this is to decide that forces of good and forces of evil -- in the ordinary human sense -- are actually the cosmic categories of existence itself, or that the planes of reality are people by humanoid tribes with horrendous powers and weird senses of humor. Christians, Norse, Hindi, Egyptian, Greek and paganRoman religions are riddled witht hese bizarre personae. If you then, having placed these entities into positions of power over your universe, run out and glimpse the world as it is people by these malformed characters, it is going to look pretty distorted. There are lots of better ways to divide up the cosmos, but if you want to design your own package instead of buying one of these commercial off-the-shelf character sets, why you have to exercise your powers of insight and imagination and responsibility. Since this is far too much to ask of many people, we end up with a lot of very confused people wondering why the universe seems like such a tricky place, riddled with doom and moral condemnation. It is not. But you get to paint it any color you like.

I'm still confused about the Discworld novels being in on this conspiracy. Terry Pratchett? Promoting the occult? As far as I can see this is just the sort of thing he sends up something rotten. Both sides. Anyone who is involved in such a conspiracy, and the religious types who set it up as target.

Isn't it odd how the major issues raised by the noisy churches include things like Harry Potter (but not all the hype and ridiculousness about the launch - even the Guardian has been selling sets of four for families, 2 adult and 2 child copies - what house needs multiple copies of one book?) and loving relationships between adults which do not hurt anyone, and are seen by others as forces for good? These issues are very minor ones in the holy books of most religions. They really have to be hunted down in the Bible. Whereas caring for the needy, the stranger, and the oppressed, the sacrifice of a humble and contrite heart, going out to meet the damaged and not judging them, but partying at their tables, seem to get less emphasis.

I'm just watching the news of a Potter party in London - are these books really worth it? I've read them, I've seen the films, but I'm going to bed to read Lindsay Davis' latest. (Where she mentions Christians, I have to admit she's not wildly flattering.)

Well, sure there's a transformation into a New Age or a New World Order underway. Obviously. The key question is, will it be managed by progressive or regressive forces? That is, forces who believe in sharing power and resources or forces who believe in hoarding them for a select few? The former impulse is democratic, the latter is authoritarian.

In a progressive New Age you might see a much greater variety of spiritual approaches, and a withering away of traditional priestly authority structures as people stop using intermediaries and deal directly with whatever their understanding of "God" is.

You might see an economy that is based on satisfying actual needs or people rather than artificially manufactured appetites. In such an economy you might see an end to poverty as well as an end to ecological destruction.

You might also see far greater tolerance and acceptance of different approaches to religion (and culture), with people recognizing that anyone on a sincere spiritual deserves respect.

I do not in the least feel threatened by Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or anything else like that. I do feel nervous about people who think their way is the only way, which is generally the case with religious fundamentalists of all denominations. Such people are dangerous.

Christian values are fine. So are Buddhist values, Muslim values, Hindu values, Bahai values, Taoist values, and so on...and if you look even a little beneath the surface you will discover that they are essentially the same values.

Bring on the New Age, I say, but to hell with the autocrats, warmakers, and money junkies.

You know, Rapaire, you can be anything you want, but some things require a young and flexible body, so you may have to wait for a future Earthly incarnation in order to satisfy some of these dreams of yours. That can easily be arranged after this physical life is over. You can also arrange to completely skip the social convulsions that GUEST is alluding to, by simply delaying your next incarnation until things have settled down again...but most souls can't resist jumping right into the thick of the action. It makes for a better drama.

GUEST, you don't scare me a bit. By the way, I agree with some of the stuff you're saying. It's all very interesting. None of it is a threat to my nonmaterial self (my soul). If you look back through the last few centuries you will find that various celebrities have been "used to popularise occult systems like the Jewish Kabalah" (and others) over and over again...it was happening long, long before Madonna. It's one of the cool things about being a celebrity. Don't sweat it.
